HOUSING
In this project, I was supposed to design a housing complex for three type of
categories. We were given three types of families as our clients having 10, 6 and
2 members.Total 36 units were to be designed.Designing one common housing
campus for different families having various requirements was major challenge
of this project.
I tried to work on the concept of a city within a city.As we observe, the same
city fulfill the requirements of different people living in it.It has a simple plan
with open space for multipurpose use with periphery planning around it. And
rest activities being incorporated in the pocket spaces of periphery. Each home
here has a visual connection with the open spaces of site. Each of the unit in all
buildings have their own personal terrace giving a feeling of penthouse. How to
respond to each family’s requirements with same context and same amenities
was the major learning of this particular project.

In 5th semester,we were supposed to design an institutional project in our design studio.I was
given a programme of performing art institute to be designed in our city,Surat. The institute’s
programme demanded dance, drama and music in one campus.
My basic aim while designing this campus was to develop the spaces ,such that each art form
have their own separate space to evolve.I tried to segregate all the three art forms accord-
ing to their functional requirement and provided more of outdoor spaces for their practice,
because these art forms doesn’t neccesarily require closed rooms.Articulation and detailing of
each art form was major challenge.
RESCUE CENTER
Banaras, a city located on the banks of river ganges is the
place where hindus believe, if a person dies, salvation is
attained. It is known as the “holy city of india”, and every
year millions of people visit it.Due to its placement on the
bank of the river, the city is very prone to floods, and due to
the rush, stampedes are very frequent.
Here I have designed a rescue center for the city that can
help in such situations. The main concern of the center was,
very easy circulation and a place for the training for rescu-
ers and firemen that would double up as a spot for tents
during the situation of distress.
Accordingly, I designed the project such that the building
covering the whole site seems as connected and form vari-
ous multipurpose spaces on ground. The large open space
at the entrance act as a multipurpose ground for gatherings
and the open space at the backside is for training. These
two open spaces are connected by a semi-covered space in
form of horizontal partition block. And this horizontal stirp
block is in turn also connected to the major recreational
space ‘canteen’ thus combining all the activities visually.

In present times, computer is the answer to all our questions. And the information technology is what makes it possible. It is one of
the fastest growing industries in the world and especially in india.
There are many centers in the world where this is happening at a very fast pace, one of them being Gandhinagar in Gujarat. With the
need of IT in all the sectors of industry there is a need for it’s growth and development across India. With the increasing number of IT
companies coming in Gujarat, it have come to the attention of developers all over india and has become a hot spot.
With the increase in demand there is also an increase in the education sector for the spread of knowledge in the respective field. Till
now there had been no institute teaching information technology only, but with its demand the need for such an institute has also
greatly increased. A complex catering to both the needs would serve best both for the working and education. In a few years time it
is what people are going to want.
I combined all the programmes in my campus as in to develop an IT city. All the requirements of an it feild are kept in mind. The
programmes I incorporated are IT ofiices,IT institute with its hostel and an IT expo for the exposure of the feild.
Combining all these programmes with different requirements was a challenge here.
IT CAMPUS - THESIS
The site area of my campus was 60 acres in which i developed
the educational, professional and recreational activities. The
campus was designed such that all the activities had their private
spaces but they all were somewhere connected.
As we enter into the site area one can see the IT offices block
catering their personal plaza which is also connected to the
recreational area in the institute block.
The institute for the students is separated from the formal offices
through a recreational block which on the other hand also acts
as a connecting element between both of them. It serves a place
where the IT professionals and students can share their interests
and knowledge.
Hostels for the students is also incorporated while moving fur-
ther in the site which has very good landscape for the students.
IT expo is the place where people who are not formally the part
of this campus are welcomed.
IT city:
Site location: gandhinagar,gujarat.
Site area : 60 acres.
Built up area : 20 % af total site area.
Programme:
IT offices : 3 buildings , 3400 sq.Mt area/floor.
Total 8 floors in each building thus totally 24
floors of all three 3 buildings. Thus it catered
81,600 sq.Mts of area for offices.
IT institute: It included the recreational block.
Both of these blocks were connected through a
semi covered passage.
IT expo : IT expo included the shops for selling
of the products and the exhibition space for the
display of various products and knowledge of
the feild. It also caters a seminar hall for outer
people.

