The document presents a design proposal for a floating ferry terminal located along the Yellow River in Shanxi Province, China. The region was historically prosperous due to river transportation but declined as new transportation modes replaced the river network. The proposal aims to revitalize the area by creating a mobile and reconfigurable "Anchor & Ferry" style architecture that can heal wounds to the local environment and economy while respecting the town's character. The floating design is meant to anchor temporarily without disrupting the town, then disassemble and move to the next location once its mission is completed.

In this design proposal, it is critical to connect all the functions. China a developing country has a population of 1.3 billion, including 23-million college students ShanXi a province located in central region, rich in ancient architectures and history, supported by heavy ind- -ustrial economy TaiYuan capital of ShanXi province, with a history of 2500 years, has a population of 4 millions College Town College Town is located in suburban area of Taiyuan city, 32.8 km from metropolitan area, and adjacent to a satelite city Yuci. Original land use of this area was farmland, and the college town construct- ion started shortly after 6-month planning without fully resolving the issues. Site Surrounding Conditions The site and its immediate surroundings are not equipped with basic infrastrctures and far away from city grid. Large area of derserted la- -nd can be seen when approaching to the campus. Limited social inte- raction is provided for the students and isolated environment interfere with students’learning development. Based on the site analysis and existing campus facilities, as a designer I would like to increase percentage of flexible function area such as leisure and exhibition, in addition to improve basic campus functions. “Ideal”college life China“reality”real pictures of college life Based on our preliminery research on students life among 445 students of more than 10 different majors from 18 different universities, we found that students’hobbyies, leisure life and career preferences remain their “comfort zone”. Most of the students are afraid ofbeing explorers and facing new challenges. In China, there are approximately 8 millions students enter college every year, and 90% will graduate. However, a significant amount of students cannot be employed. 12-year primary education prior to college does not neccessary prepare the students pursue higher goals in their life. They are trained in a way that they become lack of free thinking and creativity.What do we do in college？ What prevent us persue our dreams？ Be yourself! These are what we expect in College？ Chaotic and dingy dorm, boring classes, mundane after school campus life, pressures from employment after graduation. These reflect real desperate college life in current situation. What can we do as designers to motivate students to be true to themselves and enhance communication among different groups? How can we provide students with ‘free and flexible space’to accommodate their free thinking and respect characteristics of each student? As a result, building is divided into three big boxes, and lacking connection among them. 1. Theater is elevated to free the space below, and pushed towards north to replace library zone. 2. Auditorium is elevated and connected with outdoor plaza by great stairs. This configuration will accommo- date circulation need for a large number of crowds. 3. Boxes are broken down to allow better natural lighting Conference zone consists with a large room of 200 sqm, a small room of 100 sqm, and other service. There is no height limit, but entry should be easily accessed. Four auditoriums (180 sqm each) require high ceilings and easily access. Theater should have a capacity of 1500. A basic play stage is required, and sophisti- cated stage equipment is not neccessary. Entries and exits should accommodate large volume flow of visitors. Total library program area is about 7000 sqm. Spatial configu- ration can be flexible. No height limit. Location is essential. Hierarchy of height in the building complex is created in consistent with major axis. As a result, theater replaces part of the auditorium zone. Courtyard is inserted to function as a light well for the auditorium as well as emergency evacuation zone. Form is further refined to reduce the massive impres- sion of the building. Skylight and corridors are created. Terrace garden provides visitors with independent circulation for different programs. Sports field audience stand area is connected with Student Life Center, third floor serves as a canopy for audience. This area also becomes a transitional area between sports field and library. View is cons- trained in honrizontal direction. Bridges across the courtyard area blur the boundaries of different programs; it encourage eye contacts among people from all levels. It is adjacent to a historical town Qikou. This region was prosperous as part of the old river transportation network. In modern time, new transportation modes gradually substitute the river, therefore old ferry port has been abandoned, and town Qikou is falling as a consequence. The ultimate goal of designing a ferry terminal is to vitalize local economy and preserve local culture. We chose ‘anchor’ as a design motif in this competition project. Metaphorically, this ferry terminal acts like a carrier that is able to float and drift, but anchored with the local surrounding. 1、Center Project site is located at the junction of old town and new district of Runc- heng. During the realization process, original strong connections among villages are torn, and damage from modernisation is irreversible. 2、Runcheng Village In history, Runchen was a properous Village with many wealthy merchants. During late Ming Dynasty,three citadels were built to p- revent invasion. In 2010, Runcheng was no- minated as a Historical Town of China. 3、Diji Town Of 1000-year history, transformed from an original defense town to an important trading node. Original iant walls and narrow streets still exist nowaday. As others in northern reg- ion of China, local residents have typical tough character and unique life style. 4、Qingshui Qing River nurtures many generations of villages on both banks. Tranquil and beautiful nature is rare in the region. The transportation function of Qing river gradually dimished since trading declined. 5、Runcheng Park The project site is located in Runcheng Park, which is a main tourist attraction. It will be an ideal location for connecting visitors with locals, and inviting recreational activities into natural environment. 3、Visual Corridor According to Chinese Fengshui conpet, Runcheng Park is an ideal site, because it is ba- cking of moutains and facing water. It is set on the connection line between Huilong and W- enchang pavilions, and becomes part of a visual corridor implying invisible contact between religion and mundane. China： With an increasing tendency, current urban poplutation is 51.27%, 1.32% increase since last year. Shanxi Province： Of 3000-year history, located near Yellow River, becomes an important and strategic region for development in central China. Yangcheng Town： Located in moutain area in southeastern Shanxi, and to the west of Qing River. It was founded more than 2000 years ago, and it is famous for its rich natural resources and talented people. Based on preliminary analysis, redland tour route and blue water route are created for visitors and local residents. Different groups people, different life styles are designed to interact here in the system. Life itself is a dynamic exhibition. Exhibition Center is imbedded along eastern route and turns into another attraction destination. It serves as a place for communitcation and exhibition. Runcheng Village

