The Neurobiological Factors Associated with Depression Essay
The Neurobiological Factors Associated with Depression Depression is a mood disorder that affects
approximately ten percent of men and nearly twenty five percent of women at least once in their
lifetime (1). There are several types of clinical depression, such as unipolar depression and bipolar
depression. Unipolar depression consists of primarily depressive states while bipolar depression
involves a fluctuation between states of depression and mania (2). Some of the most common
symptoms of depression include excessive feelings of sadness, guilt, or worthlessness, a significant
change in appetite, insomnia or hypersomnia, energy loss, thoughts or attempts of suicide, and
anhedonia (3), (4). While the symptoms of depression are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While some of the findings from these genetic studies are still preliminary, several investigations have
indicated that the role of certain neurotransmitters, called monoamines, in depression is immense (7).
Neurotransmitters are chemicals in the brain that bind to receptors in order to excite or inhibit the
firing of neurons (6). The Catecholamine Theory of Mood was proposed as a major explanation for
the cause of depression in the 1960s by Joseph Schildkraut (7). Schildkraut suggested that a deficiency
of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine at receptor sites caused depression while increased levels of
norepinephrine caused mania. Some evidence for Schildkraut s account was established by the success
rate of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor drugs, which block the reuptake of monoamines and
facilitate the release of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and serotonin (8). Further evidence
has been established by studies that found decreased norepinephrine levels in the cerebrospinal fluid
of deceased depressed patients (5). More recently, drugs have been developed that selectively block
the reuptake of norepinephrine by the presynaptic cell. It has been found in preliminary studies that
the level of depression decreases in these patients, which provides further evidence for the role of
norepinephrine in depression. While empirical support for the Catecholamine Theory of Mood has
grown substantially, evidence from more recent studies highlights the

Pros And Cons Of Utilitarianism
1. Utilitarian s believe animals should be considered as equally morally relevant as humans because
the rights/interests of all beings aside from any form of discrimination or prejudice (speciesism)
should be morally relevant. That being said, like humans, non human animals possess sentience, or the
the ability to experience pain and pleasure. Having sentience is enough to say that non human animals
therefore also possess interests, interests that are similar (although not exact) to those of a human.
These common interests include being pain free, and living a life free from suffering. Because
utilitarianism entails taking into consideration the like interests of every party involved, animals must
then be taken into consideration, when appropriate, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Regan rejects utilitarianism as an answer for whether zoos are morally defensible because
utilitarianism requires extensive information regarding how much good or bad/ costs and benefits are
generated for all who are effected. Regan argues that the extent of information that would be required
to use utilitarianism as an answer to the question is more information than can possibly be attained. In
other words, there are far too many aspects and interests of humans and non humans to take into
consideration equally. It is an unachievable task and therefore Regan believes deciphering the question
via the rights view is a more tangible

The Verb “Google” Has Become A Staple In The Majority Of
The verb Google has become a staple in the majority of internet user s vocabularies; dominating as the
preferred method for Internet searching. Google is used by many individuals for varying reasons; the
academics using it for their research, to the public using it find a place to eat or how to cure a common
cold. This paper briefly outlines the history of Google beginning with its inception in 1996 following
with an explanation of search engine algorithms, and more specifically PageRank. Lastly, it will cover
how public receive their information through these algorithms, and the limitations and difficulty users
may experience while searching. At the beginning of 1996, Google was conceived when Sergey Brin

These algorithms are how search engines regulate whether a website is genuine or just spam, whether
it contains any notable data that users would be interested in, as well as other features to organize a
results page ( What is Search , n.d.).
When first conceptualizing Google, then called Backrub, Brin and Page had the goal that this search
engine would [analyze] the back links or the links that point to a Website to assist in the value of how
a particular site will be weighted in the final results, leading to Google s PageRank formula (Robison,
2007). Named after Larry Page, PageRank rests at the centre of Google s well known and widespread
search engine, thus becoming the most successful search engine algorithm developed yet (Robison,
2007). PageRank proved to be efficient in ranking information by assessing the subject matter in
correspondence to the rest of the content (Paparo, Müller, Comeelas, Martin Delgado, 2014).
PageRank allowed Google to move ahead of other search engines as the most used because of its
unique way of filtering content. While other search engines were built on the subjective criteria of the

Visual Inspection With Acetic Acid (VIA)
1.9.3. Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA): Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) is a simple,
inexpensive test, with moderate sensitivity and specificity for screening that can be combined with
simple treatment procedures for early cervical lesions (59). Visual inspectionis direct visualization of
the cervix after application of a solution of either acetic acid 3 5% (VIA) or Lugol s iodine (VILI). A
result is obtained immediately and treatment can be performed at the same setting. In visual inspection
with acetic acid (VIA), CIN lesions will turn white for a few minutes after application of acetic acid.
The effect of acetic acid depends on the amount of nuclear proteins, and cytokeratins present in the
cervical epithelium, which increases in CIN. (60) Scaling up and inclusion of VIA based ... Show

oncogenic HPV or high risk of cervical cancer.

colposcopy should be repeated every 4 to 6 months intervals for up to 2 years. For CIN I, cytology

normal, routine cytologic screening can be resumed (71).