DECCAN VISTA
Deccan vista is a residential building situated in very developing area of the city
Bengaluru called Yashwantpuram.
It is a building catering to 4 floors with two flats on each floor. And one additional
flat on ground floor. Thus it had totally 9 flats in the building. All the flats were
2bhk with the area 1100-1200 sq.Ft. Responding to the site , the front facade was
made curved. All the flats were designed such that they get visual connection
with the front road activities through front balcony which was large enough.
Even though being compact the flat inside were spacious and full of light and
fresh air.

Detailing and articulation of the building was very impressive. Opposite to the
fornt elevation of the building was the slum area,so the front elevation was de-
signed such that all the terraces had sliding louvered panels for the privacy of the
residents from the nuisance of slums. The terraces were designed such that each
of them had green patches as in a garden terrace.
Moduling was thought of with brick jali modules on each floor. It is a prominent
feature in this building, making it a contemporary block with a traditional touch.
Responding to the climatic conditions,it helps keeping the interior cool.

LA-GARDENIA
La gardenia is a project located in the Yelgiri region few
kms away from banglore,India. It is a weekend home project
comprising of 32 units with 3 categories having a ,b and c
types of units.
I was given responsibility of the club house, which is the
major block of the whole campus. The club house is located
right at the entrance of the site and is the major impact
creating factor.
It has simple square plan form with pitched roofs in re-
spond to the climate of that particular region.
The site has minor contours thus evolving half basement
onto groundfloor gradually. It is supported with beautiful
water body in front. It is basically a lap pool with an infinity
pool.At the upper floors provision of 6 rooms is given for
the guests with personal terraces as it gives an amazing
view of the valley down as this particular site is located
on the hilltop which is the most prominent feature of this
clubhouse, one feels very close to the nature here.
Thus, this clubhouse caters all the requirements demanded
by the client as a recreational hub for whole campus.

“ STUDY TOUR IN EVERY EVEN SEMESTER.”
“INDIA RICH IN HERITAGE AND DIVERSE IN CULTURE.”
“EXPLORATION OF ALL THE CULTURES IN INDIA.”
“PALCES,TEMPLES,FORTS,PUBLIC SPACES,DIFFERENT IN EACH DIFFERENT STATE OF INDIA.”
IN EVERY EVEN SEMESTER WE ARE SUPPOSSED TO VISIT ANY OF THE HISTORICAL CITY OF
INDIA TO STUDY THE PAST TRADITIONS OF OUR COUNTRY.
TO STUDY THE PEOPLE OF THAT REGION,THEIR LIFESTYLE AND HOW THEY ARE AFFECTED
BY THE STRONG HISTORY OF THAT PARTICULAR CITY.
WE STUDY THE EVOLUTION PATTERN OF THAT CITY SINCE AGES. AND THE PATTERN IN
WHICH PEOPLE RESIDE THEIR. EVERY CITY HAS DIFFERENT EVOLUTION PATTERN AND
DIFFERENT STREET PATTERNS AND ACTIVITIES HAPPENING.
IN 5 YEARS OF COURSE OF BACHELORS OF ARCHITECTURE ,WE VISITED 3 SUCH PLACES.
I VISITED THREE HISTORICAL CITIES :
PUSHKAR
VARANASI
UJJAIN.
ALL THESE THREE CITIES HAVE GREAT HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE AND ARE VERY RICH
IN TRADITIONS AND CULTURE ,AND DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER IN TERMS OF LIFE-
STYLE,HERITAGE AND STRUCTURE.
I HAVE TRIED TO EXPLAIN TWO OF MY STUDY TOURS IN THIS PORTFOLIO. VARANASI AND
UJJAIN,ABOUT WHAT THE CITY IS AND WHAT WE LEARNED FROM THEM.
VARANASI
1.RAJENDRAPRASAD GHAT:
In 1979 in memory and honour of the first president of india (1950-1962), Rajendra
prasad (1884-1963) this ghat was renamed, and made pucca by the Municipal
Corporation of varanasi.
This ghat was northern extension of dasasvamedha ghat. And until late nineteenth
century a stone statue of horse was at the ghat witnessing the "Ten-Horses sacrific-
es" performed by Bhara Shiva Nagas in second century, that is how the old name
"Ghoda ghat" ("Horse ghat").
2.MANMANDIR GHAT:
The old name of this ghat was Somesvara, but in 1585 when Raja
Savai Mana Singh (of amber) made his palace and ghat this is named
after him.
This ghat is "known primarily for the magnificent building with exqui-
site, ornately carved window carvings" .
On the top of the floor is a Hindu Observatory built by Savi -ji
singh-11
The closeby shrines at the top of the ghat are Somesvara, Dalabhes-
vara, Remesvara and Sthuladanta vinayaka.
3.TRIPURA BHAIRVI
GHAT:
This ghat is named after
the Tripura Bhairavi
Shrine, a female partner
of Tripuresvara whose
image also exists there.
Another important
shrine is of Varahi, one
of the nine mother-god-
desses.
4.MEER GHAT:
This ghat rep-
resents two old
sites of Jarasand-
hesvara and
Vrdhaditya, which
were converted by
Mira Rustam Ali in
1735.
5.DASHASHVAMEDHA GHAT:
In 1979 in memory and honour of
the first president of india (1950-
1962), Rajendra prasad (1884-1963)
this ghat was renamed, and made

