Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a French painter and a leading Impressionist artist. He was born in Limoges, France and studied art in Paris. Renoir helped establish Impressionism in the 1860s-1870s by painting scenes of modern life with loose brushwork and vibrant colors. He exhibited with Monet, Sisley, and other Impressionists. Though he struggled with recognition early in his career, Renoir found success after meeting a publisher in the late 1870s. He continued painting, even as arthritis limited his mobility in old age. Renoir is remembered as one of the founders of Impressionism.