Springfield, Illinois, And The Springfield
Although Springfield, Illinois was home to Abraham Lincoln, not everyone shared his views. Many
people were racist and prejudice toward the colored community. Not all of people s thoughts are
purely their own, some are given from peers, family, or the media. Newspaper media in Springfield,
Illinois during 1908 had such a large influence on the events and thoughts of the people, that they
essentially caused the Springfield race riot.
The Newspapers
In Springfield 1908, there were two major newspapers, The Illinois State Journal and The Springfield
Record. The Springfield Record and The Illinois State Journal were competitors during Abraham
Lincoln s presidential campaign. During 1908, both published racially intense stories and highlight
crime in black neighborhoods. Most of the white community who read newspapers with racially
intense stories were influenced by the words. Not everyone in Springfield supported Lincoln in
Springfield during the Civil War and his run for President. One major newspaper during the Civil War
and during the Springfield riots was The Springfield Journal. The Journal kept citizens up to date on
Lincoln s campaign. Every decision Lincoln made during his campaign was published in The Journal.
During the war and campaign, The Journal supported Lincoln but turned against his views when the
riots took place. Why is it that the Journal has to make daily record of its confidence in the president
elect. Is it to create or dispel doubt? After the war,

Pixar Animation Studios
Pixar Animation Studios Pixar has a very interesting early history. It began in 1979 as the Graphics
Group, which was one third of the Computer Division of Lucasfilm[ 0]. After moving to Lucasfilm,
they worked on creating the precursor to RenderMan[ 1], called REYES, meaning renders everything
you ever saw and developed a number of critical technologies, including particle effects and various
animation tools. After parting ways with Lucas film, Pixar became a corporation in 1986 with funding
by Apple Inc.[ 2] co founder Steve Jobs[ 3], who became its majority shareholder. The Walt Disney
Company[ 4] bought Pixar in 2006 for $7.4 billion, which made Steve Jobs Disney s largest
shareholder. Pixar started as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

transaction catapulted Steve Jobs, who was the majority shareholder of Pixar with 50.1%, to Disney s
largest individual shareholder with 7% and a new seat on its board of directors. Jobs new Disney
holdings surpassed holdings belonging to ex CEO Michael Eisner[ 16], the previous top shareholder,
who still held 1.7% and Disney Director Emeritus Roy E. Disney[ 17], who held almost 1% of the
corporation s shares. Disney and Pixar studios did not mean that the two studios were merging,
however. In fact, additional conditions were laid out as part of the deal to ensure that Pixar remained a
separate entity[ 18], a concern that analysts had expressed about the Disney deal. Some of those
conditions were that Pixar HR[ 19] policies would remain intact, including the lack of employment
contracts. Also, the Pixar name was guaranteed to continue, and the studio would remain in its current
Emeryville, California[ 20] location with the Pixar sign. Finally, branding of films made post merger
would be DisneyPixar . Pixar has produced thirteen feature films[ 21], beginning with Toy Story[ 22]
in 1995. Toy Story was one of my favorite films at the time. The animation was groundbreaking for its
time. It was followed by A Bug s Life[ 23] in 1998, Toy Story 2[ 24], 1999, Monsters, Inc.[ 25], 2001,

How Did Johannes Veermeer Use Of Visual Realism
Two artists in history are widely known for their abilities to depict scenes in such realistic manners
that you would never know they are actually paintings. These two artists were named Albert Bierstadt
and Johannes Vermeer. Both men came from different times and different ethnic settings. Dutchman,
Johannes Vermeer was born in the year 1632 and passed away tragically in 1675. Over his lifetime
Vermeer put his soul into his paintings, causing modern day historians and art lovers to struggle to
figure out how he painted such realistic scenes. His style of painting combined many pictorial depth
cues while maintaining realism throughout the relatively few paintings he produced. Then there is the
Prussian artist, Albert Bierstadt, who was born ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the case of Vermeer, his paintings The Music Lesson and The Concert both focus on individuals
comfortable in their everyday settings during the 1600 s. The emotions that are given off to the
viewers through the use of realism through the topics in both of the paintings, would be respectful and
understanding. However, in The Music Lesson, Vermeer added a sense of warmth and gentleness to
the individuals painted through added help of color perspective with the clothing and objects
surrounding them being much more vibrant. In The Concert, Vermeer added a sense of warmth
through color perspective with only a small ray of light shining on the women, while leaving the man
darker to invoke a sense of focus on his activities. Focusing still on color, another tool Vermeer used
to create a sense of visual realism was the use of shading. Shading is another pictorial depth cue that
allows for a painter to create a three dimensional appearance to a two dimensional painting through
the use of darker colors for the shadows of objects. In The Music Lesson, one of the most obvious
uses of shading appears with the use of a shadow behind the painting above the piano, caused by the
painting hanging forward. Another example of where shading was used, was with the shadows from
the legs of the piano itself on the wall. In The Concert, Vermeer uses shading in a more subtle manner
with the most obvious use of shading being the shadow cast from the painting hanging on the wall.
The subtlest use of shading would be the shadows that appear on the individuals clothing caused by
the folds of the material and objects preventing light from reaching the cloth. Vermeer also used the
pictorial depth cues of linear perspective and size perspective which focus on framing the painting in
real world size and creating a vanishing point. In The Concert, linear

