The percentage of individuals in the United States and NH with past year illicit drug dependence or abuse was highest among young adults between the ages of 18-25. A rapid assessment process was used to do a deeper dive to understand the substance use behaviors of young adults. And to ensure prevention strategies are culturally sensitive and relevant to the target populations, to help inform prevention efforts for early childhood and youth, and to establish baseline data to track implemented prevention efforts.
Themes: Community, physical environment, job opportunities and growth, communication approaches, generational differences, sense of hope or optimism, stress coping mechanisms, perception of substance misuse, consequences of substance misuse, and substance use

Now what? Next steps:
1. The Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Services put out an RFP and will fund 11 of the 13 Regional Public Health Networks to implement young adult strategies (SBIRT; Employers; Peer leadership programs).
2. NAMI to adapt “Connect”, a youth-based suicide prevention train-the-trainer program: “Connect for Young Adults” (MH; suicide; AOD).
3. Develop and roll out a young adult social media campaign with a focus on binge drinking.
4. Second administration of the young adult assessment is being planned for 2019 which will provide important comparison data and indicate if the trends are moving in the right direction.

Fearful for his future. Will he grow up to be independent and will someone love him Fear for the siblings. Acceptance- It’s going to be ok. You will ebb and flow between these stages for a long time and that is normal.
- You must be positive and have faith and vision that everything will be alright.
- Important to get an echocardiogram for your newborn.
- Weather it is a Dr. or a therapist you need to follow your gut. Someone who is on your side , it can make or break your success with your child.
- First year of life is critical time in a child development. During those years early years they achieve the basic physical, cognitive, Language, social and self-help skills that lay the foundation for future progress. Children with Down Syndrome typically face delays in certain areas of development so early intervention is very important. What is it? Is a systematic program of therapy, exercises and activities designed to address developmental delays . These services are mandated by a federal law called the IDEA. The law requires the states to provide services to all children that qualify with the goal to enhancing the development of infants and toddlers and helping families understand and meet the needs of their children. The most common EI services for babies with Down Syndrome is PT, SPL, OT When should it start, shortly after birth then until the child enters or is eligible for kindergarten,.
- Development is a continues process that starts at conception and proceeds step by step. We need to look like building a house. You need to have a foundation before you even can begin to put the walls up. We want it to be strong. 4 areas of deveolpment they are all needed to bulid the rest of the house!
- PT- focuses on motor development. Head control , pulling to a sitting position, crawling and walking. DS have low muslce tone . The ability to explore there envirornment is very important skill to learning. SPL- critical. Even though a child with DS wont say words until 2 or 3 yrs. There is so much to pre-speech and pre-language that has to be acquired first. Echo, turn tking, auditory skills, orl motor skills even breast feeding. OT. –fine motor sjills to develop independence. Opening and closing things buttoning , picking things up, ect.
