3. Our Time Essay
Alex Leen
9/5/12
English 110, 11:00
Final Draft of paper 1 In the essay Our Time by John Edgar Wideman he often takes a break from
the narrative to address that he has many problems as a writer. He does this to try to consciously
address these problems and hopefully solve these problems. He believes that if these problems are
not rectified he would destroy any chance he has at telling a truthful account of his brother s story.
To rectify these problems he employs a variety of unique techniques in his writing. Looking at these
techniques it is not always 100% clear how these are fixing his problems. It is also evident that the
way he is writing may be going against a lot of things we were taught in school about our writing.

The first of the three is Garth s death. When Garth died he lost his best friend, one of the few
people that he truly loved. After Garth died Robby got big into drugs, I think its cause he was
depressed after the loss and wanted to forget. It was a major turning point in Robby s life and in
my opinion the most important of the three events that could have started the story. The second
one is his own birth. People may wonder why this wouldn t be the logical starting point seeing as
how it s his birth and makes sense chronologically. The reason this can be seen as starting point
of his troubles isn t because he was born so it could happen as you d probably think. It s because
for as long as he could remember his birthday was overshadowed. It was right after Christmas so
it always felt a little insignificant compared to the biggest holiday of the year. There were also the
unfortunate events of death that seemed to follow his birthday around like a cloud. All of his
Grandparents died near his birthday and that has to take a toll on you. To have your birthday
associated with the deaths of loved ones must be extremely hard. The third and final possible
starting point is his childhood home in Shadyside. Nothing particularly traumatizing happened in
this passage but it s still important none the less. In this he talks about how he grew up in a
predominantly white neighborhood. He was around white people all the time and felt that they had
it easier than him. Also

So, agriculture has to do with that fact:
Fast food chains serve the same food over the world. That means they serve the same French
fries made from the same type of potatoes and the same salads made from the same type of
lettuce and tomatoes in every country. Fats food chains move into countries where the fast food
ingredients are quite different from traditional local ingredients. Local farmers abandon their
traditional crops and try to grow food needed for the very limited international menus. This
reduces diversity of local crops (Hiramoto 35 37) In September of this year in New York Times
appeared a new article that demonstrated the fact that was observed by long year pediatrician Dr.
Michalis Stagourakis. He stated that there is ratio between bad diet and maladies as sniffles, and
stomachaches that are interspersed with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol . Bad diet
resources were described as places were children could buy fast food: pizza parlor, vending
machines and other shops supplying junk food (ROSENTHAL ).
Tendency to obesity eating fast food was proven by many experiments. For example, Indian experts
propose, there is ratio between growing malnutrition and obesity. According that normal humans
diet was changed into fast diet , some changes in humans body was observed (Chatterjee 1948).
The same fact was proven by American experts. Data from a nationally representative survey shown

11. The Battle Of Leipzig And The Battle Of Leipzig
The Battle of Leipzig The Battle of Leipzig involved an exciting alliance that put into the
battlefield against Napoleon, close to one million soldiers. This is the most substantial number
of Soldiers ever assembled at this time in history. The battle of Leipzig is incorrectly compared
to the campaigns of Austerlitz, Borodino, and Waterloo. Similarities are the disposition of forces
and how events unfolded on one battlefield among two distinct lines of troops. Each line
advanced towards each other, with the cavalry making a critical decision to turn a flank or risk
opening a line of advance in the center. The infantry may exploit this action. The Battle of
Leipzig was nothing like former assaults that were decisive by day s end, and most resemble the
apparent disorganization of vast armies and retreat which were characteristic of much of the
fighting in Russia just a year earlier in 1812. As this essay demonstrates, the Battle of Leipzig is
best studied by looking ahead at wars waged by complex movements of mass formations. These
formations consisted of allied armies whose coordination and reliability increased or decreased in
conjunction with the relationship between the generals and kings or national leaders associated
with them. The same proportionality in relationships became evident in both world wars and
currently in Syria. Napoleon s often debated decision to embark on an unfamiliar defensive strategy
at Leipzig led to his army running out of ammunition. In fact,