Mission Command In Operation Desert Storm
Operations Desert Shield/Storm took place during the Gulf War, which was a conflict between Iraq
and a coalition force of more than 30 nations mandated by the United Nations, led by the United
States commanded by General Norman Schwarzkopf, who conducted one of the greatest military
campaigns of all times that resulted with the coalition victory. The name Operation Desert Shield was
for the operation leading to the built up of troops and defense of Saudi Arabia and Operation Desert
Storm for the combat phase to liberate Kuwait. This war included more than 500.000 United States
troops, dominated by technological superiority that definitely favored the coalition forces. The use of
missiles, guided bombs and invisible plane made easy to destroy Iraqi ground targets, being so the
first war in history to use the air power to defeat ground forces. The commander of this operation
General Schwarzkopf was a consolidated leader with great experience in war and diplomacy, who had
extend knowledge of the Middle East since the childhood. General Schwarzkopf ability to use the
principles of mission command led the coalition into the desired end state, which was the defense of
Saudi Arabia and liberation of Kuwait. General Norman Schwarzkopf successfully utilized mission
command principles within Operation Desert Storm/Shield by creating a shared understanding,
building cohesive teams through mutual trust, provide a clear commander s intent, and accept a
prudent risk, which played a

Similarities Between China And India
The worlds of China and India were greatly shaped and influenced by their geography and global
location. In addition, because of their location each civilization adopted its own social patterns. One
geographic influence on social patterns is that both civilizations are located near major, fertile river
valleys. Since river valleys offered fertile farmland for settlement, the power and rights of women in
both civilizations heavily declined. Likewise, as women lost power in the agricultural civilizations of
India and China, men on the other hand became the superior human gender and started to gain
immense loads of power. Also, shifting towards a more foreign level, China isolation and India s
closeness and close proximity to other major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As important as the social organization systems in both civilizations, family structure was as well
were extremely vital to both civilizations. Family structure in both civilizations were unique, but also
had its own similarities and differences. Some similarities that existed in both family structures
included were that both family structures were patriarchal which meant that males were more superior
to females and that the oldest male son inherits the inheritance of the father. Another similarity in
family structure that existed amongst India and China was that the males in the family had some
religious mystical twist to them. For example, in the Indian culture the males were worshipped as gods
by their family, and in China the father of a family was in charge of carrying the wishes of the
ancestors. On the contrary, both civilizations had differences in family structure. For example, in
Chinese families female infants would be killed off sometimes in order to preserve a healthy
population. Another difference between the two civilization s family structures was that in the Indian
patriarchal family the women were much more strong willed and clever than to their Chinese
counterparts. A final difference between the two family structures was that accordingly to
Confucianism the Chinese child must be extremely respectful of their parents and their elders and
Chinese children would suffer harsh consequences if disobeying or assaulting their parents. On the

Background
In December of 2014 the Albuquerque downtown experienced the establishment of an ad hoc
homeless tent city of approximately 80 homeless living in 36 tents located at First and Iron SW. Over
the course of two months city social services along with community agencies attempted to address the
needs of the tent city residents. By February 4, 2015 the tent city had been reduced to 14 tents.
On February 9, city government ordered eviction notices to the tent city residents. Following the

Lenient Parent Vs Drill Sergeant Parent
Although there are many types of parenting, two of the most common are the completely lenient
parent who is like a friend and the drill sergeant parent who expects nothing but the best from their
child. These two types of parenting present totally different ideas of a how a child should be raised.
From punishing, expectations, and the amount of freedom, distinction occurs.
Many teens today do not experience punishing, but with strict parents, pain, humiliation, and harsh
punishments will most likely occur. Phones are taken away; some parents even embarrass their own
child on social media. Weeks or months ,depending on the degree of what was done wrong, of
punishment and having no type of fun will be the life for the child of the drill sergeant. The lenient
parent prefers to let the child do and the consequences that follow can be considered punishment . As
more of a friend, the lenient parent usually prefers to let the child have fun because he or she did not
get to when they were younger. They prefer to experience life through their child. Discipline transpires

from a lenient parent. They will usually give a day or two for a chore to be completed. Rules are not
really enforced in their household. All parents want what is best for their child, but the friend type
parent will provide more comfort if the best is not portrayed on something like a test or performance.

Comparing Plath s The Bell Jar And Its Affiliates
The Bell Jar and Its Affiliates
Frequently, a writer will express the same symbols and themes in a variety of their works. This is the
case with Sylvia Plath, who not only wrote a multitude of poems, but also wrote the renowned novel,
The Bell Jar. Three of Plath s poems that share similar elements to her novel are Lorelei , Daddy , and
The Applicant . These ideas include death beckoning the characters, an unstable family unit, and
sexism towards women. The poems Lorelei , Daddy , and The Applicant can be compared to Plath s
novel The Bell Jar, by examining the key themes and characteristics of the works. The first of Plath s
poems that is comparable to The Bell Jar is Lorelei . In both of the works, death beckons to the
characters. In Lorelei , siren like creatures beckon for the speaker to drown herself. The speaker notes
how their ice hearted calling (Lorelei 31) is compelling her to commit suicide. This can be compared
to the ocean waves in The Bell Jar, which [draw] back, like a hand, ... Show more content on

Role of the Quantity Surveyor
The Role of the Quantity Surveying Profession
The origins of the Quantity Surveyor (QS) profession can dated back during the 19th century where
from the earlier measurer , a specialist tradesman, who readied schedules for a building project in
which all of the construction materials and labour activities and were quantified. Based on this
information, competing builders could submit priced tenders. Because all tenders were based on the
same schedule of information, they could be easily compared to one another, making it a much
simpler way of being able to chose the best bid as it narrowed the variables down (Powell, 1996).
While the QS profession owes its origin to the measurer it was until the 1820s that as a profession the