The major activity in the
evening is the ganga arti.
The concentration of the
people is maximum to see
ganga arti.
Its the time of celebrating
the Ganga.
The major activity on the
ghat in the morning is
performing rituals by the
deities, saint and visitors
coming to see the ghat,
According to the myth related to divodasa, lord brahma (" the creator" in the hind
trinity gods) performed the ten-horses sacrifice (dasa-asvamedha) at this site.
The temple of sulatankesvara, brahmesvara, varahesvara, abhaya vinayaka, the
ganga ("goddess"),and bandi devi are there at the top of the ghat. These shrines are
linked to several important pilgrimage journeys. The southern part of the
ghat was made pucca in 1740 by bajirao pesava.

Ujjain also known as ujain, ujjayini, avanti, avantika, avantikapuri is
an ancient city situated on the eastern bank of the kshipra river in
the malwa region of central india. The city is today part of the state of
madhya pradesh, and it is the administrative centre of ujjain district
and ujjain division.
Ujjain is one of the four sites that host the kumbh mela (also called the
simhastha mela), a quadrennial mass pilgrimage that attracts millions
of hindu pilgrims from around the country. It is also known as the city
of temples.
TRAFFIC FLOW the spine is majorly flooded with two wheelers, pe-
destrians and rishaws during the peak hours of the day that is moring
and evening. As the day advances from moring to afternoon the traffic
movement increases the street vendors and hawkers encroach the
footpaths and parking space available due to which the spine remains
chaotic throughout the day.
During the evening the street is even more chaotic as it leads to the
connecting bazaars and street food joints which are highly active by
the evening.
The whole spine has a two way traffic flow with very less parking
space.
STREET FACADE the street mainly seems to be approached by a
number of shops in a row with residents above the street the feel of
commercial as well as people clouding up on their ottas in the eve-
ning. Ottas owe a very important role in wholly residential buildings
as well as residential plus commercial buildings having people seated
their most of the time making the street highly active all day long.
Balconies seems to be given an up leading importance having its role
for clear visual and physical interaction. The facades generally have
either balconies or corridors leading to various individual unit in a
wide dwelling.
STREET EDGE the street opens at one end to the historical and
important tourist spot “the gopal temple”,which forms a square with
a huge range of different activities happening. On the other side the
street meets up the main road of the city.

STREET ACTIVITIES the commercial activities happens at
the otta or the front part of the unit where the old dwelling
has a overlapping space at the otta serving for commercial
as well as social intersecting point. The present scenario of
the structure is such that the whole front part serves as the
commercial zone and the back part serves as the residential
one. For newer buildings the lower part of the building block
serves as a commercial zone and the upper part serves as
either residence or commercial zone. The front part serves as
parking where hawkers accommodate blocking the access to
the unit. The main bazaar street is densely populated because
of the commercial activities happening there. The local re-
siders use to give the front part of their house on rent to the
local vendors for selling their goods.
STREET PATTERN structures on both side of the road are very
monotonous in terms of heights i.e from g to g+3 structures,cre-
ating a monotonous feeling on the street of the shade pat-
terns, shops and activities. Some of the structures on the street
have a set back from the road creating parking spaces. Bazaar
streets are focal point of the city that affects the character of the
locality converting the space very dynamic. It is the commodity
based market, the bazar stretches almost 175 mts and contains
mixed used buildings i.e. Below commercial and above residential.

