Dance Program Application Essay
I have been involved in multiple organizations throughout high school. In my freshman year, I
joined the Art Club and was inducted into the National Art Honor Society at the end of the year for
my involvement in the art program at Columbus High. I joined French Club at the beginning of
sophomore year. I have been studying ballet for ten years, and have been a member of the Columbus
Ballet company for three years. This includes corp de ballet and soloist roles in each production put
on by the studio. I have been involved with the Christ Community Church youth ministry and their
outreach programs for three years. Finally, I started attending CrossPointe Church youth group,
starting at the beginning of this school year and have enjoyed ... Show more content on

I am also interested in continuing to dance after high school, so I believe GHP would be a wonderful
way to get a glimpse into what it would be like to attend a dance program in college.
I have attended several summer intensive programs in the past, and I have found value in being in an
environment in which everyone has the same goal and is willing to sacrifice blood, sweat, and tears
in order to achieve that goal. However, out–of–town intensives can become extremely expensive, so
being able to attend GHP would be an incredible and beneficial opportunity to receive the training
from an out–of town intensive without having to consider financial issues.
Unlike many dancers today, I am a classically trained ballet dancer. I have been in ballet classes and
performances consistently since age seven and en pointe since age twelve. Many dancers now have
only received training in modern, jazz, or hip hop, so I believe that having a technical ballet
background can be very advantageous for the study of other styles of dance. Ballet is known as the
foundation for every form of dance, so having a strong ballet technique is vital, especially
considering how hard it is to find in today's modern

En Pointe Shoes: A Peep Into The Dance World
A peep into the ballet world
In order for a dancer to go en pointe a (s)he must develop a certain amount of muscles that include,
core muscles, leg muscles, lower back, and ankles. If a dancer goes en pointe without building those
muscles it could really damage his or hers feet. On the bright side there are many very interesting
things about ballet and pointe shoes. While en pointe or dancing in general the body muscles must
be in use which consist of closed ribs, pulling up under belly button, turn hips out, ankles being
turned out, lastly push tail bone down. While en pointe and or just dancing without being en pointe
do all those things plus balance body weight and breath. While 65% of dancers go en pointe at an
early age as a result ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While dancing especially ballet there are a number of things that need to be done to make it look so
easy. First pull up underneath the belly button, ribs should be closed like (s)he has on a corset,
shoulders should be down, the neck is extended while the chin is also up, chest is out with
confidence, hips should be rotating back the whole time to maintain that turnout, turnout the ankles
too, tail bone is down , and only natural arch in back. Just have fun and dance with confidence,
grace, and beauty. There are many different positions in the ballet world but for now here are the
basic one's. First position of the feet is when the heels are touching while the hips were rotated and
turned out. Second position is like first except the feet are spread apart but still turned out. Third
position, is where the arch of the foot is next to the heel of the foot and always turned out meaning
the feet are going different ways. Second to last is fifth position is like heel toe, heel toe for example
the heel of the right foot is in front of the heel of the left foot and the same for the other foot. Lastly
sixth position, the heels are touching and the toes are touching but this time the feet are turned in.
The language ballet is spoken is French because ballet started in France. Pli`e means to bend,
Fondue which means to melt or to sink down, and lastly

"But I don't want to go!" I remember screaming as my mom put my new ballet shoes on my feet;
and I guess my first grade self didn't make a reasonable enough argument because there I was at my
first dance lesson. I peeked nervously into the dance studio and saw girls much older than I moving
their arms gracefully with the music as they lifted their legs into an attitude. I remember noticing
that their shoes were different than mine, still the pretty pink color that I loved so much, but they
were standing on them. They had lacey ribbons tied all the way up their calves and beautiful
material surrounded the shoes. Another first grader next to me was quick to boast that she knew
what they were called, they were called pointe shoes and as I continued

Summary Of Life In Motion By Misty Copeland
Have you ever thought what it would be like to be dancing up on your toes with the American Ballet
theatre (ABT)? That's just what happened, Misty Copeland currently a principal dancer at ABT had
a dream to dance there ever since she started to dance and she didn't think that she could do it,but
with training, hard work, and passion you can achieve anything. For the month of September I
decided to read "Life in Motion" written by Misty Copeland. This book was very inspiring in many
ways. I learned so much that I didn't know, not only about Misty Copeland but also about ballet. I
decided to read this book because, Misty Copeland is one of my idols, she is also a big inspiration
and I really wanted to learn more about her. Overall this book was amazing. I would recommend it
to not only ballet dancers but to also people who love non–fiction because it is full of so many
details and a lot of imagery that it makes a person feel like they are in her shoes dancing through her
life. I would recommend this book because many people can relate to Misty Copeland in many
ways, your mind wanders while reading, and because the plot was very unbelievable and surprising.
Imagine reading a book about your idol and thinking wow I really feel like I am a part of their
life. That's just what happened, while I was reading "Life in Motion," I could actually feel and relate
to what was happening to Misty Copeland. I would recommend this book because many people can

My Dance Research Paper
Three things that reflect or describe me include shoes, the studio, and family. I am a dancer and
almost everyday of every week I am at the studio practicing for those three to four minutes I will
have on the Tulsa Performing Arts Center's stage in May. Being a dancer, I have many different
types of shoes and many pairs for each type; I have pointe shoes, or toe shoes, jazz shoes, pirouettes,
soft ballet shoes, foot undies, etc. I learned the hard way to always have a backup pair. Two or three
years ago in the middle of third recital I was running up and down the halls of the dressing rooms
down in the basement looking for my jazz shoes. My dance was on in ten minutes. I ran up the two

senior year I know leaving Miss Shelly's will be harder Bishop Kelley. I have too many memories
inside all three studios and on the pink and white checkered floors. I am now teaching as an assistant
at Miss Shelly's hoping that the little girls in my classes grow to love not only dance but the studio
as much as I do and they find their own dance family. Many of the teachers' children dance at Miss
Shelly's. There is even one family who has three generations dancing there right now. The Miss
Shelly's family and community is filled with the most loving, accepting, and positive people around

Giselle Gender Roles
Ballet is not only a well–known art form with a language that is nearly universal, but also involves a
combination of several elements, including dancers, music, and scenery; commonly performed in
pointe shoes, the movements are very fluid and graceful. The very first era of ballet is referred to as
the romantic period, during which famous ballets with lengthy, complicated story plots such as
Giselle took place. A young woman named Giselle falls in love with a male character named
Albrecht and marries him; only to die of a broken heart when a third character comes in. His name is
Hilarion, and he is also in love with Giselle; he reveals that apparently Albrecht has deceived her.
After an extreme reaction, Giselle is seen as a virgin spirit dancing with a group of other undead
young women who died of a broken heart. Albrecht and Hilarion visit the grave, only to be danced
to death. Giselle's spirit decides to forgive Albrecht and save his life in the end. This is only one of

In Butler article it states, "the relation between the culture and nature presupposed by some models
of gender 'construction' implies a culture and agency of the social which acts upon a nature, which
itself presupposed as a passive surface, outside the social and yet its necessary counterpart." The
setting of Giselle shows us that she isn't the most fortunate but she is happy. On the other hand, you
have Albrecht who is a nobleman that chose to deny his culture and act as peasant to get close to
Giselle. His instinct placed a constructed view on his gender as a male that in turn gave his character
a social meaning some depth. Giselle's spirit after she died could have helped the other virgin spirits
and allow Albrecht to die. But her characters cultural ideas and her view on life saved his life.
Giselle felt that love conquered all and even after she died of a broken heart caused by Albrecht: she

Misconceptions About Dance In Dancing Around The Truth
Dancing Around the Truth:
Misconceptions About Dance
It's seven o'clock on a Friday night as the curtains begin to rise and the lights begin to dim in the
now darkened theatre. Stage lights stream to the front of the room as rows of girls dressed in blush
tutus with hair slicked back perfectly into a bun, shuffle onto the stage in what observers call "toe
shoes". As they begin to dance, the very thought of how simple it is made to look and how it cannot
be that difficult to copy what the beautiful, ballerinas are doing float through the heads of the
audience. However, pun intended, isn't that the "pointe" of dance? The lifestyle of a dancer is often
pre–judged under the misconceptions that dance is easy to do, slightly boring to watch, and not
considered a sport. Dance is believed to be breathtaking but at the same time yielding so much
power through the movement of the body. As Stephanie Merry expressed in her ... Show more