Quantities there is usually few items of large quantities. Skills of a QS in this field in particular are
that they must be conversant with the varying working rule agreements, day work rates and other
documents for example the civil engineering procedure published by the institute of civil engineers.
Since the 20century began the QS has had a role within the civil engineering contractors. Pre and post
contract services are provided to civil engineer client by a QS also.
Heavy and Industrial Engineering
With this type of work a QS will be working on such projects that include steel plants, off shore oil
and gas rigs, nuclear processing, production facilities and power plants to name a few. With the
economic downturn affecting all sectors of business of late a huge emphasis on cost control has been
placed upon these industries which is where the role of a QS is defined. In this industry sector it isn t
unusual to be referred to as a cost engineer as opposed to a QS. In this sector there is a great focus on

How Congress Constructs Its Acts
In order to advance the acumen of how Congress constructs its acts from inception to enactment, there
are various methodologies one can use. With that in mind, this exploration aligns to the Analytical
Framework methodology as described in our class textbook, The Struggle for Democracy by authors
Edward Greenberg and Benjamin Page. Thus, the congressional act I ve chosen to examine is the
Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 as it s of immense importance to all Americans. Specifically,
this act addresses the fundamental need of our nation s workforce as it relates to work/life balance;
therefore, by providing the context of the reasons why such a law emerged, identifying the
collaborating actors in the creation and implementation of the law, articulating the process of
enactments, as well as outlining out its path to enactment using the Analytical Framework, this
exploration will increase its reader s competency of knowledge about what transpired in passing the
Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. Likewise, the organization of this examination comprises of
four main sections correlating with the horizontal segments (levels) of the Analytical Framework. To
begin, the first section interprets the foundation of the FMLA by providing the historical background,
the economic and social environment of the American workforce prior to the FMLA, along with
previous legislation attempts and information on various legislative acts which are in similar
alignment with the FMLA:

Counseling For Alcohol And Drug Abuse
In Counseling for Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the need to use different techniques is an integral part of
the process. Working with an individual that is either entering into recovery or actively in recovery,
the clinician must take their time with introducing the 12 Steps. The individual may not be open to the
12 Step philosophies at the onset. Addiction is very complex and actively affects the person on a daily
basis; therefore, it is so important to start from the beginning of counseling to create a structured
program. Alcoholics Anonymous has given a wonderful platform of structure for the addicted ones to
create a safe, solid, 12 Step guideline to follow, in order to maintain Continual Sobriety, One day at a
time. Many counselors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of these false beliefs are that 12 Step programs are Cults, they are for old people, they are
religious, they brainwash people, sometimes they make you want to drink or use after going to a
meeting. These notions are false and inaccurate. It is usually individuals that have gone to the
meetings for a short amount of time and they are unable to sustain consistency. These individuals do
not get involved in service and they often return to using drugs or drinking again due to not being
done, with using substances. In the therapy interaction, these misconceptions must be heard by the
therapist and given ample time in counseling to talk about and unpacked, for further qualification.
This may take time and patients to hear these feelings and to process with the client. In facilitating
effective treatment while counseling, it is imperative that a person be listened to and validated for their
feelings. It is the counselor s job to find an opening to interject and challenge the client to see how
thorough they were in their attempt to gain sobriety. Usually in doing this, the clinician is able to
allow the client to see some of the half measures they took at these past attempts and failures. In the
Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous in How it Works, it reads, Half measures availed us nothing. We
stood at the turning point, we asked His protection and care with complete abandon. These are the
areas that allow

Analysis Of The From The Scarlet Letter

Composition: Analysis Chapter Nine, The Leech from the Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most iconic books in history; its storyline,
theme and literal characters have made an impact on the world of literature for hundreds of years.
What stands out the most in the book is the use of archaic diction and figurative language, which serve
to paint vivid, descriptive pictures of each character, specifically, Roger Chillingworth. In chapter nine
of The Scarlet Letter, The Leech , Nathaniel Hawthorne uses setting, allusion, metaphor, irony,
diction, and tone to reveal Roger Chillingworth, the town Leech s, evil, ominous character displayed
by his actions and words. Throughout chapter nine of The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne places
Chillingworth in or near the cemetery by the widow s house, an ominous setting that foreshadows his
death. During the book as a whole, Chillingworth usually pops up in spooky settings, such as Hester s
jail cell, the woods, Dimmesdale s dark lit room, and the scaffold at night, these all playing into the
eerie nature of Chillingworth himself. Towards the beginning of this chapter, it is suggested that
Chillingworth had come to terms with the reality of his estranged wife, Hester, having a child by
another man, and was so distraught and embarrassed that he changed his identity with a vengeance.
Unknown to all but Hester Prynne... he chose to withdraw his name

Middle Class Life During The Industrial Revolution
The Middle Class Life during
The Industrial Revolution began in England around the 1780 s. It was mainly based on the cotton
industry and subsequently many of the inventions that came out of this period were mainly for
producing and manufacturing cotton. Another stage of the Industrial Revolution was based on
inventions. This is when most of the luxury goods were produced for the public. The Industrial
Revolution is seen by scholars, as noted in A History of Western Society, as basically moderate and
evolutionary. Even though the Industrial Revolution was almost inevitable many people took
advantage of the new developments that came about and raised their standards of living because of the
goods that were previously ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus demand for goods within the country complemented the demand from the colonies. This was
very important because this raised the standard of living for the average families. It was like giving a
cookie to a child, the child would always want another one. As soon as the families experienced the
better life they will always strive to achieve that same quality of life.
There were many important developments to the cotton industry that came about due to the Industrial
Revolution. The problem the cotton industry had was due to inadequate machinery or the lack of
machinery. Clothes and other things that came from the cotton industry were being produced way too
slowly and the price of the material was way too expensive for the average family. The first problem
was that yarn was not being fed fast enough to the weaver, but in 1769, two new inventions solved the
problem, the spinning jenny and the water powered frame, both of which provided yarn faster.
Edmund Cartwright, who invented the power loom, combined the machine s characteristics and
purposes into one machine in 1800. Cleaning cotton was also a tedious and time consuming job, so in
1793, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, which could clean cotton 50 times faster than the previous
outdated methods. Many people would actually walk around in filthy garments all of their lives but
because of the new inventions they could afford to buy undergarments.

