About your hosts, David &
Philip
A great lineup of presenters
Allow us to set the context for
the day…
The World Is Changing Rapidly
In this changing world, it’s hard
to compete
We are fortunate to work with client
organizations, both leading
Associations and Charities…
…across 25 countries and 6
continents…
… and we see a theme in the
best: they become “learning
organizations”
They use data created by their
internal and external relationships to
improve performance
You’ll hear about Engagement, and why we believe
measuring engagement is crucial for success in
today’s fundraising and membership environment
You’ll also hear about Performance
Improvement throughout the day, and Cathi
will provide our lunch keynote on this topic
Global Survey Results
Last month ASI conducted a survey and received

tools
3. Total annual system
costs
1. Inadequate
online/mobile
fundraising capability
2. Inability to measure
donor engagement

and website
CxOs need vision across the
organization. Traditionally
“data silos” prevented this
Many organizations are
frustrated by multiple systems
The era of CRM is
over.
In summary, leading organizations:
• Harness data for performance improvement
• Measure engagement
• Eliminate silos of knowledge
• Drive technology from strategy, which comes
from the top
Engagement used to be a lot more simple…

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Can everyone take their seats? We’re going to go ahead and get started
  • #3 Good morning! I’m David Riffle, and I’m joined on stage with my co-host Philip King. And welcome to our first CxO Summit on Performance Improvement. We’re both very excited to be here with you today. I want to personally thank you for taking time out of your schedules to be here with us, and in return, we’re going to deliver a series of presentations that you will not only learn from, but be inspired by to get some great ideas on performance improvement and engagement. I’m sure performance improvement and engagement, mean something different to everyone in this room. How do you measure engagement and how does that translate into performance improvement? Philip, can you give us an overview of the day?
  • #5 About David: About Philip: Philip is the Founder of The Donation Funnel Project: an experiment in mobile fundraising. He has always been interested in how fundraisers can use the Internet to find new donors and dollars. He was the VP of eBusiness for United Way of Greater Toronto, and was the President & CEO of Artez Interactive for a decade. Growing up in Tennessee, he had the fortune to have a dinner with Johnny and June Carter Cash.
  • #6 Can we cut out my and Philip’s pictures?
  • #13 The changes that Philip just illustrated, particularly the one of the Pope’s (installment??), are astounding. That was only 8 years! How do you compete when the world is changing so quickly? Well, today you’re going to hear how other not-for-profits are doing this! In a book called “Race for Relevance – 5 Radical Changes for Associations,” the authors state that not for profits must redefine their approach to technology! Technology must become an integral component of the organizations function and performance. To make this happen the message must be spread beyond the IT, Membership and Development departments.  Leadership in every organization needs to be engaged and the messages you hear today are messages that need to be repeated to CEOs and COOs in every Not For profit Organization. I recently sat in on a webcast sponsored by ASAE on how to select association software. And there was no discussion on tying business strategy to drive technology decision making. None. It was coming from a viewpoint that’s 10 years old, and before mobile took over the world. Our most successful clients make sure their business strategy drives their technology decision making, and not the other way around.
  • #14 We are fortunate to work with client organizations, both leading Associations and Charities…So this gives us a unique perspective on both sides of the fence..
  • #15 We work with organizations that span 25 countries and 6 continents
  • #16 … and we see a theme in the best: they become “learning organizations” Is your organization a learning organization? What does that mean and, if you’re not, how do you become one?
  • #17 The leading groups that we work with, and see, use data created by their internal and external relationships to improve performance…this requires technology platforms that support their strategic vision. And the strategic vision is the responsibility of the CEO, and their executive team.
  • #18 Learning organizations measure the most important aspects of their business, and one of the most important ones is Engagement. We believe measuring engagement is crucial for success in today’s fundraising and membership environment.
  • #19 And measuring engagement, leads to performance improvement. Cathi Hight is our keynote speaker today, and after you hear the though leadership presentations during the break-out sessions, Cathi’s going to tie it all together for you, in her presentation on remaining relevant. So what are executives in our industry focusing on in today’s environment? Philip’s going to share with you the results of a global survey we just completed.
  • #22 David reads membership, Philip reads fundraising
  • #23 David reads membership, Philip reads fundraising
  • #24 How do you get there? Technology is a huge piece of this puzzle, and CEOs need a vision across the entire organization. And in our global survey, nearly 70% of the executives that responded, lived in an environment of data silos that prevent them from seeing across the entire organization. Let me show you a picture to help illustrate this.
  • #25 You live in a world that has accepted, as a way of life, the maintenance and integration of multiple systems and suppliers that create highly expensive solutions. One of the industry consultants we work actively monitors 52 AMS products for his clients. 52! How do you make a decision in an environment like that, especially Some of the biggest challenges that executives had were the high cost of system solutions, inadequate reporting tools and inadequate integration between their database system and their website Guess what? Here’s why! You have multiple systems that you are supporting (cover the picture), the most expensive piece of this environment are the costs associated with maintaining all the integrations. You have to pay someone everytime one of these solutions changes, and I bet the integrations break all the time, and you have to keep paying someone to fix that. Reporting? How do you report across 5 and more systems? You have to pay a lot of money, and even set up some sort of data warehousing solution. And that’s why…
  • #26 The era of CRM is over. This is dated technology that was built to support a staff centric approach, and everything else has been added on as the world changed. Our technology, iMIS, is one system that supports the needs of everyone. My challenge to you, after you leave today, go back and honestly assess, is strategy driving your technology decisions? If you are a CEO, are you driving the message? If you’re not a CEO, are you challenging your CEO to be the person to lead this change? You’re going to hear from industry leaders that are practicing everything Philip and I discussed this morning, and we’re going to provide you with some tools that can greatly help you ensure that you’re next technology decision is strategy driven, and help ensure that you don’t invest in a technology platform that will never be able to meet the strategic needs of your organization. What are some of the major takeaways from our discussion this morning?
  • #30 We are going to take a short break until 9:45, and then we’ll start the breakout sessions. I know there are only two rooms, but there is a mobile site you can access to see this mornings agenda, which is www.advsol.com/cxodc. The Membership track will be held in Capital D, and the Fundraising organizations go to Capital B. Enjoy your break and I’ll see you all shortly.
