Context: Who Are Our Informal Learners? 
5% are under 18 
62% are over 45 
81% speak English as their first language 
41% are full-time employed 
20% are retired 
19% consider themselves to have a disability 
When asked the reasons for their interest in OpenLearn 
study materials nearly 84% say ‘personal interest’ but 
learners study for a wide range of reasons

New Opportunities in Open Education 
OpenLearn Works 
The OU has a pilot project platform called OpenLearn 
Works which copied OpenLearn and provides a free 
public space for people to run their own free learning 
projects. TESS-India, HEAT, Gates Foundation and other 
projects use this as a development and hosting space. 
We have recently gained a significant investment to 
develop this into a hub for OER and Open Educational 
Practice. This includes: 
• adding more content on good open educational 
practice including case studies, 
• improvements which support communities and 
organisations to make the most of OER, 
• clearer guidance on creating and uploading OER, 
• multi-format (including eBook) publishing tools, 
• new support mechanisms like badging, 
• interoperability with other platforms and 
technologies, 
• improved user profile functions

New Opportunities in Open Education OpenLearn Works The OU has a pilot project platform called OpenLearn Works which copied OpenLearn and provides a free public space for people to run their own free learning projects. TESS-India, HEAT, Gates Foundation and other projects use this as a development and hosting space. We have recently gained a significant investment to develop this into a hub for OER and Open Educational Practice. This includes: • adding more content on good open educational practice including case studies, • improvements which support communities and organisations to make the most of OER, • clearer guidance on creating and uploading OER, • multi-format (including eBook) publishing tools, • new support mechanisms like badging, • interoperability with other platforms and technologies, • improved user profile functions

  2. The page for Secret History of our streets tells a bit about the BBC series and the associated resources such as the free newspaper, crossword answers and how you can contribute information about your street

  4. Most popular – includes a filter option for activity, audio, video, free course, course (OU accredited) and Community.
  5. This shows the video and audio filter selected. I decide to choose ‘Introducing social work practice’ which is a free course with audio
  6. This is the ‘Introducing social work practice’ free unit. It is an extract of an OU course which is free for anyone to use. It does not have tutorial support
  7. When you work through the content in this free extract the site will show you which pages or sections you’ve visited to help you track your progress. On this page there is an activity with a discussion (which can be hidden or revealed). This gives a taste of what a learner might expect from formal OU course materials.
  8. This shows the Health, Sports & Psychology with filter for free courses. ‘Foundations for self-directed support in Scotland’ is the latest introductory course to be published on OL.
  9. ‘Foundations for self-directed support in Scotland’ has just started – it encourages learners to enrol as so they can track their own progress, record reflections in a learning log, use the quizzes and download an activity record (statement of participation). Unenrolled users can read content without participating in the activities in a free course, enrolling allows users to comment etc.
  10. On the home page is the link to Free OL courses, this list shows all the Health, Sports & Psychology courses and units, the number of hours they might take and their level.
  11. You can search OpenLearn for content, there is a simple search and an advanced search
  12. This is the result of the advanced search for ‘health and social care’
  13. Last year we surveyed OpenLearn users to find out why they use OpenLearn
  14. OpenLearn Works is a moodle platform for hosting open educational online course materials and content. It has some tools for collaboration, reuse and remixing of OER. To upgrade and further develop the existing OpenLearn Works platform to fully support effective use of OER and OEP. To publish guidance, good open educational practice and OER on OpenLearn Works The upgrading and further development of the OpenLearn Works platform to make it a natural hub for all things OER by becoming a community of practice platform which also provides facilities for creation and upload of OER, the ability to find good quality OER quickly, interoperability with other platforms and technologies (including mobile optimisation), the facility to publicise and host online events and an upgraded facility for creating personal profiles which joins with MyOpenLearn profile. Development will happen in phases during the next year.
  15. OpenLearn Works has been built with contributors in mind. Take our content, rework it or adapt it for your own use and then contribute it back into the OpenLearn community by placing it in OpenLearn Works. Or publish your own open content on OLW. The site is moodle based for course materials publishing.

  17. There are instructions for creating a course unit in OpenLearn Works
  18. You can also create a project in OLW which you can either set up and use without support or we can help you make full use of OLW site functionality (this may involve a fee). OLW provides project workspace for collaboration and where your project can publish and share OERs (e.g. Tess-India, Heat programme)

  21. These are some of the rated OERs including a link to an OU unit ‘eAssessment with Moodle’
  22. This is ‘eAssessment with Moodle’ which explains the development of the Moodle Quiz – you can browse the module without enrolling, however to use the quizzes you’ll need to register and enrol.
  23. There is an advanced search feature – searching for ‘health’
  24. Re:Source is a resource-sharing platform for the college sector in Scotland, supported by the College Development Network, SQA, Education Scotland and JISC RSC Scotland. It is the Scotland version of Jorum open repository service, so you can choose to search Re:Source only or Jorum resources as well.
  25. It harvests OER from other repositories if the metadata is present
  26. These are the communities whose collections are included in Re:Source so far. OpenLearn materials don’t yet feature because we’re updating the metadata for our CC licence information so that Re:Source can harvest the data, however they will appear in Re:Source soon.