Contrary to the argument ad populum, dancers are determined, artists, performers, actors and
actresses, dreamers, goal–reachers, and most importantly passionate. Without passion there is no
soul, and without soul there can be no dance. Ruth Denis embodies an incredible view of dance
when she says, "I see dance being used as communication between body and soul, to express what it
too deep to find for words". The meaning behind a dance has to be found through the connection
between the body and the music and once it is found it opens a beautiful and sometimes heartfelt
experience that cannot be experienced the same way again. It is visible music to the eyes while
pleasing both the heart and mind as well. The emotions felt when dancing are best drawn out by
Albert Einstein when said, "We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we
dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the
dreams". So, dance

Analysis Of The Hard Nut By Mark Morris
It is incredibly hard to take a classic, a piece known by thousands, recognizable by the first few
notes of music, and change a single thing without inducing wrath. The Hard Nut by Mark Morris is
a contemporary dance piece choreographed in the early 1990s. It is a piece based off of the
Nutcracker, following a slightly altered story, though keeping the original music and much of the
original concept. The dance focused on will be The Waltz of the Snowflakes. This dance, in
particular, reflects concepts of beauty beyond gender, while also reflecting how the concepts of
gender were challenged during the time period that this was originally choreographed and
performed in, reflected through both the choreography and the set. The Hard Nut is a stunning piece
of contemporary ballet alters the original concepts of the Nutcracker while still honoring the
original. The modernized version is meant to take place in possibly 1960s or 1970s, opposed to the
Victorian Era most use, but the setting isn't the only thing that is modernized in this piece. The Waltz
of the Snowflakes is a fan favorite of the original Nutcracker, where the snowflakes, donned in
beautiful white tutus, dance around Clara and the prince, creating a stunning winter scene. The
original and the modernized version do have the costuming in common, which wouldn't be
surprising was it not for the dancers involved. While the Waltz of the Snowflakes is traditionally a
rather feminine piece, Mark Morris chose here to use the entire ensemble, regardless of gender, in
the dance, all of whom wore the same white tutu costumes with headpieces that further hid their
gender and sex. Additionally, the choreography in the dance, unlike most ballet pieces, is not
separated by gender. Each dancer dances the same choreography regardless of their sex or gender.
The choice of contemporary ballet is perfect for the message and concepts behind the piece, taking a
story, or long held dance rules, and bending them to modern times while still protecting the integrity
of the original piece or style. The lack of separation in this piece is a stunning reflection of the
concept that gender or sex has no correlation with beauty.
The choreography in this piece is gorgeous, even

Drawing on inspiration from the classical tutu, my first design, The Odile Vest, was created with the
same glamourous yet athletic aesthetic. The ballet tutu originated in the 1800s and is constructed to
be beautiful and luxurious yet fit like a glove and provide freedom of movement. The Odile Vest
features contoured lines on the front to create a tailored fit and the latest in fabric technology to
provide stretch, support and moisture wicking. In addition, breathable mesh pieces are strategically
placed with inspirations of a tutu skirt and a neoprene scuba is used for the back to provide ultimate
warmth. Applying my self taught entrepreneurial skills I have successfully brought my first piece
from idea to production and it is now being worn by elite dancers globally. My collection and
designs are inspired by the ballerina but are attainable for any workout, shopping trip around the the
city or drinks with friends.
I have created a brand and learned business operations that have skillfully carried my ideas to
production and into the customer's hands. Through participation in this program I hope to gain
knowledge, expertise and a network to help me expand my athleisure collection and take it from the

Dancing En Pointe : An Art Form That Began
Dancing en pointe is an art form that began as an extension from classical ballet many decades ago.
Dancing en pointe is when a ballet dancer, usually a female dancer, rises onto the tips of her toes
with fully extended feet; rising onto her toes while wearing special pointe shoes gives the illusion of
floating and being weightless. Pointe shoes became popular after Charles Didelot created something
called the "Flying Machine," this lifted dancers upward, allowing them to stand on the tips of their
toes before leaving the ground. Choreographers loved the look of the lightness that the flying
machine created that they began to look for ways to incorporate more pointe work into their dances.
Many things in the history of the dance world are uncertain, but it is believed that Marie Taglioni
was the first ballerina to dance en pointe without any sort of contraption. When Marie did first dance
an entire routine en pointe, she had nothing more than modified satin slippers, meaning that she was
literally on the tips of her toes with no support. Dancers during this phase would pad their toes for
comfort and depend on their feet and ankle strength for support. The next phase of pointe shoes,
which was substantially different than what Marie Taglioni used, had a modified toe area; instead of
a more pointed shape, the toe areas were given a sturdy, flat shape to allow dancers to more easily
get on top of their toes. This is when ballet academies could start pushing technique en

Romantic Ballet
The theatre is full of young men and women. The gas lanterns dimly light the room and the
silhouette of a figure can be seen in the shadows of the stage. As she emerges, she is like a dream: a
tall, elegant body with a form fitting bodice and tutu. She is entrancing on her tiny pointe shoes as
she floats across the stage. Love and passion fill the air as she moves in such a way that is almost
magical. The Romantic Ballet Period introduced the aspects of theme, costume, and new technique
to the dance world and its influences are still seen in contemporary works in ballet. Ballet has been
an art form since the late fifteenth century, but society did not truly see the impact of ballet until the
nineteenth century. Modern day thinkers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An article by Camille Hardy states, "Romanticism had deep roots in the national psyches...of
France." Rooted from Neoclassicism, Romanticism revolted against the rigid forms of classic works
(Clark and Crisp). It was essentially a literary movement and influenced almost all movements of
art. The romantics sought out for a way to break free from their classical ancestors and achieved a
great accomplishment than anyone had ever thought possible. In a span of two decades, ballet was
transformed becoming a major theatre art and gaining the acceptance from its viewers (Guest). The
Romantic Ballet period was an international movement spreading from Paris to New York (Garafola
"Rethinking..."). Although it can be seen throughout many cultures, it remained predominantly in
Paris, where it began. The stage was the ballerina's focal point. The Théâtre de l'Académie Royale
de Musique or Paris Opéra first introduced the prospects that Romantic ballet could provide. In fact,
it proved to do much better than critics had once thought. Ballet once being subservient to the Opéra
was now its own theatre art. Before the Romantic period, dancing and singing were performed
together. It was only until the development of the ballet d´action that ballet could be performed
separately from opera. After this, ballet became a major entertainment piece to society, which it
accomplished with only the help of an orchestra (Guest). Before the turn of the

"Now hold it." Those are the worst words a ballet instructor can say. I stood on my tiptoes, hands
above my head, trying to hold my uncomfortable pose. There were about twelve other girls in my
class filling up the wide dance room. There were mirrors on every wall making sure that you would
be able to see your every move. We all wore pink, fluffy tutus with black leotards underneath and
pale pink ballet slippers. I could feel my legs start to shake as I struggled to hold the pose our ballet
instructor had ordered us to do but soon I was on the ground. I could feel all the other girls start to

to get up when I heard the loud tap of some black high heels. The shoes reached to where I was

and older ballerinas as Jenny. Ironically, we had the same name but we were completely different
people. On the first day of classes she made it clear that we must call her Ms.Freel and only

She wore the same black dress that reached her ankles and black tights underneath.I never

Afraid is what I felt when I looked at how

Elements Of Giselle
Raising the Barre As one of the few ballets that has been performed continuously for centuries,
Giselle has become one of the most renowned ballets of all time. Giselle was conceived in 1841 by
Gautier specifically for the famous ballerina of the Paris Opera Ballet, Carlotta Grisi. This ballet was
a product of the thriving creativity of the 19th century. The classic story tells of a young girl,
Giselle, who has caught the eye of two men. As the ballet progresses, Giselle falls in love with one
of the men, only to have her heart broken. Because she is weak in health, Giselle dies of heart break
and is to become one of the Wilis, a clan of ghostly women who haunt men from beyond their
graves. It is obvious that Giselle is from the Romantic era because of the many identifying elements
that connect it to Romanticism as well as the historical influences and gender roles that are reflected
in the ballet's story. Many elements most commonly associated with Giselle include white romantic
tutus, the daunting Wilis, or light, captivating gracefulness of the dancing. This particular ballet has
always been easy to identify because of the specific qualities it possesses. Watching Giselle,
audiences are always drawn to the charming, gentle nature of Giselle, despite how technically
difficult the steps are. In her famous variation from the first act, Giselle completes thirty ballonnés
en pointe with great ease. Furthermore, the eery synchronicity and solemn countenance of the Wilis

