Italy has a population of over 60 million people as of 2008, making it the fourth largest population in the European Union and 23rd largest worldwide. Around half of Italy's population lives in Northern Italy, where population density is highest at 199.2 people per square kilometer. After World War II, Italy saw increased urbanization and a shift from mass emigration to receiving immigrants. The largest cities today are Milan, Rome, Naples, and Turin. Italians make up 94.2% of the population, with top foreign groups coming from Romania, North Africa, and Albania. Italy has a long history of emigration but now receives immigrants from Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America.
