This document summarizes and compares several citation tools and databases and how accurately they generate citations in APA style. It finds that while citation tools and databases can generate citations with around 90% accuracy, they all make some errors in areas like capitalization, inclusion of issue numbers, and DOI formatting unless the user knows how to edit the record to fix it. Examples are provided of citations generated by databases like EbscoHost ERIC, InfoTrac Academic OneFile, and ProQuest as well as tools like EndNote, Mendeley, and Google Scholar to show common errors. The conclusion is that the citation generators get reasonably close but not perfectly correct without human editing based on style guidelines.