13. The Use Of Symbolism In Traveling Through The Dark
Symbolism is used in everything from movies to stories, EVERYTHING. Symbolism is the use
of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Symbols can be used to describe or mean something
else. For example, empty pockets can be used as a symbol to describe not having any money. It
can be used in many different ways and forms. Symbols are used everyday and time are really
hard to notice what they truly mean. The following poems all use different symbols, but all stand
for deception the poems are Traveling Through the Dark by William Stafford, We Wear the Mask
by Paul Laurence Dunbar, Richard Cory by Edwin Arlington Robinson, and The Lotteryby Shirley
Jackson.
To begin with, the poem Traveling Through the Dark the car is symbolized as death. In real life
time a car is used as a form of transportation, but can also bring death to those involved in an
accident. The narrator states, Traveling though the dark I found a deer dead on the edge of the
Wilson river road (lines1 2). He says that he has found a dead deer on by the river that another
car might have hit before. This car that the narrator is in come be a sign of death coming again
to a unborn baby. He says, . . . then pushed her over the edge into the river (line18). After finding
the dead deer he decides to move the deer to prevent another accident, later to find out that an
unborn is still alive. He makes his way towards a cliff pushing off the dead and now dead baby
fawn to dispose of the bodies. Nordstrom comments, the car is certainly described as a death
bringer (Nordstrom). Nordstrom understands that death is disguised by a car and as the car
approaches the deer, its death making its way again. Next the poem named We Wear the Mask
deals with what slaves would relate to during the slavery having to cover up their true feelings.
A mask is used as a symbol as it is used to hide the true feelings of those who are in grief and
sorrow. In the poem it states, We wear the mask that grins and lies . . . (line 1). Right off the bat
the writer agrees to wearing a mask that does not show true emotions. The writer is most likely not
willing to show his or her true feelings, because during the time slaves were not supposed to be
happy and were not

They need to be knowledgeable of Center s policy but also have an understanding of harassment

HR Managers need to be alert to potential harassment and discrimination issues and act
appropriately, either directly or through the appropriate line manager/s. They also must be able to
give impartial and expert advice to people involved in harassment and discrimination cases, both
complainants and alleged offenders.
Victims of harassment in particular may need support and reassurance about the Center s policy
and procedures as well as assurance of confidentiality. The HR Manager should identify appropriate
sources of professional counseling for victims at/for each duty station.
Assisting management in establishing avenues of assistance at all duty stations
While the HR Manager is usually the ultimate source of expert advice and guidance on harassment
and discrimination in each Center, she/he obviously cannot be at every duty station simultaneously.
The HR Manager may even operate in a different time zone than some of the Center s duty stations.
Consequently staff members at all duty stations who may be experiencing harassment need to have
immediate avenues of assistance. These would either be at their duty station or for their duty
station if it has a very small staff.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding, involves the theme about civilization and savagery, which
occurs throughout the novel. This story starts by when this British airplane crashes in the

the boys first meet, they have assemblies and they choose a leader which is Ralph, one of the
main characters. Considering they have a leader, the plan after was to try to plant roles for
everyone, for example: getting food, building a shelter, so they could survive, while they were

18. Disadvantages Of Medicinal Plants
In recent decades there has been increased public interest in prevention, control and treatment of
diseases by medicinal plants. However, providing the required resources from wild growing species
couldn t always meet the demand. Anthropogenic interferences with natural habitats and
ecosystems, and threats posed by humans to comply the demand make many medicinal plants
endangered. Cultivation of medicinal plants to provide needed plantmaterials is one of the
strategies to conserve the plants and avoid depletion of wild resources. Furthermore, using
cultivated plants material instead of wild collected ones has some other advantages such as
precise control of growing condition, harvesting at right time, and reduction the possibility of
adulteration. However, it should be considered chemical constituents may vary between cultivars

potentially impeding a teacher s capacity to efficiently execute routine classroom management