You are sitting down in a dressing room, pulling out your leotard and tights out of your ballet bag.
You slip on your tights, and they fit snugly around your legs. You step into your leotard, and feel the
feeling of being a ballerina. Next, you pull a pair of satin pointe shoes from your bag. Yesterday you
had sewn on the laces. You slip the shoes on and cross the laces and tie them. You stand up and walk

It is clear that you have to go through a lot to be a ballet dancer. Ballet is a sport that takes grace, but
also strength. You have to be able to hold 5 positions and do many moves from them. You also have
to wear a certain style, and take part in many performances. These things will help you on your
journey to be a great dancer.
Positions and Moves All moves in ballet circulate around 5 main positions. There is first, second,
third, fourth, and fifth position. First position is where you put your heels together in parallel which
is when you stand in a straight line with your knees together, and open your feet to turn out. Turning

Ballet : A Unique Form Of Dance

the dancers enjoy showing off their talents. Children of all ages are able to become fantastic dancers
with amazing talents that could lead to bight futures but, what some people don't know proves that

also issues involving health and joint such as arthritis that is the outcome of years of dancing. The
history of ballet was originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th and 16th centuries.
From Italy to France, ballet was spreading by the talented Catherine de' Medici. Aristocrat money
was royal money that dictated the ideas of music and literature that were used in the ballet to
entertain the aristocrats at the time. 'Ballet des Polonais' was the first ever staged ballet in 1573
which was commissioned under Catherine de' Medici. It was held to honor the Polish Ambassadors
who were visiting Paris. 'Ballet Comique de la Reine' was the second ballet court commissioned by
Catherine with the help of her compatriot Balthasar de Beaujoyeulx in 1581. However, it was the
first court ballet to display poetry, dance, music, and set design to convey a storyline. Ballet was

The Evolution Of Pointe Shoes
Pointe shoes are the symbol of the ballerina and they have had a huge impact on the history of
dance. They are way more complex than what we tend to think and throughout this essay we will go
over their creation, how they're structured, and how they impacted ballet.
In the early 1700s, the technique of ballet developed rapidly and incorporated a new emphasis on
graceful foot technique. In 1726, Marie Camargo debuted at the Paris Opéra Ballet in a performance
of Les Caractères de la Danse, dancing in slippers instead of heeled shoes. She had also shortened
her stage skirt to show off the turnout of her legs and feet as well as her bas de jambe during
entrechats. After the French Revolution in 1789, emphasis was placed on the functional aspect ...

This resulted in a demand for more elaborate pointe shoes. A wide range of designs were on the
market: from soft block shoes, which are designed for transition from soft shoes to pointe shoes, to
extremely hard shoes, which give extra strength, to machine–manufactured rehearsal pointes for
dance students operating on a smaller budget. About thirty–five ballet shoe manufacturers, such as
Freed, Grishko, Bloch, Capezio, and Gaynor Minden operate in the market. At the end of the
twentieth century, the fashion industry picked up the idea of ribbons and look–alike pointe shoes,
and designer brands such as Manolo Blahnik, Sonia Rykiel, Etro, and Blumarine have used the
pointe shoe style to create "ballerina" fashion shoes.
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, an increasingly challenging ballet technique, en demi
pointe, allowed dancers to carry out multiple pirouettes and jumps. While men were identified as
playing a secondary role in the performance, from this point onward ballerinas rose to the toes and
contributed to a new dance aesthetic. This overt emphasis on the lightness of dancers was reflected
by Marie Taglioni, who appeared sur les pointes in the first performance of La Sylphide in 1832.
Some early examples of pointe shoes from this period are exhibited in the Haydn Museum in

her," De verdad no se pero creo que si". I quickly put everything else on, the huge tutu, the hair
ribbon, and my shoes . It honestly felt like forever until I got to look at myself in the mirror. I just
kept fluffing my tut looking at my bedroom door, blow drying my hair, waiting. My recital was at
6:30, at that moment the small hand on the clock was in between the 5 and the 6 and the long handle
was on the 2. Of course, I had not learned that in school yet. I was so confused and soon enough I
finished blow drying my hair. Still, I waited, I waited for my mom to come in and do my hair so that
I can view myself for the very first time, as a ballerina. Slowly but surely, I turned my head away
from the t.v and there my mom was. Now, the small handle of the clock was closer to the 6 and the
longer hand was on 11. My mom pulled, twisted and tightened my hair. I didn't know what she did

"Again." Mrs. Dames commanded.
I had been at it since 7 o'clock in the morning, my body aching for rest. My father paid for the Ballet

'Like I don't get enough discipline at home.' I thought bitterly to myself. Right now, I am working on
a routine that I will be performing at a competition in America by the end of this week. I had worked

watch his own daughter grow up, I swear that man is married to his job.

Dames was a middle–aged woman with dark brown hair–with many grey hairs strewn across her

"Now, do it again!" She screamed. "This time, I want more emotion being shown on your face, you

I was amazed how we hadn't lost our money yet. Between dance lessons and homeschooling, and

Giselle And The Romantic Era
The romantic era had begun in the early 19th century and was the most innovative era for the ballet.
Known for the reflection of art and literature, the romantic era was the time of fantasy, etherealism
and supernaturalism. Female dancers became the superstars of the ballet especially with the
introduction of pointe work, the iconic romantic tutu and themes of a love that could never be. On a
softly lit stage lights flickered over ghostly forms.
Throughout the romantic era many innovative features were introduced such as gas lighting, trap
doors and fly wires. Gas lighting was used as the transition light from sunshine to moonlight for the
ballet acts. Gas lighting created a mood to tell the story of a love that was destined to fail, especially
in Giselle. The dark light of the second act filtered across the willis as they haunted the graveyard.
Trap doors and fly wires were innovative as it gave the effect of the ballerina's disappearing and
flying through the air delicately.
The ballet Giselle is a romantic ballet based on a forbidden love between a royal and a commoner.
Giselle is a young girl who has a weak heart and falls deeply in love with a royal named Albercht.
Giselle has a strong passion for dancing however, her heart limits her from doing what she loves.
Later in the ballet she finds out that the man she loves dearly is engaged with another woman.
In the romantic era the costuming had a large impact on performances. The costumes complimented
the ballerinas.

"Pointe shoes, pointe shoes, pointe shoes, pointe shoes..." I kept singing, skipping up to the door. I
could tell I was thoroughly annoying mom, hence her exasperated expression. She had not heard the
end of my 'finally getting pointe shoes!' excitement.
"OK, calm down," she attempted using mom voice, but her upturned lips and her laughing eyes
couldn't disguise the fact that she was just as excited as I was.
"Fine," I moaned falsely, strolling up to the door with a pep in my step. I gripped the metal
doorknob, and pulled open the door. The merry–sounding bell chimed as the door creaked open, and
I stepped inside, bag of ballet shoes slung over my shoulder. My senses were immediately

Report: My French À La Carte Project
My French à la carte project was making a slideshow of certain French terms in ballet, explaining
their meaning, and showing a short video of the step. I chose this topic because I have been dancing
since I was five, and I love how elegant and beautiful the steps and movements of ballet sound in
French. During my project, I learned many things about ballet. First, I learned how ballet was
actually first created during the Italian Renaissance, but it was perfected and refined in King Louis
XIV of France's court in the 1700's. I had always thought it was just created by the French.
Additionally, I was fascinated to learn the meaning of several terms, including the word
"arabesque", which means "in Arabic fashion." The term "arabesque" is apparently

