Vitamin B12, also known as cyanocobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin isolated in crystalline form in 1948. It was shown to be effective in treating pernicious anemia, a disease caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. Good dietary sources of vitamin B12 include animal products like meat, fish, eggs, milk and cheese, as the vitamin is not found in plants. While the daily requirement is small at under 1 mg, excessively high doses have been linked to acne, worsening of kidney function in diabetics, and increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