4.Simplify the steps, and make more visible the option to include a teacher s signature line when
generating reports. Including a Signature Line on a report is a frequent task by users, hence should
not have to manipulate several options to locate it. Currently, the user have to manipulate several
steps to find the signature line, this can be time consuming and frustrating, especially for a novice
user or intermediate user, which was the case during the observation.
5.Simplify the steps to generate reports. Currently to generate a final grade and verification
report requires the user to complete approximately 10 steps. A user generating five successive
reports must chose an incorrect reporting period before the correct one can be selected. For
example, the first report for year, year one is selected, then the second report for quarter 4, another
period such as quarter 1 must be selected and then go back and select quarter 4 before the quarter 4
report can be generated. This is time consuming and reduces the memorability of the Interface.

The special features of the Independence Hall widely vary. In this exact building, on the 4th of
July 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed and soon after the Constitution of The
United States was drafted, debated and signed. Representatives from the 13 colonies were present,
and it is widely agreed that this building is the birthplace of the United States of America. The
building itself has significantly changed over its 260 year existence. The most notable changes
have been in the 1830s, when the assembly room was restored and the steeple reconstructed, by
revival architect, John Haviland. In the 1950s, the National Park Service returned it to its original
1753 appearance.

the sixth criteria to become a World Heritage Site. This event is widely celebrated in the United
States of America, with this day becoming a public holiday in America, and with it comes along

The Independence Hall Park, which is the surrounding park, is also a highly visited place in
Philadelphia. People of all ages come here to celebrate their American heritage, and to spend time
with their family.
Independence Hall itself is packed with enough history for two World Heritage Sites. The second
floor of the building was once used as a museum of natural history, as well as the basement being
used as a dog pound. While the British occupied Philadelphia in 1777, it was also used as a
hospital for American soldiers.

22. Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Market Economy
Market Economy A market economy is one of the types of economies. In this particular economy
economic decisions and the pricing of goods and services are done by the citizens and businesses
of the economy. The market economy is the complete opposite of a command economy. Adam
Smith, David Ricardo and Jean Baptiste developed the idea of a market economy in the late 19th
early 20th centuries. With a market economy the idea is based off of a supply and demandsystem
with citizens and businesses. With this system there is rarely or ever any government involvement.
Almost all governments nowadays have this type of economic systeminfiltrated in their economy
in some way. They will either have a full market economy or they will have a mixed economy
which is most common, this is an economy with some government influence but mainly based
off citizens and businesses. In my opinion I think there are advantages and disadvantages to this
economic system. I ll start with the disadvantages. One of the main disadvantages would be not
having a deciding power or having someone in charge to step in when something doesn t make
sense or is a bad idea that becomes undecided between citizens and businesses. Another
disadvantage is that sometimes too much freedom can be a bad thing, free reign to do what you
want can be cool and nice until people start using that freedom in a negative way. However there
are also advantages, one of them being the absolute freedom and the ability to do and vote

When does the symbol of someone s historical heritage and regional identity become unacceptable

development based on the psychosocial theory of Erik Erikson: Middle childhood (6 12), Early
adolescence (12 18), Later adolescence (18 24) and Middle adulthood (34 60). Erik Erikson was a
psychoanalyst who described development as a series of eight psychosocial stages. At each stage
there are development tasks to master and a central conflict that the individual can resolve

27. The Overall Problem At Apple Inc.
The overall problem at Apple Inc. is a stagnant iPhone growth problem due to decreased innovation
and marketing efforts. Apple has hit a static point in its growth and continues to lose market share
to its global competitors while trying to recover and invent the next big product (Seeking Alpha,
2017). Apple s innovation and marketing efforts have been minimal and thus reflect in the company
s declining global position, pricing and current growth statistics.
Apple Inc. has been stagnant over the past two years despite successful profits, a fast growing