Hand Imagery In Macbeth
Following a military victory, three witches who visit Macbeth prophesize that he will become the
Thane of Cawdor, and eventually the King of Scotland. Macbeth s friend, Banquo, is told that his son
will become king in the future. Initially, Macbeth is motivated by his wife, but his hunger for power
quickly becomes insatiable. Macbeth s paranoia continues to rise as he realizes that outsiders will
wrest the power and glory from his posterity. In the play Macbeth, William Shakespeare uses hand
imagery to convey the mental state of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, thereby reversing their gender
roles as the play progresses.
After Macbeth murders King Duncan, Shakespeare uses the guilt imbruing his hands to characterize

herself and the common people of Scotland. Furthermore, instead of speaking in blank verse, Lady
Macbeth switches to prose throughout the scene. Shakespeare uses this idiosyncrasy to indicate that
her mental health is deteriorating. Lady Macbeth concludes by saying, Wash your hands, put on your

Fandom Research Paper
Towards the end of sixth grade (I think), I found out about fandoms. A fandom is a community of fans,
participating in fanac and interacting in some way, whether through discussions or creative works.
Some people feel that those in the same fandom as them are like family. We talk to each other, try to
make each other happy, support one another, and give advice and suggestions. Before you continue, I
highly suggest not looking up any animes, shows, or web comics that I may mention, no matter how
awesome I say they are, unless you are okay with staying up until one in the morning because you
wanted to know what happens next. Also, you might end up spending a lot of money if you want to
cosplay as a character. The Warrior cat books by Erin Hunter are great, and you probably won t lose

The trolls have four quadrants, and humans only have one! Matespritship is the closest to human
romance. Kismesissitude is based on mutual hatred rather than mutual love. Moirallegiance is often
misinterpreted as best buds forever or bromance , but with the Homestuck trolls, the emphasis is on
the fact that one of the two has particularly violent tendencies, even by troll standards, and their
interactions with their moirail help to make them less dangerous to themselves and others.
Auspisticism is probably the furthest from anything humans actually do. Basically, an auspistice
mediates between two normal enemies (as opposed to kismeses), in order to prevent it from becoming
too violent. Matespritship and moirallegiance are called red rom , or red romance . They are based on

A Comparison of Bless Me Ultima and The House on Mango...
Exploring Syncretism in Bless Me Ultima and The House on Mango Street
Syncretism is the fine line between Christianity and Native American Religions because it is the
ambivalent, simultaneous attraction of choice and identification to the influences of two or more
religious belief systems. Syncretism is most common among minority groups such as Hispanics. The
definition applied to their unique position of culture is brought about by the Native American and
Spanish ancestry. Ambivalence is shown even by the word Hispanic, which is an umbrella term. The
novels, Rudolfo Anaya s Bless Me Ultima(1972) and Sandra Cisneros The House on Mango

She represents the Native American minority culture and Christianity as a curandera. She is a Native
American spiritual healer who is derived from Rudolfo Anaya s own experience, of a woman who was
said to have powers to cure sickness (Hispanic Biography 42). The syncretism of Ultima s Christ like
abilities are given in two illustrations.
Ultima s Christ like nature is displayed through her abilities, or powers as a curandera to perform
miracles. Ultima s powers are shown in the text as being good; although, it is confusing to say whether
her powers are coming from Christianity, or witchcraft? To illustrate the issue of this comparison to
Christ, Antonio s mother recalls Ultima s powers saying, I have seen her work miracles. She learned
from the flying man from Las Pasturas (Anaya 85). The incongruity of this statement to that of
Christianity is clear cut. According to the Dictionary of Hispanic Biography, Anaya acquired the myth
and superstitions from his family who lived in Pastura about a women like Ultima, who could heal
(42). From Anaya s experience, syncretism of miracles and elements of superstition in folk
Catholicism is apparently true. However, the only one to perform miracles in Christianity is Christ.
To further illustrate the comparison of Ultima to Christ is the aura of power Ultima s character seems
to possess, and to which she gains respect as a healer. The instance in the text where

Black Hole Of Technology Summary
The black hole of endless, unimportant streams of technology enabled information is devouring
everyone living in the 21st century. Words once said by Leena Khan highlighting the downfalls of
technology. Leena Khan in the writing, Black Hole of Technology argues much better points than
Stefan Etienne in the writing, Teens and Technology Share a Future. Consisting of strong points,
having highly effective structure and claims, and it has good structure are all reasons The Black Hole
of Technology is superior to Teens and Technology.
The passage, Black Hole of Technology has many points that stand out. The author had reasonable
opinions which were shown from a real experience the author explained. The text has strong reasons
like the fact that technology isolates us from the rest of the world, keeping us indoors. When Leena s
friends were all glued to their phones, she said, I, on the other hand, glanced out the window
separating us from the beautiful weather outside. This proves that technology is not always the best
form of entertainment. When we are on our device, it is kind of like we form a barrier to the real
world, we get lost in the technology world for a while. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has a clear lack of scientific evidence, but that s no the purpose of this piece. The author intended to
write about how her quality of life is increased without technology, not to list off statistics. Some
people also criticize the piece for having not a wide enough target audience. This can be true for
writings, but in this circumstance, it is not. The author is arguing how teenagers are sucked into the
black hole, and how it affects each other. This whole passage is supposed to be for teenagers.
Therefore, the author does not have to narrow of a target