Silent Fall : A Short Story : My Silent Fall
My Silent Fall
My mother was the first to notice my silence, my crouching under tables and behind couches when
guests came, and how I wouldn't ask my grandparents for anything when they took care of me for a
week. This shyness made my mother anxious. So, after some analysis, she prescribed ballet.
The old lady with the brown bob, at Portland Dancewear, was second to notice my silence. She wore
plaid maroon clothing and a dangling ballet pointe shoe necklace. I could not have been three, but I
remember that necklace. Silver, perfect. I watched the pink twirl; it spun one second around.
According to my mom, I wouldn't answer the lady's questions about whether my shoes were too
tight or if I knew how to plie yet. The old lady pulled shoe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Now, none of us expected this. There had been times, yes, when this woman made us sit at her feet
and "stretch" while she told us of her love life, or when we really spent the class playing dress up.
But never before had we made pancakes.
Miss Laine led us down a hall and up a dim stairwell, into a craven colored kitchen with a peeling,
chipped linoleum floor. The coloring felt nauseating. The four of us stood huddled at the door, in
silence. We watched Miss Laine extrapolate the necessary pancake ingredients from her dimly lit
fridge and from the high wooden cupboards slapped onto the walls.
We entered only upon instruction to find the mixing bowl. But after that venture, with no further
instruction, we returned to watching.
Bored, I jiggled my static, pink tighted legs and experimented with moving my hips around in a nine
year old mid–morning excitement. Miss Laine noticed.
"Do you need to go to the bathroom?" She asked me through flexed brows.
"No." I hastily brought my feet to a close in their dancing. She knew I didn't know how to ask for
myself. But somehow this question embarrassed me. My skin grew tight with the heating stove top.
"Alright, then hold still and work on balance," Miss Laine replied, "Try some plies, then rise up and
hold it for three." After brief demonstration, she returned to her tannish substance of eggs and milk
and wheat. I immersed myself in a series of plies, rises, and balancing.

The History Of Ballet
Martha Graham once said, "Dance is the hidden language of the soul." Despite what many people
may think, ballet is well known across many of nations all over the world. Ballet has been around
for hundreds years, and has a very important meaning to many people. It would be a satisfying
presumption to think that ballet could change the lives of many people for many years to come.
Ballet tells a story, it originated in France, and there are international ballet companies; this is what
makes the history of ballet interesting.
Many people think that ballet originated in France, since the word "ballet" itself is a french word.
Atlanta Ballet say, "Ballet, as we know it today, began during the Renaissance around the year 1500
in Italy." When ballet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The romantic tutu, a calf–length, full skirt made of tulle, was introduced." Through all of the many
kinds of ballet, they all tell a story in some way.
Watching a dance is just like reading a story or a book. "...so that by the time the whole story has
been told, even though it's already a well–known story, an audience may feel like they've never seen
it before. That's the real secret of telling a story in dance. Because of the myriad of moments and
textures that a dance can be made out of, it's like a new story every time it's told." (A Light in the

victims of the holocaust felt during the period of World War II (Remembrances Holocaust Ballet).
The Dance Dialogue says, "...most of our most popular ballets fall into the narrative ballet bracket,
in that they tell a story, but is the storyline conveyed through the actual ballet steps? Or is it through
the other dramatic devices that go to making up a 'Ballet'?" If someone thinks about it long enough,
they would realize that any motion or body movement helps enhance or add to a story being told.

motion seem like the most natural thing in the world." (A Light in the Dark,Reinking and

Ballet As Part Of The Romantic Era
The art form, Ballet emerged in Italy during the Renaissance (late 1400's) and was developed
throughout the world as history went on. Following its introduction to France, Ballet exploded and
became a very significant part of society; reaching its height in the late 1600's under the rule of King
Louis XIV who was a great patron of the arts and the founder of the Académie Royale de Danse.
There were many eras of Ballet such as Ballet de Court (1600's) and Ballet de action (1700's). The
19th Century in particular saw a significant development in Ballet as part of the Romantic Era.
Following the French Revolution (1789–1799) there was a new social enlightenment and
opportunity for people push boundaries, break social norms and challenge morals and ideas. This
massive shift in society saw the beginning of the Romantic era; a period in which writers, poets,
artists and dancers had the freedom to express themselves in a way that disregarded many classical
aspects of past which focused on harmony, balance and order. This provided a new era of creations
that had strong sources of inspirations from the natural world and mythology. (Vam.ac.uk) Much
like how we use theatre in present day as an escape from everyday life; many of the romantic art
forms acted as a 'return to nature' and the countryside that many people had left following the
establishment of more urban and industrial way of living. Ballet in particular was effected
significantly by this and there were numerous changes

Strength Training Is The Primary Component Of Injury...
Dance, as a sport, is often underestimated and due to its grace and fluidity, it is not taken seriously.
Grace, fluidity and flexibility are all essential for dancing at a professional level, however, as is
strength and agility, skills are often overlooked by the general population. As dance requires a high
level of physical fitness and skill, the impact of injury on a professional dancer's career can be
severe and can affect their ability to perform at a professional or even amateur level. Strength
training is the primary component of injury prevention.
BACKGROUND
Evidence suggests that dance originated from ancient rituals, spiritual gatherings and social events,
and the way dance has evolved throughout history greatly varies between different societies. This
lead to the modernisation of current styles, such as ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip–hop, tap, salsa
and the tango.
Jazz, hip–hop and tap dancing are genres that originated from African American vernacular dance,
whereas salsa and tango originated in the Caribbean and South America.
THE PHYSICS AND ANATOMY OF DANCE AND THE BODY
Injury is becoming more prevalent in dance due to the fact that dancers bodies are stressed beyond
their design limits. The competitive nature of dance has lead to younger and more talented
performers. The competitiveness of the field results in increased physical and mental pressure on
dancers to be better than their peers. Being 'better' equates to greater flexibility, balance and

My Daily Life That Changed My Life
Have you ever had a time in your life that changed you completely? Well, I have, and I'm going to
give you some information on how my daily life had changed and how it completely changed my
life. And that thing that had changed me the most in my life would have to be dance.
I fell in love with dance the first time I've stepped into a studio for the first time, with some pink,
shiny ballet shoes and when I was on the dance floor. When I started to dance, I was about four or
five years old. Ever since then, I've been doing dance for ten years in a row. My mom said, "now
you know why you spend so much of my money." And then I said, "well don't you like to see me
dance?" And she said, "yes."
Firstly, the studio that I started it was called "Dance Education Center" or "DEC" for short. I went to
this studio for six years. I loved all the teachers and my dance family/friends, but I thought it was
time to leave and move on to another place because when you get older like around seven or eight,
you had to take two ballet classes and one jazz class. Eventually, I was fine with taking the jazz
class because jazz is fun and exciting, but I was not very happy with taking two ballet classes in a
row. I despised ballet and hated it because it's so slow. After, I knew that you had to take two ballet
classes. . . a few years later I wanted to move on to another studio so my mom and I spent one year
looking online to try and find another studio. So, we found an awesome looking studio and I

Write An Essay About Dancing En Pointe
The Point Behind the Pointe
Nothing compares to that moment when a dance teacher gives permission for a dancer to purchase
their first pair of pointe shoes. The excitement builds, through the first fitting, up until the first

business, at all times there is a risk of injury, even at the professional level, one misplaced pose, or
one careless jump and their career is over.
In regards to the beginner student, should they be placed en pointe too young or before they have

Pointe is difficult, demanding, and painful. The dancer needs to be prepared to suffer from sore feet,

dancer must have a good work ethic and attitude towards their dance training, and dancing en

Analysis Of The Nutcracker Battle
The Nutcracker Battle
Everyone's favorite time of the year was approaching. It is finally December which means cold
weather, jingle bells, Christmas trees, and of course, Nutcracker season! All of the dancer's enrolled
in the Mississippi School of the Arts were thrilled to finally put on the tremendous production. They
could not wait to put on their tutus and pointe shoes and to spread the Christmas joy.
Ms. Tiffany, their strict but loving instructor, gathered the dancers around her to have a brief
meeting. She announced that every senior dancer was required to audition for a principal role of
their choice, and that she will announce the cast two weeks before the show. Ever since last year, the
dancers already knew which role they wanted, and practically already knew the choreography. They
quickly began to go over the choreography and rehearse for the upcoming audition.
Anna Beth has dreamed of dancing the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy ever since she tried on her
first pair of ballet slippers on. She was mesmerized by the tenderness of the Sugar Plum Fairy and
would rehearse for hours until she got it perfect. Her only competition was Ellen, her best friend.
The two girls helped each other with everything–especially dance. Even though Ellen was not as
experienced as Anna Beth, she had surpassed most of the peers in less than a year. She would also
do whatever it takes to get the role.
While rehearsing, the two girls kept exchanging looks, trying to outdo one another. If Anna Beth did
a double pirouette, Ellen would do a triple. If Ellen would hold a balance for three seconds, Anna
Beth would push herself to hold it for five seconds more. Instead of letting the intensity get to her,
Anna Beth viewed it as a healthy competition and took everything she could learn from it. Besides,
the two girls are best friends, whatever the result turned out to be, they would be happy for one
another, right?
The day of the audition quickly came. All the dancers were in the studio warming up, listening to
their music, and stretching. Anna Beth was a nervous wreck, sweating buckets just from the palms
of her hands. When Ms. Tiffany walked in, the dancers quickly stood up to greet her, and waited for
her instructions. Ms.