  • 5. HOUSING In this project, I was supposed to design a housing complex for three type of categories. We were given three types of families as our clients having 10, 6 and 2 members.Total 36 units were to be designed.Designing one common housing campus for different families having various requirements was major challenge of this project. I tried to work on the concept of a city within a city.As we observe, the same city fulfill the requirements of different people living in it.It has a simple plan with open space for multipurpose use with periphery planning around it. And rest activities being incorporated in the pocket spaces of periphery. Each home here has a visual connection with the open spaces of site. Each of the unit in all buildings have their own personal terrace giving a feeling of penthouse. How to respond to each family’s requirements with same context and same amenities was the major learning of this particular project. My basic aim while designing this campus was to develop the spaces ,such that each art form have their own separate space to evolve.I tried to segregate all the three art forms accord- ing to their functional requirement and provided more of outdoor spaces for their practice, because these art forms doesn’t neccesarily require closed rooms.Articulation and detailing of each art form was major challenge.
  • 7. RESCUE CENTER Banaras, a city located on the banks of river ganges is the place where hindus believe, if a person dies, salvation is attained. It is known as the “holy city of india”, and every year millions of people visit it.Due to its placement on the bank of the river, the city is very prone to floods, and due to the rush, stampedes are very frequent. Here I have designed a rescue center for the city that can help in such situations. The main concern of the center was, very easy circulation and a place for the training for rescu- ers and firemen that would double up as a spot for tents during the situation of distress. Accordingly, I designed the project such that the building covering the whole site seems as connected and form vari- ous multipurpose spaces on ground. The large open space at the entrance act as a multipurpose ground for gatherings and the open space at the backside is for training. These two open spaces are connected by a semi-covered space in form of horizontal partition block. And this horizontal stirp block is in turn also connected to the major recreational space ‘canteen’ thus combining all the activities visually. • 8. IT CAMPUS - THESIS SITE PLAN OF IT CAMPUS SECTION SITE STUDY 3D VIEWS SITE SURROUNDING ROAD ANALYSIS POSSIBLE ENTRY AND EXIT NOICE LEVEL OF SITE In present times, computer is the answer to all our questions. And the information technology is what makes it possible. It is one of the fastest growing industries in the world and especially in india. There are many centers in the world where this is happening at a very fast pace, one of them being Gandhinagar in Gujarat. With the need of IT in all the sectors of industry there is a need for it’s growth and development across India. With the increasing number of IT companies coming in Gujarat, it have come to the attention of developers all over india and has become a hot spot. With the increase in demand there is also an increase in the education sector for the spread of knowledge in the respective field. Till now there had been no institute teaching information technology only, but with its demand the need for such an institute has also greatly increased. A complex catering to both the needs would serve best both for the working and education. In a few years time it is what people are going to want. I combined all the programmes in my campus as in to develop an IT city. All the requirements of an it feild are kept in mind. The programmes I incorporated are IT ofiices,IT institute with its hostel and an IT expo for the exposure of the feild. Combining all these programmes with different requirements was a challenge here.
  • 9. IT CAMPUS - THESIS The site area of my campus was 60 acres in which i developed the educational, professional and recreational activities. The campus was designed such that all the activities had their private spaces but they all were somewhere connected. As we enter into the site area one can see the IT offices block catering their personal plaza which is also connected to the recreational area in the institute block. The institute for the students is separated from the formal offices through a recreational block which on the other hand also acts as a connecting element between both of them. It serves a place where the IT professionals and students can share their interests and knowledge. Hostels for the students is also incorporated while moving fur- ther in the site which has very good landscape for the students. IT expo is the place where people who are not formally the part of this campus are welcomed. IT city: Site location: gandhinagar, gujarat. Site area : 60 acres. Built up area : 20 % af total site area. Programme: IT offices : 3 buildings , 3400 sq.Mt area/floor. Total 8 floors in each building