Porphyria s Lover And Neutral Tones
The loss of a loved one is perhaps the most difficult experience that humans ever come up against.
The poem Porphyria s Lover, written by Robert Browning, adds a sense of irony to this. At the most
superficial layer, the speaker s in both Porphyria s Lover and Neutral Tones, written by Thomas hardy,
both deal with loss. The tones in Neutral Tones seem to be indifferent, or Neutral. Porphyria s Lover
speaker ends up murdering his beloved at the end the poem. While this isn t the case with the speaker
in Neutral Tones, the two speakers are much more similar than we might think. The speaker in Neutral
Tones doesn t outright murder his lover, but there is a considerable amount of disdain and contempt
towards his supposed lover. The speaker in Porphyria s Lover is quite obviously a disturbed man, the
sinister nature of the speaker in Neutral Tones, however, is not as clear. Delving further into this idea,
I will also discuss other obscure parallels throughout the two poems. To start off with, the two
speakers both have incredibly negative and destructive ways of viewing the world. The speaker of
Neutral Tones views the world as though it is devoid of life and glee. He makes references throughout
the poem that suggest this. And the sun was white, as though chidden of God (2) is a perfect instance
of how the speaker in Neutral Tones views the world. The sun is usually the source of all light and
warmth in the world. The speaker does not see the sun in this way. Since he sees the

If those certain of rationality exist in
these slaves then they are not natural slaves and should not be enslaved .
Aristotle s belief that a man can become fully human if he engages in the political
association of the city , gives the state full authority over an individuals freedom.
According to his view an individual could not have any true rational needs or interest outside the
confines of the state, as the result it would be absurd to even desire any kind of individual
freedom in opposition to the state. Aristotle does not draw a line, which the state cannot cross
over an individuals privacy or freedom. A central question in modern day philosophy, is the
extent to which a state can impose itself on the freedom of an individual. As a result it would be
absurd to desire any kind of individual freedom in opposition to the state
A little further down in the book Aristotle argues and puts forward his idea that a new
system of government is required as all the proposed theories and existing governments were not
perfect. Before putting his theory on the table, Aristotle reviews and criticizes the existing
theories and government using there flaws and shortcomings as evidence supporting his case. His
second book concentrates on these flaws, discussing them in further details. He attacks all
theorists proposing abolishment of private property for individuals. Aristotle

Closing The Achievement Gap
Critical Issue 16 is, will school improvement efforts alone narrow the racial/ethnic achievement gap.
Katie Haycock believes in adequate funding and that high standards will improve academic
achievement (Paciorek). She thinks the only way to really close the gap is to fix the underperforming
schools. Richard Rothstein believes the achievement gap will be narrowed when the outside groups
collaborate, not just those functioning within the school. He wants to bring more people to the table to
improve academic achievement (Paciorek). I found an article called Closing the Achievement Gap by
Tashlai McKinstry. In her article she states there is an increase in the achievement gap in the US; the

One of the points that is stated in our book is, student expectations must be raised. When a student is
fighting one of those barriers that McKinstry stated, it will be more difficult on those students to raise
their expectations if they do not have a good support system. McKinstry states that educators often
lack specialized skills to address severe behavior and learning challenges and that the time to handle
those issues doesn t exist; which will result in the students having little to no help. I personally agree
with Richard Rothstein, the achievement gap cannot be closed without the collaboration of outside
groups. Teachers cannot close the achievement gap on their own, if they could then I think the
achievement gap would be closed by now. So, being that the achievement gap is not closed, it shows
that teachers being high quality educators is not the

seventeenth century, these schools were typically only open to men. Some schools did allow women to

men earned degrees, and attending a university was viewed as a very honorable path to take. This is

The Ozone Depletion
The earth atmosphere has many layers; the first two layers are the troposphere, the stratosphere, and
the ozone layer which sits in the lower area of the stratosphere. The troposphere layer is where a lot of
human activity occurs, such as planes and mountain climbing. The next layer is the stratosphere and
this is where the ozone layer is located as well. The ozone layer helps protect people from ultraviolet
radiation that mainly come from the sun. The ozone layer can be different depending on the season
and the location. Over the past few years, the ozone layer has been depleting because of human
activity. The main issue of the depletion of the ozone layer is the man made products that have been
created and has cause bad effect on the ozone layer itself. The ozone is a gas in the atmosphere that
protects all living things on Earth from damaging ultraviolet rays that come from the sun. With the
ozone layer depleting, it would be difficult for anything to survive much longer or not at all. The
ozone acts as a shield to protect living things from absorbing the ultraviolet ray and keeps them from
being damaged. Many man made materials are causing the ozone layer to deplete at a faster rate. The
author states, Emissions of chlorine and bromine from CFCs and halons are to blame for excessive
stratospheric ozone depletion (Ivanovich and Calm). This type of emission is going into the
atmosphere and is breaking down the ozone layer. Consequently, this is resulting in the