Research Paper On Anna Pavlova
How did a seven–year–old girl go from being a ballet enthusiast to one of the greatest ballerinas of
all time whose influences are still so evidently felt today? Anna Pavlova is a famous Russian
ballerina who is best known for introducing and popularizing ballet around the world, defying the
traditional expectations of ballerinas and her contribution to the modern pointe shoe. Her love for
classical ballet, determination, perseverance, and elegance stole the hearts of people around the
world.
At the age of eight Anna Pavlova, born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on 31 January 1881, was amazed
by the performance of The Sleeping Beauty at the Mariinsky Theater and was thereafter determined
on becoming a professional ballerina. Despite not having the ideal, strong, muscular and compact
figure of a ballerina at the time, Pavlova was accepted into the Imperial Ballet School in 1891.
Pavlova attracted the attention from her teachers and at the annual graduation performance in 1899,
it was announced that Pavlova, after graduating, would join the Imperial Ballet at the Mariinsky
Theatre. Pavlova, with her grace, talent and work ethic, rose through the ranks quickly, she was
named coryphée in 1902, première danseuse in 1905, and finally, after her extraordinary
performance in Giselle, she was promoted to prima ballerina in 1906.
With her strong stage presence, Pavlova stole the hearts of many across the world, who called

The Romantic Era
The Romantic Era was one of the most artistically influential eras in recent history. Artists were
fueled by their inner romantic and creative emotions rather than the more sinister tormented
geniuses of the past. Their works were full of drama, love and death. The performing arts in
particular were flourishing; ballet was truly taking off. The first pointe shoes were introduced in a
performance of La Sylphides, shorter tutus and partnering were becoming the norm. But in
particular, it was the era that brought about one of the most well known ballets of all time, 'Giselle.'
There are few eras with as distinct an artistic evolution as that of the Romantic Era. The style of this
time developed between 1775 and 1850. "Romanticism," as it was called, first came to be in
England and Germany: then it spread into post revolutionary France and North America. The
romantics preferred sentimental feelings to more somber reasons for creative genius. Although they
were exceptionally conservative in that era, the artists of the Romantic era created pieces that have
never been rivaled. The Romantic Era was a time of artistic abundance.
The invention of pointe work lead to dancers shortening their skirts, so as to better display the
footwork, and be more easily lifted by partners. This dress could have been considered scandalous
for the time, but it was accepted by the art form, as it truly allowed the dancers to develop. Although
the dancers of the Romantic Era were not as technically