Regardless of building types, courtyard is essential space for living and socail. In additionto simple orthogonal form of courtyard, natural and mand made elements such as plants, fish pond, pavilion, loggia are imbedded in the design. Hard paving on the square for occational dancing event and parking Exterior exhibition area can tranform into an outdoor play stage; steps around sunken garden provides adequate seatings for people. It becomes a gathering center for the village. 2、Arch door at the bottom of view tower provide the visitor with a view deep through the space below skywalk. 3、Arch door, skywalk, loggia, exhibition hall and sunken garden, all these elements create a tranquil and friendly environment. 1、Skywalk is an essential element connetcing all the major programs. Visitors can enjoy continuous views while walking along the skywalk. 4、Planning exhibition hall is located under a large canopy roof. The roof is constructed in traditional method with timbers and parti- ally cladded with glass. Space anaylsis 5、Part of the loggia is immediately facing a pond, it provides another picturesque view of old town cross the pond.
1、Because Runcheng Town was founded near Qing River, local residents are emot- ionally attached to water. This is what we expect in Runcheng Urban Exhibition Center. We hope this design will become a reflection of what a good architecture can do in the process of urban renewal for historical town.

Today more than 81,000 people live in greater Downtown Miami - double the population since 2000.The majority of residents are young professionals who enjoy the convenience of an active urban lifestyle, extensive public transporta- tion options and exciting cultural and entertainment offerings. Downtown consists primarily of office buildings and residential buildings. The lack of comprehensive- ness of high rises here causes low efficiency use. For example, office buildings will be abandoned after people finish their works. Recent years, condos boom in downtown, and the prices for existing condos rising and rental rates reaching record-setting highs. But the increas- es of different functions are not balance, which is not convenient enough for the people living there. In this design proposal, it is critical to connect all the functions. China a developing country has a population of 1.3 billion, including 23-million college students ShanXi a province located in central region, rich in ancient architectures and history, supported by heavy ind- -ustrial economy TaiYuan capital of ShanXi province, with a history of 2500 years, has a population of 4 millions College Town College Town is located in suburban area of Taiyuan city, 32.8 km from metropolitan area, and adjacent to a satelite city Yuci. Original land use of this area was farmland, and the college town construct- ion started shortly after 6-month planning without fully resolving the issues. Site Surrounding Conditions The site and its immediate surroundings are not equipped with basic infrastrctures and far away from city grid. Large area of derserted la- -nd can be seen when approaching to the campus. Limited social inte- raction is provided for the students and isolated environment interfere with students’learning development. Based on the site analysis and existing campus facilities, as a designer I would like to increase percentage of flexible function area such as leisure and exhibition, in addition to improve basic campus functions.     “Ideal”college life China“reality”real picturesof college life Based on our preliminery research on students life among 445 students of more than 10 different majors from 18 different universities, we found that students’hobbyies, leisure life and career preferences remain their “comfort zone”. Most of the students are afraid ofbeing explorers and facing new challenges. In China, there are approximately 8 millions students enter college every year, and 90% will graduate. However, a significant amount of students cannot be employed. 12-year primary education prior to college does not neccessary prepare the students pursue higher goals in their life. They are trained in a way that they become lack of free thinking and creativity.What do we do in college？ What prevent us persue our dreams？ Be yourself! These are what we expect in College？ Chaotic and dingy dorm, boring classes, mundane after school campus life, pressures from employment after graduation. These reflect real desperate college life in current situation. What can we do as designers to motivate students to be true to themselves and enhance communication among different groups? As a result, building is divided into three big boxes, and lacking connection among them. 1. Theater is elevated to free the space below, and pushed towards north to replace library zone. 2. Auditorium is elevated and connected with outdoor plaza by great stairs. This configuration will accommo- date circulation need for a large number of crowds. 