  • 2. The Neurobiological Factors Associated with Depression Essay The Neurobiological Factors Associated with Depression Depression is a mood disorder that affects approximately ten percent of men and nearly twenty five percent of women at least once in their lifetime (1). There are several types of clinical depression, such as unipolar depression and bipolar depression. Unipolar depression consists of primarily depressive states while bipolar depression involves a fluctuation between states of depression and mania (2). Some of the most common symptoms of depression include excessive feelings of sadness, guilt, or worthlessness, a significant change in appetite, insomnia or hypersomnia, energy loss, thoughts or attempts of suicide, and anhedonia (3), (4). While the symptoms of depression are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While some of the findings from these genetic studies are still preliminary, several investigations have indicated that the role of certain neurotransmitters, called monoamines, in depression is immense (7). Neurotransmitters are chemicals in the brain that bind to receptors in order to excite or inhibit the firing of neurons (6). The Catecholamine Theory of Mood was proposed as a major explanation for the cause of depression in the 1960s by Joseph Schildkraut (7). Schildkraut suggested that a deficiency of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine at receptor sites caused depression while increased levels of norepinephrine caused mania. Some evidence for Schildkraut s account was established by the success rate of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor drugs, which block the reuptake of monoamines and facilitate the release of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and serotonin (8). Further evidence has been established by studies that found decreased norepinephrine levels in the cerebrospinal fluid of deceased depressed patients (5). More recently, drugs have been developed that selectively block the reuptake of norepinephrine by the presynaptic cell. It has been found in preliminary studies that the level of depression decreases in these patients, which provides further evidence for the role of norepinephrine in depression. While empirical support for the Catecholamine Theory of Mood has grown substantially, evidence from more recent studies highlights the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Pros And Cons Of Utilitarianism 1. Utilitarian s believe animals should be considered as equally morally relevant as humans because the rights/interests of all beings aside from any form of discrimination or prejudice (speciesism) should be morally relevant. That being said, like humans, non human animals possess sentience, or the the ability to experience pain and pleasure. Having sentience is enough to say that non human animals therefore also possess interests, interests that are similar (although not exact) to those of a human. These common interests include being pain free, and living a life free from suffering. Because utilitarianism entails taking into consideration the like interests of every party involved, animals must then be taken into consideration, when appropriate, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Regan rejects utilitarianism as an answer for whether zoos are morally defensible because utilitarianism requires extensive information regarding how much good or bad/ costs and benefits are generated for all who are effected. Regan argues that the extent of information that would be required to use utilitarianism as an answer to the question is more information than can possibly be attained. In other words, there are far too many aspects and interests of humans and non humans to take into consideration equally. It is an unachievable task and therefore Regan believes deciphering the question via the rights view is a more tangible ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These algorithms are how search engines regulate whether a website is genuine or just spam, whether it contains any notable data that users would be interested in, as well as other features to organize a results page ( What is Search , n.d.). When first conceptualizing Google, then called Backrub, Brin and Page had the goal that this search engine would [analyze] the back links or the links that point to a Website to assist in the value of how a particular site will be weighted in the final results, leading to Google s PageRank formula (Robison, 2007). Named after Larry Page, PageRank rests at the centre of Google s well known and widespread search engine, thus becoming the most successful search engine algorithm developed yet (Robison, 2007). PageRank proved to be efficient in ranking information by assessing the subject matter in correspondence to the rest of the content (Paparo, Müller, Comeelas, Martin Delgado, 2014). PageRank allowed Google to move ahead of other search engines as the most used because of its unique way of filtering content. How Did Johannes Veermeer Use Of Visual Realism Two artists in history are widely known for their abilities to depict scenes in such realistic manners that you would never know they are actually paintings. These two artists were named Albert Bierstadt and Johannes Vermeer. Both men came from different times and different ethnic settings. Dutchman, Johannes Vermeer was born in the year 1632 and passed away tragically in 1675. Over his lifetime Vermeer put his soul into his paintings, causing modern day historians and art lovers to struggle to figure out how he painted such realistic scenes. In the case of Vermeer, his paintings The Music Lesson and The Concert both focus on individuals comfortable in their everyday settings during the 1600 s. However, in The Music Lesson, Vermeer added a sense of warmth and gentleness to the individuals painted through added help of color perspective with the clothing and objects surrounding them being much more vibrant. In The Concert, Vermeer added a sense of warmth through color perspective with only a small ray of light shining on the women, while leaving the man darker to invoke a sense of focus on his activities. Focusing still on color, another tool Vermeer used to create a sense of visual realism was the use of shading. Shading is another pictorial depth cue that allows for a painter to create a three dimensional appearance to a two dimensional painting through the use of darker colors for the shadows of objects. In The Music Lesson, one of the most obvious uses of shading appears with the use of a shadow behind the painting above the piano, caused by the painting hanging forward. Another example of where shading was used, was with the shadows from the legs of the piano itself on the wall. In The Concert, Vermeer uses shading in a more subtle manner with the most obvious use of shading being the shadow cast from the painting hanging on the wall. The subtlest use of shading would be the shadows that appear on the individuals clothing caused by the folds of the material and objects preventing light from reaching the cloth. Vermeer also used the pictorial depth cues of linear perspective and size perspective which focus on framing the painting in real world size and creating a vanishing point. In The Concert, linear ... • 26. A Comparison of