thus totally 24 floors of all three 3 buildings. Thus it catered 81,600 sq.Mts of area for offices. IT institute: It included the recreational block. Both of these blocks were connected through a semi covered passage. IT expo : IT expo included the shops for selling of the products and the exhibition space for the display of various products and knowledge of the feild. It also caters a seminar hall for outer people. Opposite to the fornt elevation of the building was the slum area,so the front elevation was de- signed such that all the terraces had sliding louvered panels for the privacy of the residents from the nuisance of slums. The terraces were designed such that each of them had green patches as in a garden terrace. Moduling was thought of with brick jali modules on each floor. LA-GARDENIA La gardenia is a project located in the Yelgiri region few kms away from banglore,India. It is a weekend home project comprising of 32 units with 3 categories having a ,b and c types of units. I was given responsibility of the club house, which is the major block of the whole campus. The club house is located right at the entrance of the site and is the major impact creating factor. It has simple square plan form with pitched roofs in re- spond to the climate of that particular region. The site has minor contours thus evolving half basement onto groundfloor gradually. It is supported with beautiful water body in front. It is basically a lap pool with an infinity pool.At the upper floors provision of 6 rooms is given for the guests with personal terraces as it gives an amazing view of the valley down as this particular site is located on the hilltop which is the most prominent feature of this clubhouse, one feels very close to the nature here. Thus, this clubhouse caters all the requirements demanded by the client as a recreational hub for whole campus. UJJAIN Religious Building Commercial / Residential Built up Traffic movementRoad Road ELEVATION A A A’ B B’ C C’ Ujjain also known as ujain, ujjayini, avanti, avantika, avantikapuri is an ancient city situated on the eastern bank of the kshipra river in the malwa region of central india. The city is today part of the state of madhya pradesh, and it is the administrative centre of ujjain district and ujjain division. Ujjain is one of the four sites that host the kumbh mela (also called the simhastha mela), a quadrennial mass pilgrimage that attracts millions of hindu pilgrims from around the country. It is also known as the city of temples. TRAFFIC FLOW the spine is majorly flooded with two wheelers, pe- destrians and rishaws during the peak hours of the day that is moring and evening. As the day advances from moring to afternoon the traffic movement increases the street vendors and hawkers encroach the footpaths and parking space available due to which the spine remains chaotic throughout the day. During the evening the street is even more chaotic as it leads to the connecting bazaars and street food joints which are highly active by the evening. The whole spine has a two way traffic flow with very less parking space. STREET FACADE the street mainly seems to be approached by a number of shops in a row with residents above the street the feel of commercial as well as people clouding up on their ottas in the eve- ning. Ottas owe a very important role in wholly residential buildings as well as residential plus commercial buildings having people seated their most of the time making the street highly active all day long. Balconies seems to be given an up leading importance having its role for clear visual and physical interaction. The facades generally have either balconies or corridors leading to various individual unit in a wide dwelling. STREET EDGE the street opens at one end to the historical and important tourist spot “the gopal temple”,which forms a square with a huge range of different activities happening. On the other side the street meets up the main road of the city. ELEVATION A BUILDING USE AND TYPOLOGY PLAN OPEN VS BUILT UP PLAN TRAFFIC MOVEMENT PATTERN PLAN BASE PLANINTRODUCTION PHOTOGRAPHS

The present scenario of the structure is such that the whole front part serves as the commercial zone and the back part serves as the residential one. For newer buildings the lower part of the building block serves as a commercial zone and the upper part serves as either residence or commercial zone. The front part serves as parking where hawkers accommodate blocking the access to the unit. The main bazaar street is densely populated because of the commercial activities happening there. The local re- siders use to give the front part of their house on rent to the local vendors for selling their goods. STREET PATTERN structures on both side of the road are very monotonous in terms of heights i.e from g to g+3 structures,cre- ating a monotonous feeling on the street of the shade pat- terns, shops and activities. Some of the structures on the street have a set back from the road creating parking spaces. Bazaar streets are focal point of the city that affects the character of the locality converting the space very dynamic.