3. Boxes are broken down to allow better natural lighting Conference zone consists with a large room of 200 sqm, a small room of 100 sqm, and other service. There is no height limit, but entry should be easily accessed. Four auditoriums (180 sqm each) require high ceilings and easily access. Theater should have a capacity of 1500. A basic play stage is required, and sophisti- cated stage equipment is not neccessary. Entries and exits should accommodate large volume flow of visitors. Total library program area is about 7000 sqm. Spatial configu- ration can be flexible. No height limit. Location is essential. Hierarchy of height in the building complex is created in consistent with major axis. As a result, theater replaces part of the auditorium zone. Courtyard is inserted to function as a light well for the auditorium as well as emergency evacuation zone. Form is further refined to reduce the massive impres- sion of the building. Skylight and corridors are created. Terrace garden provides visitors with independent circulation for different programs. Sports field audience stand area is connected with Student Life Center, third floor serves as a canopy for audience. This area also becomes a transitional area between sports field and library. View is cons- trained in honrizontal direction. Bridges across the courtyard area blur the boundaries of different programs; it encourage eye contacts among people from all levels. The open stacks especially for disables has 21 book cabinets of 2200mm high located and provide passage for wheelchair The reding area especially for physically disables is designed with 4 6-seat tables, and provides passage for wheelchairs facilitating free access and convenient reading Carrel-located reding area is designed with 20 carrels that each has 1200mm in width. It is adjacent to a historical town Qikou. This region was prosperous as part of the old river transportation network. In modern time, new transportation modes gradually substitute the river, therefore old ferry port has been abandoned, and town Qikou is falling as a consequence. The ultimate goal of designing a ferry terminal is to vitalize local economy and preserve local culture. We chose ‘anchor’ as a design motif in this competition project. Metaphorically, this ferry terminal acts like a carrier that is able to float and drift, but anchored with the local surrounding.     1、Center Project site islocated at the junction of old town and new district of Runc- heng. During the realization process, original strong connections among villages are torn, and damage from modernisation is irreversible. 2、Runcheng Village In history, Runchen was a properous Village with many wealthy merchants. During late Ming Dynasty,three citadels were built to p- revent invasion. In 2010, Runcheng was no- minated as a Historical Town of China. 3、Diji Town Of 1000-year history, transformed from an original defense town to an important trading node. Original iant walls and narrow streets still exist nowaday. As others in northern reg- ion of China, local residents have typical tough character and unique life style. 4、Qingshui Qing River nurtures many generations of villages on both banks. Tranquil and beautiful nature is rare in the region. The transportation function of Qing river gradually dimished since trading declined. 5、Runcheng Park The project site is located in Runcheng Park, which is a main tourist attraction. It will be an ideal location for connecting visitors with locals, and inviting recreational activities into natural environment. 3、Visual Corridor According to Chinese Fengshui conpet, Runcheng Park is an ideal site, because it is ba- cking of moutains and facing water. It is set on the connection line between Huilong and W- enchang pavilions, and becomes part of a visual corridor implying invisible contact between religion and mundane. China： With an increasing tendency, current urban poplutation is 51.27%, 1.32% increase since last year. Shanxi Province： Of 3000-year history, located near Yellow River, becomes an important and strategic region for development in central China. Yangcheng Town： Located in moutain area in southeastern Shanxi, and to the west of Qing River. It was founded more than 2000 years ago, and it is famous for its rich natural resources and talented people. Based on preliminary analysis, redland tour route and blue water route are created for visitors and local residents. Different groups people, different life styles are designed to interact here in the system. Life itself is a dynamic exhibition. Exhibition Center is imbedded along eastern route and turns into another attraction destination. It serves as a place for communitcation and exhibition. Runcheng Village

It becomes a gathering center for the village. 2、Arch door at the bottom of view tower provide the visitor with a view deep through the space below skywalk. 3、Arch door, skywalk, loggia, exhibition hall and sunken garden, all these elements create a tranquil and friendly environment. 1、Skywalk is an essential element connetcing all the major programs. Visitors can enjoy continuous views while walking along the skywalk. 4、Planning exhibition hall is located under a large canopy roof. The roof is constructed in traditional method with timbers and parti- ally cladded with glass. Space anaylsis 5、Part of the loggia is immediately facing a pond, it provides another picturesque view of old town cross the pond.

This is what we expect in Runcheng Urban Exhibition Center. We hope this design will become a reflection of what a good architecture can do in the process of urban renewal for historical town.

For example, office buildings will be abandoned after people finish their works. Recent years, condos boom in downtown, and the prices for existing condos rising and rental rates reaching record-setting highs.