Bless Me Ultima and The House on Mango... Exploring Syncretism in Bless Me Ultima and The House on Mango Street Syncretism is the fine line between Christianity and Native American Religions because it is the ambivalent, simultaneous attraction of choice and identification to the influences of two or more religious belief systems. Syncretism is most common among minority groups such as Hispanics. The definition applied to their unique position of culture is brought about by the Native American and Spanish ancestry. Ambivalence is shown even by the word Hispanic, which is an umbrella term. The novels, Rudolfo Anaya s Bless Me Ultima(1972) and Sandra Cisneros The House on Mango Street(1984) explore syncretism and how it enhances and exemplifies the issue of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She represents the Native American minority culture and Christianity as a curandera. She is a Native American spiritual healer who is derived from Rudolfo Anaya s own experience, of a woman who was said to have powers to cure sickness (Hispanic Biography 42). The syncretism of Ultima s Christ like abilities are given in two illustrations. Ultima s Christ like nature is displayed through her abilities, or powers as a curandera to perform miracles. Ultima s powers are shown in the text as being good; although, it is confusing to say whether her powers are coming from Christianity, or witchcraft? To illustrate the issue of this comparison to Christ, Antonio s mother recalls Ultima s powers saying, I have seen her work miracles. She learned from the flying man from Las Pasturas (Anaya 85). The incongruity of this statement to that of Christianity is clear cut. According to the Dictionary of Hispanic Biography, Anaya acquired the myth and superstitions from his family who lived in Pastura about a women like Ultima, who could heal (42). From Anaya s experience, syncretism of miracles and elements of superstition in folk Catholicism is apparently true. However, the only one to perform miracles in Christianity is Christ. To further illustrate the comparison of Ultima to Christ is the aura of power Ultima s character seems to possess, and to which she gains respect as a healer. The instance in the text where ... Words once said by Leena Khan highlighting the downfalls of technology. Leena Khan in the writing, Black Hole of Technology argues much better points than Stefan Etienne in the writing, Teens and Technology Share a Future. Consisting of strong points, having highly effective structure and claims, and it has good structure are all reasons The Black Hole of Technology is superior to Teens and Technology. The passage, Black Hole of Technology has many points that stand out. The author had reasonable opinions which were shown from a real experience the author explained. The text has strong reasons like the fact that technology isolates us from the rest of the world, keeping us indoors. When Leena s friends were all glued to their phones, she said, I, on the other hand, glanced out the window separating us from the beautiful weather outside. This proves that technology is not always the best form of entertainment. • 28. Porphyria s Lover And Neutral Tones The loss of a loved one is perhaps the most difficult experience that humans ever come up against. The poem Porphyria s Lover, written by Robert Browning, adds a sense of irony to this. At the most superficial layer, the speaker s in both Porphyria s Lover and Neutral Tones, written by Thomas hardy, both deal with loss. The tones in Neutral Tones seem to be indifferent, or Neutral. Porphyria s Lover speaker ends up murdering his beloved at the end the poem. While this isn t the case with the speaker in Neutral Tones, the two speakers are much more similar than we might think. The speaker in Neutral Tones doesn t outright murder his lover, but there is a considerable amount of disdain and contempt towards his supposed lover. The speaker in Porphyria s Lover is quite obviously a disturbed man, the sinister nature of the speaker in Neutral Tones, however, is not as clear. Delving further into this idea, I will also discuss other obscure parallels throughout the two poems. To start off with, the two speakers both have incredibly negative and destructive ways of viewing the world. The speaker of Neutral Tones views the world as though it is devoid of life and glee. He makes references throughout the poem that suggest this. And the sun was white, as though chidden of God (2) is a perfect instance of how the speaker in Neutral Tones views the world. The sun is usually the source of all light and warmth in the world. The speaker does not see the sun in this way. Since he sees the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Katie Haycock believes in adequate funding and that high standards will improve academic achievement (Paciorek). She thinks the only way to really close the gap is to fix the underperforming schools. Richard Rothstein believes the achievement gap will be narrowed when the outside groups collaborate, not just those functioning within the school. He wants to bring more people to the table to improve academic achievement (Paciorek). I found an article called Closing the Achievement Gap by Tashlai McKinstry. McKinstry states that educators often lack specialized skills to address severe behavior and learning challenges and that the time to handle those issues doesn t exist; which will result in the students having little to no help. I personally agree with Richard Rothstein, the achievement gap cannot be closed without the collaboration of outside groups. Some schools did allow women to attend, but only the wealthy. It wasn t until around 1980 that women were reported as receiving higher education to the same extent as men. • 39. The Ozone Depletion The earth atmosphere has many layers; the first two layers are the troposphere, the stratosphere, and the ozone layer which sits in the lower area of the stratosphere. The troposphere layer is where a lot of human activity occurs, such as planes and mountain climbing. The next layer is the stratosphere and this is where the ozone layer is located as well. The ozone layer helps protect people from ultraviolet radiation that mainly come from the sun. The ozone layer can be different depending on the season and the location. Over the past few years, the ozone layer has been depleting because of human activity. The main issue of the depletion of the ozone layer is the man made products that have been created and has cause bad effect on the ozone layer itself. The ozone is a gas in the atmosphere that protects all living things on Earth from damaging ultraviolet rays that come from the sun. With the ozone layer depleting, it would be difficult for anything to survive much longer or not at all. The ozone acts as a shield to protect living things from absorbing the ultraviolet ray and keeps them from being damaged. Many man made materials are causing the ozone layer to deplete at a faster rate. The author states, Emissions of chlorine and bromine from CFCs and halons are to blame for excessive stratospheric ozone depletion (Ivanovich and Calm). This type of emission is going into the atmosphere and is breaking down the ozone layer. Consequently, this is resulting in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