Dance Program Application Essay

  • 1. Dance Program Application Essay I have been involved in multiple organizations throughout high school. In my freshman year, I joined the Art Club and was inducted into the National Art Honor Society at the end of the year for my involvement in the art program at Columbus High. I joined French Club at the beginning of sophomore year. I have been studying ballet for ten years, and have been a member of the Columbus Ballet company for three years. This includes corp de ballet and soloist roles in each production put on by the studio. I have been involved with the Christ Community Church youth ministry and their outreach programs for three years. Finally, I started attending CrossPointe Church youth group, starting at the beginning of this school year and have enjoyed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am also interested in continuing to dance after high school, so I believe GHP would be a wonderful way to get a glimpse into what it would be like to attend a dance program in college. I have attended several summer intensive programs in the past, and I have found value in being in an environment in which everyone has the same goal and is willing to sacrifice blood, sweat, and tears in order to achieve that goal. However, out–of–town intensives can become extremely expensive, so being able to attend GHP would be an incredible and beneficial opportunity to receive the training from an out–of town intensive without having to consider financial issues. Unlike many dancers today, I am a classically trained ballet dancer. I have been in ballet classes and performances consistently since age seven and en pointe since age twelve. Many dancers now have only received training in modern, jazz, or hip hop, so I believe that having a technical ballet background can be very advantageous for the study of other styles of dance. Ballet is known as the foundation for every form of dance, so having a strong ballet technique is vital, especially considering how hard it is to find in today's modern ... • 3. En Pointe Shoes: A Peep Into The Dance World A peep into the ballet world In order for a dancer to go en pointe a (s)he must develop a certain amount of muscles that include, core muscles, leg muscles, lower back, and ankles. If a dancer goes en pointe without building those muscles it could really damage his or hers feet. On the bright side there are many very interesting things about ballet and pointe shoes. While en pointe or dancing in general the body muscles must be in use which consist of closed ribs, pulling up under belly button, turn hips out, ankles being turned out, lastly push tail bone down. While en pointe and or just dancing without being en pointe do all those things plus balance body weight and breath. While 65% of dancers go en pointe at an early age as a result ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While dancing especially ballet there are a number of things that need to be done to make it look so easy. First pull up underneath the belly button, ribs should be closed like (s)he has on a corset, shoulders should be down, the neck is extended while the chin is also up, chest is out with confidence, hips should be rotating back the whole time to maintain that turnout, turnout the ankles too, tail bone is down , and only natural arch in back. Just have fun and dance with confidence, grace, and beauty. There are many different positions in the ballet world but for now here are the basic one's. First position of the feet is when the heels are touching while the hips were rotated and turned out. Second position is like first except the feet are spread apart but still turned out. Third position, is where the arch of the foot is next to the heel of the foot and always turned out meaning the feet are going different ways. Second to last is fifth position is like heel toe, heel toe for example the heel of the right foot is in front of the heel of the left foot and the same for the other foot. Lastly sixth position, the heels are touching and the toes are touching but this time the feet are turned in. The language ballet is spoken is French because ballet started in France. • 5. My First Dance Research Paper "But I don't want to go!" I remember screaming as my mom put my new ballet shoes on my feet; and I guess my first grade self didn't make a reasonable enough argument because there I was at my first dance lesson. I peeked nervously into the dance studio and saw girls much older than I moving their arms gracefully with the music as they lifted their legs into an attitude. I remember noticing that their shoes were different than mine, still the pretty pink color that I loved so much, but they were standing on them. They had lacey ribbons tied all the way up their calves and beautiful material surrounded the shoes. Another first grader next to me was quick to boast that she knew what they were called, they were called pointe shoes and as I continued ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Summary Of Life In Motion By Misty Copeland Have you ever thought what it would be like to be dancing up on your toes with the American Ballet theatre (ABT)? That's just what happened, Misty Copeland currently a principal dancer at ABT had a dream to dance there ever since she started to dance and she didn't think that she could do it,but with training, hard work, and passion you can achieve anything. For the month of September I decided to read "Life in Motion" written by Misty Copeland. This book was very inspiring in many ways. I learned so much that I didn't know, not only about Misty Copeland but also about ballet. I decided to read this book because, Misty Copeland is one of my idols, she is also a big inspiration and I really wanted to learn more about her. Overall this book was amazing. I would recommend it to not only ballet dancers but to also people who love non–fiction because it is full of so many details and a lot of imagery that it makes a person feel like they are in her shoes dancing through her life. I would recommend this book because many people can relate to Misty Copeland in many ways, your mind wanders while reading, and because the plot was very unbelievable and surprising. Imagine reading a book about your idol and thinking wow I really feel like I am a part of their life. That's just what happened, while I was reading "Life in Motion," I could actually feel and relate to what was happening to Misty Copeland. • 9. My Dance Research Paper Three things that reflect or describe me include shoes, the studio, and family. I am a dancer and almost everyday of every week I am at the studio practicing for those three to four minutes I will have on the Tulsa Performing Arts Center's stage in May. Being a dancer, I have many different types of shoes and many pairs for each type; I have pointe shoes, or toe shoes, jazz shoes, pirouettes, soft ballet shoes, foot undies, etc. I learned the hard way to always have a backup pair. Two or three years ago in the middle of third recital I was running up and down the halls of the dressing rooms down in the basement looking for my jazz shoes. My dance was on in ten minutes. I ran up the two flights of stairs to the tiny quick change room backstage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But despite losing many dancers throughout the years we have grown closer every year and my senior year I know leaving Miss Shelly's will be harder Bishop Kelley. I have too many memories inside all three studios and on the pink and white checkered floors. I am now teaching as an assistant at Miss Shelly's hoping that the little girls in my classes grow to love not only dance but the studio as much as I do and they find their own dance family. Many of the teachers' children dance at Miss Shelly's. There is even one family who has three generations dancing there right now. The Miss Shelly's family and community is filled with the most loving, accepting, and positive people around and they inspire me to be a better person. Some ways I try to do this is by helping every Saturday after my class with the special needs class or by in the summers going to the Little Light House with Miss Shelly and a few others and teaching them dances. • 11. Giselle Gender Roles Ballet is not only a well–known art form with a language that is nearly universal, but also involves a combination of several elements, including dancers, music, and scenery; commonly performed in pointe shoes, the movements are very fluid and graceful. The very first era of ballet is referred to as the romantic period, during which famous ballets with lengthy, complicated story plots such as Giselle took place. A young woman named Giselle falls in love with a male character named Albrecht and marries him; only to die of a broken heart when a third character comes in. His name is Hilarion, and he is also in love with Giselle; he reveals that apparently Albrecht has deceived her. After an extreme reaction, Giselle is seen as a virgin spirit dancing with a group of other undead young women who died of a broken heart. Albrecht and Hilarion visit the grave, only to be danced to death. Giselle's spirit decides to forgive Albrecht and save his life in the end. This is only one of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Butler article it states, "the relation between the culture and nature presupposed by some models of gender 'construction' implies a culture and agency of the social which acts upon a nature, which itself presupposed as a passive surface, outside the social and yet its necessary counterpart." The setting of Giselle shows us that she isn't the most fortunate but she is happy. On the other hand, you have Albrecht who is a nobleman that chose to deny his culture and act as peasant to get close to Giselle. His instinct placed a constructed view on his gender as a male that in turn gave his character a social meaning some depth. Giselle's spirit after she died could have helped the other virgin spirits and allow Albrecht to die. But her characters cultural ideas and her view on life saved his life. • 13. Misconceptions About Dance In Dancing Around The Truth Dancing Around the Truth: Misconceptions About Dance It's seven o'clock on a Friday night as the curtains begin to rise and the lights begin to dim in the now darkened theatre. Stage lights stream to the front of the room as rows of girls dressed in blush tutus with hair slicked back perfectly into a bun, shuffle onto the stage in what observers call "toe shoes". As they begin to dance, the very thought of how simple it is made to look and how it cannot be that difficult to copy what the beautiful, ballerinas are doing float through the heads of the audience. However, pun intended, isn't that the "pointe" of dance? The lifestyle of a dancer is often pre–judged under the misconceptions that dance is easy to do, slightly boring to watch, and not considered a sport. Dance is believed to be breathtaking but at the same time yielding so much power through the movement of the body. As Stephanie Merry expressed in her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Contrary to the argument ad populum, dancers are determined, artists, performers, actors and actresses, dreamers, goal–reachers, and most importantly passionate. Without passion there is no soul, and without soul there can be no dance. Ruth Denis embodies an incredible view of dance when she says, "I see dance being used as communication between body and soul, to express what it too deep to find for words". The meaning behind a dance has to be found through the connection between the body and the music and once it is found it opens a beautiful and sometimes heartfelt experience that cannot be experienced the same way again. It is visible music to the eyes while pleasing both the heart and mind as well. The emotions felt when dancing are best drawn out by Albert Einstein when said, "We dance for laughter, we dance for tears, we dance for madness, we dance for fears, we dance for hopes, we dance for screams, we are the dancers, we create the dreams". • 15. Analysis Of The Hard Nut By Mark Morris It is incredibly hard to take a classic, a piece known by thousands, recognizable by the first few notes of music, and change a single thing without inducing wrath. The Hard Nut by Mark Morris is a contemporary dance piece choreographed in the early 1990s. It is a piece based off of the Nutcracker, following a slightly altered story, though keeping the original music and much of the original concept. The dance focused on will be The Waltz of the Snowflakes. This dance, in particular, reflects concepts of beauty beyond gender, while also reflecting how the concepts of gender were challenged during the time period that this was originally choreographed and performed in, reflected through both the choreography and the set. The Hard Nut is a stunning piece of contemporary ballet alters the original concepts of the Nutcracker while still honoring the original. The modernized version