Design Thinking - Prototype and Test
This document describes two prototypes for helping a student manage their time between studies and part-time work. The first prototype involves using calendars, to-do lists, and scheduling apps to organize and prioritize tasks. Testing showed this approach made the student's life simpler and helped them meet deadlines. The second prototype uses a time management grid to categorize tasks as important/urgent vs. not. Testing also showed this approach helped the student better understand how they spend their time. Feedback from the student will be used to improve automatic task integration and customization of the approaches.

Nathan Kane discusses his process for UI design and how to get input from various experts. He advocates for a mixture of instinct and input in the design process. Input comes from consulting experts like product managers, engineers, other designers, data analysts, senior leaders, customers, and real usage data. Instinct comes from the designer's experience, education, and gut feelings. The best time to get input varies - more input is needed early to define problems, while later refinement relies more on instinct. In this presentation we’ll discuss the importance of critique and a language for discussing design. It can be easy to complain about the way things are and theorize on the way things should be. Progress comes from understanding why something is the way it is and then examining how it meets or does not meet it’s desired goals. This is critique. Critique is not about describing how bad something is, or proposing the ultimate solution. Critique is a dialogue, a conversation that takes place to better understand how we got to where we are, how close we are to getting where we want to go and what we have left to do to get there.

best practices for incorporating critiques into a design practice
identifying common challenges to critique and ways to improve our ability to deliver, collect and receive critique
Design thinking
Design thinking relies on three modes of thinking: Open, Explore, and Close. Open involves divergent thinking to generate creative options. Explore focuses on organizing ideas and finding patterns. Close involves convergent thinking to analyze ideas and select the best option. These modes are building blocks that can be applied at both the macro and micro levels of design thinking processes and activities. It is important to use the modes sequentially rather than simultaneously for effective thinking.
Prototype by Jany

Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