Apple lost valuable market share to Chinese manufacturers Huawei and Oppo, which saw
promising increases in their shares year over year (9to5Mac, 2017). Currently, the iPhone market
share is decreasing in China, the world s second largest economy after the U.S., which can be
attributed to new manufacturers and iPhone users delaying upgrades (9to5Mac, 2017). While all
products go through a product life cycle, Apple has already been through this cycle with at least
two products (Forbes, 2016). Currently, Apple has no backup to replace its vanguard iPhone
product. Adding to injury, the competing Huawei P9 phone compares well against the iPhone 7

Symbolic ethnicity is a term coined by Herbert Gans. It refers to ethnicity that is individualistic in
nature and without real social cost for the individual. These symbolic identifications are essentially
leisure time activities, rooted in nuclear family traditions reinforced by voluntary enjoyable
aspects of being ethnic (Gans 424 429). Symbolic ethnicity is practiced and enjoyed by white
Americans. It is a way for descendants of white Europeans to learn about and be proud of their

This creates a situation where Caribbean blacks who are steeped in heritage are typically unable to
partake in their own ethnic celebrations like their white counterparts. When Caribbean blacks
arrive in America, they attempt to distance themselves from the American black (Ogbu, J.U. 425

these types of celebrations. Every time a black organization wants to march or celebrate, the KKK
or other white supremacist group alternatively marches to cause conflict. When this type of
celebration does take place, it is typically limited locally to black neighborhoods with no media
coverage. Asians are treated in a similar fashion being grouped together as one nation. There are
Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean and Cambodian to name a few. These people when

opportunity to express their own national heritage or culture in America. Grouping of these
minorities puts all blacks whether American or otherwise and Asians under the same umbrella and
therefore dealing with the same stereotypes. These images

People undergo total knee replacement when arthritis or injury erodes the joint s natural cushioning

There are actually three reasons the doctor (an orthopedic surgeon) will recommend an artificial
knee. These are: 1) to relieve pain 2) to restore function and 3) to achieve stability. As the arthritic
knee becomes more painful, the patient will use it less. Function, therefore, is lost. As the arthritic
knee continues to deform, the patient will feel that the joint is wobbly or unstable.
The most common indication for total knee replacement is osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint
disease. The end stage of osteoarthritis is wearing out of cartilage (smooth, gliding bone ends)
resulting in bone to bone contact in diseased joints. It is progressive and becomes increasingly
painful as the cartilage erodes. Younger people who get knee replacements have damaged their
joints by trauma (accidents that destroy joint surfaces), infection, cancer or tumor, and
inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Painful knees are the most common manifestation of osteoarthritis, while osteoarthritis in turn is
the most common of the different kinds of arthritis. About 60 percent or more of arthritis sufferers

painful of the hundred or so forms of arthritis.

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz Duddy is No Monster
I think you re rotten, says Yvette at the end of The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, I wish you

of Mordecai Richler s tale. At best, we question whether Duddy has learned anything during his
apprenticeship; at worst, we accuse him of taking a tremendous step backwards, of becoming an
utterly contemptible human being. When Duddy steals money from his friend and admirer, Virgil,

The force of Max s storytelling teaches Duddy that the Boy Wonder is someone to be emulated. In

presents an image of success, and Max Kravitz s tales make him out to be the ultimate
accomplished businessman, Jerry Dingleman is a corrupt, cruel person. For his entire life,
Duddy has been told that he will never succeed, but he is resilient. With the Boy Wonder as his
example, Duddy intends to prove everyone wrong. He liked to think, in fact, that point for point
he was a lot like the Boy Wonder before he had made his name (62). The audience is made aware,
fairly early on, that the Boy Wonder is a crook, but this information eludes Duddy until far into
the story, when Duddy has already achieved some measure of success by his own means, part of it
by the trickery he mastered during his high school years, but now that he has matured quite a bit,