is meant to take place in possibly 1960s or 1970s, opposed to the Victorian Era most use, but the setting isn't the only thing that is modernized in this piece. The Waltz of the Snowflakes is a fan favorite of the original Nutcracker, where the snowflakes, donned in beautiful white tutus, dance around Clara and the prince, creating a stunning winter scene. The original and the modernized version do have the costuming in common, which wouldn't be surprising was it not for the dancers involved. While the Waltz of the Snowflakes is traditionally a rather feminine piece, Mark Morris chose here to use the entire ensemble, regardless of gender, in the dance, all of whom wore the same white tutu costumes with headpieces that further hid their gender and sex. Additionally, the choreography in the dance, unlike most ballet pieces, is not separated by gender. Each dancer dances the same choreography regardless of their sex or gender. The choice of contemporary ballet is perfect for the message and concepts behind the piece, taking a story, or long held dance rules, and bending them to modern times while still protecting the integrity of the original piece or style. The lack of separation in this piece is a stunning reflection of the concept that gender or sex has no correlation with beauty. The choreography in this piece is gorgeous, even ... • 19. Dancing En Pointe : An Art Form That Began Dancing en pointe is an art form that began as an extension from classical ballet many decades ago. Dancing en pointe is when a ballet dancer, usually a female dancer, rises onto the tips of her toes with fully extended feet; rising onto her toes while wearing special pointe shoes gives the illusion of floating and being weightless. Pointe shoes became popular after Charles Didelot created something called the "Flying Machine," this lifted dancers upward, allowing them to stand on the tips of their toes before leaving the ground. Choreographers loved the look of the lightness that the flying machine created that they began to look for ways to incorporate more pointe work into their dances. Many things in the history of the dance world are uncertain, but it is believed that Marie Taglioni was the first ballerina to dance en pointe without any sort of contraption. When Marie did first dance an entire routine en pointe, she had nothing more than modified satin slippers, meaning that she was literally on the tips of her toes with no support. Dancers during this phase would pad their toes for comfort and depend on their feet and ankle strength for support. The next phase of pointe shoes, which was substantially different than what Marie Taglioni used, had a modified toe area; instead of a more pointed shape, the toe areas were given a sturdy, flat shape to allow dancers to more easily get on top of their toes. This is when ballet academies could start pushing technique en ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Romantic Ballet The theatre is full of young men and women. The gas lanterns dimly light the room and the silhouette of a figure can be seen in the shadows of the stage. As she emerges, she is like a dream: a tall, elegant body with a form fitting bodice and tutu. She is entrancing on her tiny pointe shoes as she floats across the stage. Love and passion fill the air as she moves in such a way that is almost magical. The Romantic Ballet Period introduced the aspects of theme, costume, and new technique to the dance world and its influences are still seen in contemporary works in ballet. Ballet has been an art form since the late fifteenth century, but society did not truly see the impact of ballet until the nineteenth century. Modern day thinkers ... Rooted from Neoclassicism, Romanticism revolted against the rigid forms of classic works (Clark and Crisp). It was essentially a literary movement and influenced almost all movements of art. The romantics sought out for a way to break free from their classical ancestors and achieved a great accomplishment than anyone had ever thought possible. In a span of two decades, ballet was transformed becoming a major theatre art and gaining the acceptance from its viewers (Guest). The Romantic Ballet period was an international movement spreading from Paris to New York (Garafola "Rethinking..."). Although it can be seen throughout many cultures, it remained predominantly in Paris, where it began. The stage was the ballerina's focal point. The Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique or Paris Opéra first introduced the prospects that Romantic ballet could provide. In fact, it proved to do much better than critics had once thought. Ballet once being subservient to the Opéra was now its own theatre art. Before the Romantic period, dancing and singing were performed together. It was only until the development of the ballet d´action that ballet could be performed separately from opera. • 25. Descriptive Essay About Dance "Now hold it." Those are the worst words a ballet instructor can say. I stood on my tiptoes, hands above my head, trying to hold my uncomfortable pose. There were about twelve other girls in my class filling up the wide dance room. There were mirrors on every wall making sure that you would be able to see your every move. We all wore pink, fluffy tutus with black leotards underneath and pale pink ballet slippers. I could feel my legs start to shake as I struggled to hold the pose our ballet instructor had ordered us to do but soon I was on the ground. I could feel all the other girls start to look at me and my cheeks started to turn red from embarrassment. I kept my head down and started to get up when I heard the loud tap of some black high heels. The shoes reached to where I was lying and I looked up to my very annoyed looking teacher, Ms. Freel, or better known to the parents and older ballerinas as Jenny. Ironically, we had the same name but we were completely different people. On the first day of classes she made it clear that we must call her Ms.Freel and only Ms.Freel. Ms. Freel was an old, stern looking woman who only wore her hair in a slicked back bun. She wore the same black dress that reached her ankles and black tights underneath.I never understood why she would be liked by anyone from how scary she seemed. Yet, the older more experienced ballerinas adored her and the new ballerinas were absolutely afraid of her. Afraid is what I felt when I looked at how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Elements Of Giselle Raising the Barre As one of the few ballets that has been performed continuously for centuries, Giselle has become one of the most renowned ballets of all time. Giselle was conceived in 1841 by Gautier specifically for the famous ballerina of the Paris Opera Ballet, Carlotta Grisi. This ballet was a product of the thriving creativity of the 19th century. The classic story tells of a young girl, Giselle, who has caught the eye of two men. As the ballet progresses, Giselle falls in love with one of the men, only to have her heart broken. Because she is weak in health, Giselle dies of heart break and is to become one of the Wilis, a clan of ghostly women who haunt men from beyond their graves. It is obvious that Giselle is from the Romantic era because of the many identifying elements that connect it to Romanticism as well as the historical influences and gender roles that are reflected in the ballet's story. Many elements most commonly associated with Giselle include white romantic tutus, the daunting Wilis, or light, captivating gracefulness of the dancing. This particular ballet has always been easy to identify because of the specific qualities it possesses. Watching Giselle, audiences are always drawn to the charming, gentle nature of Giselle, despite how technically difficult the steps are. In her famous variation from the first act, Giselle completes thirty ballonnés en pointe with great ease. Furthermore, the eery synchronicity and solemn countenance of the Wilis is ... They are way more complex than what we tend to think and throughout this essay we will go over their creation, how they're structured, and how they impacted ballet. In the early 1700s, the technique of ballet developed rapidly and incorporated a new emphasis on graceful foot technique. In 1726, Marie Camargo debuted at the Paris Opéra Ballet in a performance of Les Caractères de la Danse, dancing in slippers instead of heeled shoes. She had also shortened her stage skirt to show off the turnout of her legs and feet as well as her bas de jambe during entrechats. A wide range of designs were on the market: from soft block shoes, which are designed for transition from soft shoes to pointe shoes, to extremely hard shoes, which give extra strength, to machine–manufactured rehearsal pointes for dance students operating on a smaller budget. About thirty–five ballet shoe manufacturers, such as Freed, Grishko, Bloch, Capezio, and Gaynor Minden operate in the market. At the end of the twentieth century, the fashion industry picked up the idea of ribbons and look–alike pointe shoes, and designer brands such as Manolo Blahnik, Sonia Rykiel, Etro, and Blumarine have used the pointe shoe style to create "ballerina" fashion shoes. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, an increasingly challenging ballet technique, en demi pointe, allowed dancers to carry out multiple pirouettes and jumps. While men were identified as playing a secondary role in the performance, from this point onward ballerinas rose to the toes and contributed to a new dance aesthetic. This overt emphasis on the lightness of dancers was reflected by Marie Taglioni, who appeared sur les pointes in the first performance of La Sylphide in 1832. • 43. Giselle And The Romantic Era The romantic era had begun in the early 19th century and was the most innovative era for the ballet. Known for the reflection of art and literature, the romantic era was the time of fantasy, etherealism and supernaturalism. Female dancers became the superstars of the ballet especially with the introduction of pointe work, the iconic romantic tutu and themes of a love that could never be. On a softly lit stage lights flickered over ghostly forms. Throughout the romantic era many innovative features were introduced such as gas lighting, trap doors and fly wires. Gas lighting was used as the transition light from sunshine to moonlight for the ballet acts. Gas lighting created a mood to tell the story of a love that was destined to fail, especially in Giselle. The dark light of the second act filtered across the willis as they haunted the graveyard. Trap doors and fly wires were innovative as it gave the effect of the ballerina's disappearing and flying through the air delicately. • 57. Ballet As Part Of The Romantic Era The art form, Ballet emerged in Italy during the Renaissance (late 1400's) and was developed throughout the world as history went on. Following its introduction to France, Ballet exploded and became a very significant part of society; reaching its height in the late 1600's under the rule of King Louis XIV who was a great patron of the arts and the founder of the Académie Royale de Danse. There were many eras of Ballet such as Ballet de Court (1600's) and Ballet de action (1700's). The 19th Century in particular saw a significant development in Ballet as part of the Romantic Era. Following the French Revolution (1789–1799) there was a new social enlightenment and opportunity for people push boundaries, break social norms and challenge morals and ideas. This massive shift in society saw the beginning of the Romantic era; a period in which writers, poets, artists and dancers had the freedom to express themselves in a way that disregarded many classical aspects of past which focused on harmony, balance and order. This provided a new era of creations that had strong sources of inspirations from the natural world and mythology. (Vam.ac.uk) Much like how we use theatre in present day as an escape from everyday life; many of the romantic art forms acted as a 'return to nature' and the countryside that many people had left following the establishment of more urban and industrial way of living. The teacher, Miss Kennedy, had the girls do a warm–up, which consisted of push– ups, jumping jacks, crunches, and other cardio. After everyone finished, the girls were allowed to get a drink. It wasn't a long drink break, because there was a great deal of work to do. Rachel got a solo in a dance they were working on. The class, even though it was only an hour long, felt like hours. The girls were dismissed for rehearsal, which was in a few minutes. Rachel and her friends got their pointe shoes on and grabbed their skirts. Slowly, everyone got into rehearsal. It took ten minutes for everyone to come into the studio. After a pep talk from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Strength Training Is The Primary Component Of Injury... Dance, as a sport, is often underestimated and due to its grace and fluidity, it is not taken seriously. Grace, fluidity