Karl von Frisch discovered that honey bees use precise dances to communicate the location of food sources to other bees. He observed two types of dances - a round dance for nearby sources less than 50 meters away without directional information, and a waggle dance for more distant sources over 50 meters. The waggle dance provides the direction to the food source through the angle of the dancer's waggling run relative to gravity, as well as the distance through the number of waggles and dance tempo. The duration of the waggle dance indicates the quality of the food source.