A wise man once told me, first impressions are everything. If you think about it, it appears to be
true. You only get one chance to make a first impression, there are no do overs. Generally, a first
impression lets others get a feel of how that person is going to act. Imagine meeting a co worker
with poor grammar for the first time. It would most likely lead you to assume that they have a
very mediocre education level. As you see, grammar is a key factor in the workplace. Some
reasons to why it is important is; Proper grammar affects how others feel about or respond to each

job applicants a grammar test. He says I will not hire people who has bad grammar unless they
have serious extenuating circumstances like dyslexia or those who are learning English as a
second language. As you see people are ultimately judged by their grammar. Mr. Wiens would
not want someone who uses to when they are supposed to use too or vise versa represent his
company. Grammar in this day age can also define a person, especially if one does not know the
other particularly well. Poor Grammar can also display a person s intelligence or laziness. In

To Whom It May Concern, Stephen Gould and Richard Lewontin article called The Spandrels of
San Marco and the Panglossian Paradigm: a Critique of the Adaptationist Programme resembles
Dobzhansky s 1973 work because of similar dynamic between religion and evolution. This shows a
consistent religious aspect in most evolutionary writing; however, in Dobzhansky 1973 article, he
tried to persuade people to convert to evolution. Furthermore, Gould and Lewontin show how the
religious spandrels do not adaptation cost compared to organism s adaptation while providing and
don t dabble further into religion. A spandrel is the space between two arches (art history class).

For example, you can have pillar that holds up the vaulted ceilings (I watched a video on this in
my art history class). Therefore, the builders at the time had to choose a design for the churches,
like the St. Mark s Cathedral, so they chose the only known structure, during this period, to be
able to hold a dome roof. Specifically, the spandrels described earlier are actually adaptive because
they formed from the benefits of its structure. Their whole point for the use of spandrels was to
comment on unsupported theories about adaptation. It is ironic that Gould and Lewontin s, by
using this analogy, are making an unsupported opinion or storytelling, as they called it. Therefore, I
would suggest Gould and Lewontin stick with what they know and do not try to incorporate
information from fields that they do not fully understand. Dobzhansky, a professor in genetics,
made the same error in his 1973 work by referencing astrometry, which brings many critics through
future research. Furthermore, I would use art in general sense because, although numerous works
do have meaning, a baby s scribble has no meaning. Thus, this signifies that there is no purpose for
change, non adaption. It seems that evolutionary biologists are better off when they focus on a
system, like development, living, and evolution itself, than analogies, which is for English majors.

for the corporation, even the move of corporate atmosphere to a paperless society. This move
allowed the company to participate in tax advantages of energy savings as well as reduce the cost
of paper supplies and printing cost.

41. How To Hack A Doll
This article is alarming and frightening to read about. Something as seemingly innocuous as a
doll was capable of being manipulated and hacked to gather sensitive, personal information. I
think the scariest part is that we don t know who hacked the dolls and if they did, what their
intentions were for using their dolls, specifically, as a medium. If it wasn t for this article, I would
have never imagined that a hackerwould hack a doll because it isn t commonly heard of. Usually,
in the news, I hear about cell phones, webcams, laptops, and those sort of technological devices
being hacked. Although I was surprised to read this, I feel as if I shouldn t be because the reality
is that anything can be the object of exploitation and manipulation as long as there is intent behind
it. In fact, this actually reminds me of an article that I read a while back about a baby monitor
being hacked. In a similar fashion, the hacker interacted with the child in a disturbing way.
When I read this article, my first initial thought was that the Cayla dolls were being used as a tool
or decoy so that the hackers could directly come in contact with the children. I assume the hackers
that actually interacted with the children had motives associated with them because I can t see ...

So, when the hacker talks to them through the doll, it causes them to associate the hacker with
those positive emotions, which essentially creates a sense of familiarity. Thus, when the child and
hacker do meet and make first direct contact, a relationship is already fostered. Also, since dolls
serve as a friend and companion, children usually share intimate thoughts, feelings, and etc. with
them. This allows the hacker to exploit and take advantage of the child s vulnerabilities either
through blackmail or other nefarious means. This was my theory behind it, but admittedly, that
sounds quite far fetched looking