and flexibility are all essential for dancing at a professional level, however, as is strength and agility, skills are often overlooked by the general population. As dance requires a high level of physical fitness and skill, the impact of injury on a professional dancer's career can be severe and can affect their ability to perform at a professional or even amateur level. Strength training is the primary component of injury prevention. BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that dance originated from ancient rituals, spiritual gatherings and social events, and the way dance has evolved throughout history greatly varies between different societies. This lead to the modernisation of current styles, such as ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip–hop, tap, salsa and the tango. Jazz, hip–hop and tap dancing are genres that originated from African American vernacular dance, whereas salsa and tango originated in the Caribbean and South America. THE PHYSICS AND ANATOMY OF DANCE AND THE BODY Injury is becoming more prevalent in dance due to the fact that dancers bodies are stressed beyond their design limits. The competitive nature of dance has lead to younger and more talented performers. The competitiveness of the field results in increased physical and mental pressure on dancers to be better than their peers. Being 'better' equates to greater flexibility, balance and ... • 63. Grantleigh'sdream Production Report Grantleigh's production of #aMidsummerNight'sDream was a great success. The matric students needed to choose a project to form part of this production. I have gained so much experience through my project and I am so glad to have been a part of such a wonderful play. I chose the project of the role of head of Titania's handmaidens or fairies. The role consisted mainly of the choreography of all the ballet dances, namely Entr'acte, A Midsummer Night's Waltz and Minuet, which was a pointe dance. I was responsible for organising my group of fairies and the communication between them and the director, Mrs Wang. I also had a small speaking role. I feel that my project was successful. Nothing is ever perfect, and some things did go wrong. Our beautiful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a ballet dancer, I had the ability to choreograph the three dances and to teach all of the girls, to correct their technique and help them with it. As a leader, I was able to keep them focussed and motivated. My downfall would be that I stressed too much and that I got frustrated when things did not go as planned. It was at times mentally draining, but my passion for dancing and performing outweighed that. The project involved hard work and large responsibility, however, I adored the challenge that it presented. I love helping others, and working together to achieve a common goal. I was very pleased with the final product because I achieved what I set out to do. The dancing was beautiful, we created an entertaining performance for the audience, all the girls enjoyed themselves and it was a very exciting experience for all of us. Overall the production was a grand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. My Daily Life That Changed My Life Have you ever had a time in your life that changed you completely? Well, I have, and I'm going to give you some information on how my daily life had changed and how it completely changed my life. And that thing that had changed me the most in my life would have to be dance. I fell in love with dance the first time I've stepped into a studio for the first time, with some pink, shiny ballet shoes and when I was on the dance floor. When I started to dance, I was about four or five years old. Ever since then, I've been doing dance for ten years in a row. My mom said, "now you know why you spend so much of my money." And then I said, "well don't you like to see me dance?" And she said, "yes." Firstly, the studio that I started it was called "Dance Education Center" or "DEC" for short. I went to this studio for six years. I loved all the teachers and my dance family/friends, but I thought it was time to leave and move on to another place because when you get older like around seven or eight, you had to take two ballet classes and one jazz class. Eventually, I was fine with taking the jazz class because jazz is fun and exciting, but I was not very happy with taking two ballet classes in a row. I despised ballet and hated it because it's so slow. After, I knew that you had to take two ballet classes. . . a few years later I wanted to move on to another studio so my mom and I spent one year looking online to try and find another studio. So, we found an awesome looking studio and I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Descriptive Essay: My First Jazz Concert You'd think that after more than 11 concerts the adrenaline of being on stage would have died down a bit. It hasn't. I've danced since I was 3 and every time I go onstage the rush is the same. Concert has always been the biggest event in May. I love it almost as much as the last day of school. Concert 2016 was my favorite out of all the years that I've danced. I wake up and immediately start getting ready for concert. Getting ready consists of my mom trying to do a dutch braid while I do my concert makeup. I hear my mom let out a frustrated sigh because the braid won't stay in. She's tried about 30 million times. She has sprayed so much hairspray that it's strangling me in the small room. I stop her and just say I'll do it backstage. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Our Jazz dance goes by too fast. My group finishes our part of the dance and walk off stage while the other group finishes their part. As soon as I get past the wings of the stage, I start taking off my jazz costume, this is the fastest quick change that I had ever done. People are waiting by my stuff ready to help me. My tights are waiting, all scrunched up so that I can slip into them fast and Rachel is holding my pink costume. It's dark backstage so I have to squint to see the my stuff. I'm panting like a dog after the jazz routine and backstage feels like it's a hundred degrees. I drop to the ground to tie my pointes. I reach out and feel the silk on my pointe shoe. Everything's in slow motion as I panic to finish my quick change. An older dancer shows up and starts helping me put on my pointes because the other people helping me don't know how. I hear the music end and realize there is only one dance and it's the 3 year olds. That means I have 1 minute. I tie my pointes shoes the fastest I have ever tied them, the adrenaline kicking in. It feels like I've taken a hundred years to tie a single pointe shoe. I jump up and run to the wing where we enter. I see the other people in my pointe dance finishing their quick change. The music starts to fade out from the 3 year olds and the bright lights fade off. We run on as silently as we can in pointe shoes and get in starting position. The lights turn on and the instrumental version of "Stairway To Heaven" starts playing. We danced our hearts out in those few minutes. When we finish the dance it's like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Then comes hip–hop and then bows. My age group bows and we dance dance back clapping to the beat. More age groups come on, the carefree music cheering. The teachers come on and we cheer along with the crowd, our cheers silencing out the music and the curtains close. Then the concert was over. We had finished ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Write An Essay About Dancing En Pointe The Point Behind the Pointe Nothing compares to that moment when a dance teacher gives permission for a dancer to purchase their first pair of pointe shoes. The excitement builds, through the first fitting, up until the first pointe class. There is an unseen evil lurking behind this happiness. Dancing en pointe is a dangerous business, at all times there is a risk of injury, even at the professional level, one misplaced pose, or one careless jump and their career is over. In regards to the beginner student, should they be placed en pointe too young or before they have sufficient strength, and technique, their career may be over before it begins. The majority of dancers are ready to begin dancing en pointe between the ages of ten and twelve, but occasionally, an exceptionally strong nine–year–old will be able to advance to the higher levels. The dancer needs to be prepared to suffer from sore feet, pain, and blisters. The shoes themselves also demand a great level of responsibility to maintain. The student must be able to put them on correctly, and tie them to the ankles in the correct fashion . The dancer must have a good work ethic and attitude towards their dance training, and dancing en pointe. Focus and dedication is required throughout classes. Their studio etiquette is a good signal for this; whether they come to class in the appropriate attire, whether they come prepared, whether they apply corrections, and finally whether they show correct and appropriate class behaviour . To maintain the required strength for pointe work, it takes discipline, and it cannot be maintained with classes alone. • 73. Analysis Of The Nutcracker Battle The Nutcracker Battle Everyone's favorite time of the year was approaching. It is finally December which means cold weather, jingle bells, Christmas trees, and of course, Nutcracker season! All of the dancer's enrolled in the Mississippi School of the Arts were thrilled to finally put on the tremendous production. They could not wait to put on their tutus and pointe shoes and to spread the Christmas joy. Ms. Tiffany, their strict but loving instructor, gathered the dancers around her to have a brief meeting. She announced that every senior dancer was required to audition for a principal role of their choice, and that she will announce the cast two weeks before the show. Ever since last year, the dancers already knew which role they wanted, and practically already knew the choreography. They quickly began to go over the choreography and rehearse for the upcoming audition. Anna Beth has dreamed of dancing the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy ever since she tried on her first pair of ballet slippers on. She was mesmerized by the tenderness of the Sugar Plum Fairy and would rehearse for hours until she got it perfect. Her only competition was Ellen, her best friend. The two girls helped each other with everything–especially dance. Even though Ellen was not as experienced as Anna Beth, she had surpassed most of the peers in less than a year. She would also do whatever it takes to get the role. While rehearsing, the two girls kept exchanging looks, trying to outdo one another. If Anna Beth did a double pirouette, Ellen would do a triple. If Ellen would hold a balance for three seconds, Anna Beth would push herself to hold it for five seconds more. Instead of letting the intensity get to her, Anna Beth viewed it as a healthy competition and took everything she could learn from it. Besides, the two girls are best friends, whatever the result turned out to be, they would be happy for one another, right? The day of the audition quickly came. All the dancers were in the studio warming up, listening to their music, and stretching. Anna Beth was a nervous wreck, sweating buckets just from the palms of her hands. When Ms. Tiffany walked in, the dancers quickly stood up to greet her, and waited for her instructions. Ms. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. The Romantic Era The Romantic Era was one of the most artistically influential eras in recent history. Artists were fueled by their inner romantic and creative emotions rather than the more sinister tormented geniuses of the past. Their works were full of drama, love and death. The performing arts in particular were flourishing; ballet was truly taking off. The first pointe shoes were introduced in a performance of La Sylphides, shorter tutus and partnering were becoming the norm. But in particular, it was the era that brought about one of the most well known ballets of all time, 'Giselle.' There are few eras with as distinct an artistic evolution as that of the Romantic Era. The style of this time developed between 1775 and 1850. "Romanticism," as it was called, first came to be in England and Germany: then it spread into post revolutionary France and North America. The romantics preferred sentimental feelings to more somber reasons for creative genius. Although they were exceptionally conservative in that era, the artists of the Romantic era created pieces that have never been rivaled. The Romantic Era was a time of artistic abundance. The invention of pointe work lead to dancers shortening their skirts, so as to better display the footwork, and be more easily lifted by partners. This dress could have been considered scandalous for the time, but it was accepted by the art form, as it truly allowed the dancers to develop.
