2. What is DBS ?
• It is implantation of very thin DBS Lead which
contains four electrode contacts into the target
area in the brain, for treating Parkinson’s.
• An alternative to ablative surgeries
• Also used for the treatment of intractable
epilepsy, refractory Obsessive compulsive
disorders, depression and Progressive
supranuclear palsies.

3. Who is suitable for DBS?
• No age limit.
• Most patients can carry out their daily activities
for 5 to 10 year with the help of proper medical
management.
• A stage is reached when drugs alone cannot give
adequate relief and IN advanced disease phase.

4. Duration of surgery
• The actual operation takes approximately
three to four hours, but the entire procedure
including the CT scan take five to six hours.

5. Advantages of DBS
• The activities of daily living can improve.
• Patients who are severely dependent on
others become independent.
• Surgery is helpful for relieving tremors,
stiffness, pain, sleep disturbances.
• Reduced drug induced side effects.