42. Explain How To Be A Woman In The Early 1800s
How To:
Be A Woman In The Early 1800s
Home Life:
In the 18oo s, everything that a woman could do was dictated by the man in her home. They
were treated as property, first of their father, then to the man they would marry. A woman s only
life goal was only ever to get married. Marriage was the only way for a woman to keep wealth (until
1839, when the Married Women s Property Acts allowed women to be legally separated from their
husbands) was through the marriage of a wealthy gentleman, despite everything else. Once
married, women were expected to stay home and care for their children. Women would also rarely
escaped their lives in order to attend to their guests and the state of their home. Women were easily
separated into three classes: the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The worth of a woman was only dictated on the man who was willing to wed her. Once a woman
was married, she had accomplished her life goal. Marriage for a woman in the 1800s was
essentially a contract set in stone. It gave up all of a woman s rights (which belonged to the father
before) to her new husband. This new husband had the right to dictate every moment in the woman
s life. Because women could not own their own money, if she was to come into fortune, then, ...all
of her inheritance ... would belong to her husband. Her husband had rights to everything a woman
had, including her body. This notion was supported by both the law as well as the marriage vows:
written into the marriage ceremony was a vow to obey her husband[...] (Taylor, online). (Smith,

43. Significance of Pericles Death
Significance of Pericles Death
The death of Pericles was a significant event in the course of the Peloponnesian War; however, even
without Pericles leadership the Athenian Assembly had countless opportunities to prevent their loss
and chose not to take them. The fickleness and inefficiency of democracy ( the mob ) allowed the
Athenians to be easily influenced and therefore electing populists such as Cleon, Lysicles and
Hyperbolus into dominant leadership roles. Election, via democratic means, of such populists,
meant that the Athenians would take a much more aggressive approach to the war and therefore
abandon the policies that Pericles had previously established. So in turn, democracy the institution
for which the Athenians fought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that Alcibiades, one of the three commanders, was recalled for committing sacrilegious
activities, worsened their predicament, and deprived the Athenian military of the one leader who
could have possibly brought success. These factors greatly influenced the outcome of the expedition
and even after substantial losses had occurred, the Assembly continued to refuse Nicias request for
withdrawal. Instead, the Athenians sent major reinforcements to Sicily, and suffered a massive
defeat at the hands of the Peloponnesians. This then left Athens exposed and substantially
defenceless, remaining in this somewhat unfavourable position for sometime. The role of
Alcibiades throughout the expedition, and the remainder of the war, was extremely important, if
not vital to the final outcome of the conflict, proving to be a determining factor of the Athenians
fate.
Brought up from a similar background to that of his uncle, Alcibiades was an extremely ambitious
and inconsistent leader, becoming a dominant factor in the downfall of Athens. His ambitious and
self interested nature is truly displayed by the statement that Oligarchy and democracy were all one
to Alcibiades...and what he was really after was to...come back to Athens (Ibid). Through The
power of Alcibiades influence... (Ibid) and ...his desire to hold the

44. That Can Be Us By Thomas Friedman And Michael Mandelbaum
That Used to be Us by Thomas Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum discusses the four major
challenges that the United States faces, globalization, the IT revolution, chronic deficits, and energy
consumption. The authors also give plausible solutions to the problems facing America and stress
the point that if something is not done now then the United Stateswill face the consequences. Is the
American Century Over? by Joseph Nye argues that the American century is not over, and gives
scenarios of possible consequences for America s actions. He also gives a few countries that
could possible take over as the world s leading country. Both books argue that America has serious
problems that it is facing today, and that if they are not addressed it could lead to the downfall of
the United States.
Friedman and Mandelbaum are both frustrated optimists of America s future (7). They know the
potential American has, and that it is filled with creative talented and hardworking people that can
accomplish almost anything if they work together (Friedman and Mandelbaum, 8). At the same
time, they are frustrated because they discovered that many of those people feel that our country is
not educating the workforce they need, or admitting the energetic immigrants they seek, or
investing in the infrastructure they require, or funding the research they envision, or putting in
place the intelligent tax laws and incentives that our competitors have installed (Friedman and
Mandelbaum, 8). American
