Organizations across the globe ramp up Data Science teams and invest tremendous amounts in ambitious development initiatives. Hardly any CEO left who is not into developing a data driven organization or – even better – activating AI to become a true disruptor. Despite the highly motivated key stakeholders and rapidly growing data assets, many Data Science projects ultimately go wrong. Some of them produce impressive prototypes or MVPs and yet, fail to generate real impact. Data Science development with impact and at scale needs to address the differences between pure software development and development with analytical focus and high invention risk.

Today, an estimated 8.5% of the Belgian employees are at risk of burnout. This represents a huge potential cost to organizations and a huge personal risk for employees. Together with SD Worx, a large Belgian HR service provider, we succeeded in predicting expected future absenteeism, by combining historical absenteeism with softer measures like evaluations and surveys. At DISummit 2017, we shared the main conclusions of this exciting project, and we offer our view on why we succeeded in this challenge.

Is your company always focused on one-time opportunities? Are you always unclear on what requirements to clarify next? Projects changing all the time? I've been there.
In April 2019 I joined an Artificial Intelligence company which was mainly driven by sales opportunities with no focus on long-term goals. You can imagine how difficult it was for me to define product requirements that made sense in the long-run and to write user stories that met teams' "definition of ready".
In this talk I want to share one technique that helped me aligning stakeholders towards priorities and being clear of what was coming next: RICE prioritization. I will share my struggles and successes on getting there.

According to recent research report by Wall Street Journal, AI project failure rates near 50%, more than 53% terminates at proof of concept level and does not make it to production. Gartner report says that nearly 80% of the analytics projects are not delivering any business value. That means for every 10 projects, only 2 projects are useful to the organization. Let us pause here a moment, rather than looking at what makes AI projects to fail, let’s look at the challenges involved in AI projects and find a solution to overcome these challenges.
AI projects are different from traditional software projects. Typical software projects, as shown in Figure 1, consist of well-defined software requirements, high level design, coding, unit testing, system testing, and deployment along with beta testing or field testing. Now, organizations are adopting Agile process instead of traditional V or waterfall model, but still steps mentioned are valid.
However, AI and Machine Learning projects’ methodology is different from the above. Our experience working on many AI/ML projects has given us insights on some of the challenges of executing AI projects. Also, we are in regular touch with senior executives and thought leaders from different industries who understand the success formula. The following discussion is based on our practical experience and knowledge gained in the field.
Successful execution of AI projects depends on the following factors:
1. Clearly aligned Business Expectations
2. Clarity on Terminologies
3. Meeting Data Requirements
4. Tools and Technology
5. Right Resources
6. Understanding Output Results
7. Project Planning and the Process

PwC's recently released Responsible AI Diagnostic surveyed around 250 senior business executives from May to June 2019. The survey says that 84% of CEOs agree that AI-based decisions need to be explainable in order to be trusted. In the past few years, Deep learning has shown remarkable results in various applications, which makes it one of the first choices for many AI use cases. However, deep learning models are hard to explain, and since the majority of CEOs expect AI solutions to be explainable, deep learning has a serious challenge. Daniel Kahneman, in his book thinking fast and slow, presented two different systems the human brain uses to form thoughts and decisions: System 1: fast, intuitive and hard to explain System 2: slow, conscious and easy to explain In this talk I will present: A) PwC Responsible AI Survey B) A proposed deep learning framework that mimics the two systems of thinking C) The recent advances in the neural symbolic learning field.
There are many models for engaging in corporate venturing and innovation. But how can we expand the models we think of when we think of "strategic partnerships"? And what practices can we engage in so these initiatives aren't conducted as isolated engagements but as ones that can centrally influence the business? Drawing on lessons learned and experiences from PARC today, CEO Steve Hoover will share cases and specific innovation practices we can engage in, particularly for moving ideation to impact, optimizing for timing especially under uncertainty, and for influencing the entire organization.
PARC presented this talk during the "Innovation Storytelling: Nurturing The Seeds of Innovation, Case Study Illustrations" segment at the IBF Corporate Venturing and Innovation Partnering conference on February 7, 2012.
Attended by corporate investors, new business development executives, venture capitalists, private equity investors, mergers & acquisition executives, institutional investors, technology transfer experts, licensing executives, investment bankers, corporate counsel, as well as CTOs, CIOs, CEOs and CFOs of emerging growth companies, this annual International Business Forum event shares strategies to gain a competitive advantage through corporate venturing and innovation initiatives. Over two days, attendees will have an opportunity to share B2B alliance models, investment approaches, strategies to capture technology innovation from external sources, and insights on ways to enhance their corporate venturing initiatives.

Advanced Project Data Analytics for Improved Project DeliveryMark Constable
Data Analytics is already beginning to impact how projects are delivered. We can now automate minute taking and capturing actions, we can use Flow to progress chase, Power BI reduces the burden of reporting.
But we are just scratching the surface. It won’t be long before we can leverage the rich dataset of experience to predict what risks are likely to occur, understand which WBS elements will be susceptible to variance, deduce what the optimum resource profile looks like, define a schedule by leveraging data from those projects that have gone before.
The role of a project professional is about to change dramatically. In this webinar we will explore the challenges and opportunities, and how we should respond. It’s a call-to-action for the community to mobilise, help to reshape project delivery and understand the implications for you and your organisation.
Presenter Martin Paver is a Chartered Project Professional, APM Fellow and Chartered Engineer. In December 2017 he established the London Project Data Analytics meetup which has quickly spread across the UK and expanded to 3000+ members. Martin has major project experience including leading a $billion projects with a team of 220 and a multi-billion PMO with a team of 50. He has a detailed grasp of project management and combines this with a broad understanding of recent developments in the field of data science. He is on a mission to ensure that the project management profession readies itself for a transformed future.

