Database administrator deals with the data of an organization, their job is to manage the
data and secure the data from unauthorized usage. The administrator has to control the
privileges on who can view the data. He/she is solely responsible for any malfunctions in the
data storage and maintenance. They have to adapt to certain database management
techniques in order to secure the data. Their job is to design the data, debug the data and
make it accessible to the users.
There are different types of database administrators. Some of the DBA’s prefer to focus on
the logical designing part and others prefer the physical designing part. The database
administrators are classified depending on their area of work. The different areas of focus
are building systems, maintaining, tuning systems, etc.
Different types of Database Administrators are mentioned below:
 System database administrator.
 Database architect.
 Database analyst.
 Data modeler.
 Application database administrator.
 Task oriented database administrator.
 Performance analyst.
 Data warehouse administrator.
Organizations prefer to split the tasks into separate jobs rather than multitasking to allow
the DBA work efficiently in the area of his/her interest.
A brief description of different database administrator’s is given below:
System database administrator:
The system DBA’s are also called production support or physical database administrators.
They deal with the physical aspects of database administration. Their job is to upgrade,
create backups, refresh the memory, maintain and recover the lost data.
Their tasks include:
 They are responsible for installation of new database management soft wares on
systems in the organizations and maintain them.
 Their job is to set and tune the system limitations.
 The make the system work with database management system by tuning the
operating system and network accordingly.
 The interface the applications with new technologies and install the database
administrator tools.
 The make measures and ensure that the DBMS is compatible with the storage
medium and soft wares.
Database Architect:
The job of the database architect is to design new databases and implement them. He/she
is not concerned with the other maintenance jobs and applications. Their only job is to
create new databases for the applications. The applications can be new or existing.
Their tasks include:
 Creating new database models and translates the models into physical designs.
 They have to implement database efficiently, design indexes and map database
objects to storage medium.
 They are responsible for creating back ups and new tactics for recovering the lost
data.
Database analyst:
The role of a database analyst is some times similar to the role of a database architect. The
job of the database analyst is to analyze the data and make the data available to the users.
Application database administrator:
The application DBA is held responsible for the administration of specific applications. Their
job is to write SQL and debug and finds the easy ways to incorporate the requests into
programs. He/she are responsible for managing the changes in the database and tuning the
performance.
Their tasks include:
 Their job is to focus on individual applications and provide better service.
 He/she should have a good understanding on how the application works and enabling
good support to the need of application developers.
 They are responsible for managing all the application components and ensure that
the application is efficient.
Task oriented database administrator:
The task oriented personals are responsible backup of the data and should recover the data
in times of loss of the data.
Performance analyst:
The performance analyst deals with the coding part which is done in SQL. He/she should
have a good knowledge regarding programming to make changes to the DBMS and other
applications whenever required.
Data Warehouse Administrator:
The data warehouse administrator should be able to handle the query tools and should be
able to understand the differences between database which supports OLTP and data
warehouse.
