Depression is a severe mental condition characterized by feelings of hopelessness, inadequacy, and lack of energy. It affects about 20% of the population in the US and worldwide, with women being two to three times more likely than men to experience it. Common symptoms include feelings of helplessness, loss of interest, difficulty concentrating, changes in appetite and sleep, and sometimes suicidal thoughts. Depression is different from normal sadness in that it lasts much longer and can be chronic in nature. Around 1/3 of people worldwide will experience depression at some point, which negatively impacts both physical and mental well-being.