Data Science Development Lifecycle - Everyone Talks About it, Nobody Really K...Rising Media Ltd.
Data science is rapidly becoming the primary catalyst for product innovation. However, most of the projects are stuck in the Proof-of-Concept (POC) phase. Christian and René had the chance to be part of GfK’s journey from a traditional market research company to a prescriptive data analytics provider. In order to build end-to-end data-driven products successfully, it is necessary to blend what existing frameworks like SCRUM and CRISP provide with the best practices from software engineering. You will learn about how they gradually established a data science development lifecycle that overcomes the POC-trap by considering production realities from day 1. Leveraging core concepts like KPI-driven development and micro-services they are able to successfully develop, deploy, scale and maintain data science models in production.
Creating Community at WeWork through Graph Embeddings with node2vec - Karry LuRising Media Ltd.
Embeddings have become a powerful tool for representing discrete entities as continuous vectors. Recent advances have extended the original text embedding framework to accommodate new types of data. Of particular interest is a novel algorithm called “node2vec” that learns embeddings for nodes in a network. This is an especially pertinent use case for our team, since WeWork’s member community can conveniently be expressed in graphical form. In this talk, we’ll discuss how we use “node2vec” to create rich feature representations of WeWork communities, and then build recommendation services that are powered by these trained models.

The Scout24 Data Landscape Manifesto: Building an Opinionated Data PlatformRising Media Ltd.
The Scout24 Data Landscape Manifesto is the formalization of our opinions on how a successful data-driven company should approach data. In a truly data-driven company, no manager, no salesperson, no engineer and no data scientist can do their job properly without easy access to large amounts of high-quality data. It is Sean's mandate to create a platform that encourages the production of high-quality data and enables engagement with data by all employees. He and his team are opinionated about how all producers and consumers of data need to be active participants in the data platform, to make data-driven decisions and to be responsible for the data they produce. And he built the data platform with 'nudges' that reward data usage that matches his vision for a data-driven company. In this talk, Sean will present the Scout24 Data Landscape Manifesto and will show how the strong opinions it contains enabled him to successfully migrate from a classic centralized data warehouse to a decentralized, scalable, cloud-based data platform at AutoScout24 and ImmobilienScout24 that is core to their analytics and machine learning activities.

The Centrality of a Detailed Understanding of your AudienceRising Media Ltd.
For media organizations an understanding of one's audience is key to delivering optimal content. The path to this understanding often runs through logged behavioral data, but can we leverage methods from the world of polling to generate additional insights?
The “Big Data” and “Data Science” rhetoric of recent years seems to focus mostly on collecting, storing and analysing existing data. Data which many seem to think they have “too much of” already. However, the greatest discoveries in both science and business rarely come from analysing things that are already there. True innovation starts with asking Big Questions. Only then does it become apparent which data is needed to find the answers we seek.
In this session, we relive the true story of an epic voyage in search of data. A quest for knowledge that will take us around the globe and into the solar system. Along the way, we attempt to transmute lead into gold, use machine learning to optimise email marketing campaigns, experiment with sauerkraut, investigate a novel “Data Scientific” method for sentiment analysis, and discover a new continent.
This ancient adventure brings new perspectives on the Big Data and Data Science challenges we face today. Come and see how learning from the past can help you solve the problems of the future.
Data Centers - Striving Within A Narrow Range - Research Report - MCG - May 2...pchutichetpong
M Capital Group (“MCG”) expects to see demand and the changing evolution of supply, facilitated through institutional investment rotation out of offices and into work from home (“WFH”), while the ever-expanding need for data storage as global internet usage expands, with experts predicting 5.3 billion users by 2023. These market factors will be underpinned by technological changes, such as progressing cloud services and edge sites, allowing the industry to see strong expected annual growth of 13% over the next 4 years.
Whilst competitive headwinds remain, represented through the recent second bankruptcy filing of Sungard, which blames “COVID-19 and other macroeconomic trends including delayed customer spending decisions, insourcing and reductions in IT spending, energy inflation and reduction in demand for certain services”, the industry has seen key adjustments, where MCG believes that engineering cost management and technological innovation will be paramount to success.
MCG reports that the more favorable market conditions expected over the next few years, helped by the winding down of pandemic restrictions and a hybrid working environment will be driving market momentum forward. The continuous injection of capital by alternative investment firms, as well as the growing infrastructural investment from cloud service providers and social media companies, whose revenues are expected to grow over 3.6x larger by value in 2026, will likely help propel center provision and innovation. These factors paint a promising picture for the industry players that offset rising input costs and adapt to new technologies.
According to M Capital Group: “Specifically, the long-term cost-saving opportunities available from the rise of remote managing will likely aid value growth for the industry. Through margin optimization and further availability of capital for reinvestment, strong players will maintain their competitive foothold, while weaker players exit the market to balance supply and demand.”

Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.
