Cults employ unethical techniques of persuasion and control to advance the goals of the group's leaders, potentially to the detriment of members. These techniques include isolating members from friends and family, using peer pressure and love bombing to gain compliance, controlling members' private lives and access to information, inducing fatigue through sleep deprivation and intense activities, and promoting total dependency on the group through doctrinal indoctrination and guilt. The goal is to suppress independent thought and force acceptance of the group's beliefs.

10 Things to Know About the Psychology of Cults
Both terrifying and utterly fascinating, cults have a tendency to capture the attention of just about everyone. Questions abound: Where do these people come from? What are they really doing inside those secluded compounds? Most interesting, perhaps, are the psychological components of cult life, questions such as: Who in the world would fall for that? In an effort to answer these questions and more, we’ve listed 10 things to know about the psychology of cults.
Cults are attractive because they promote an illusion of comfort.
Humans desire comfort, and in a fearful and uncertain world many turn to cults because they tend to promote exactly that. Jon-Patrik Pedersen, a psychologist at CalTech, has pointed out that cult leaders often make promises that are totally unattainable, but also offered by no other group in society. Such things might include financial security, total health, constant peace of mind, and eternal life — the things every human desires at the deepest level.
Cults satisfy the human desire for absolute answers.
Today’s world is a tough one, with more abstract issues than there are issues that are black and white. As Dr. Adrian Furnham describes in
Psychology Today
, humans crave clarity. Many people join cults because they believe they’re being offered solid, absolute answers for questions such as good vs. evil, religion, the meaning of life, politics, etc. Many cult leaders promote messages that are simple and seem to make sense, the exact opposite of what we’re often provided with in typical, everyday life.
Those with low self-esteem are more likely to be persuaded by a cult environment.
People are often surprised to learn that those who join cults are, for the most part, average people. They come from all backgrounds, all zip codes, and all tax brackets. But research done in the past two decades has found an interesting pattern: many people successfully recruited by cults are said to have low self-esteem. Cults generally do not look to recruit those with certain handicaps or clinical depression. However, people with low self-esteem are easier to break down, then build back up in an effort to teach them that the cult is the supportive environment they’re looking for.
New recruits are “love bombed.”
Once people have been recruited by a cult, they are often “love bombed.” This odd phrase is commonly used to describe the ways in which someone with low self-esteem is consistently flattered, complimented, and seduced in order to train their brain to associate the cult with love and acceptance.
Women are more likely than men to join a cult.
According to various research, women make up a whopping 70% of cult members around the globe. Psychologists have different ideas about why more women than men join cults. Dr. David Bromley of Virginia Commonwealth University points out that women simply attend more social gatherings, either religious or otherwise. This makes wom.

Religion as an Anthropological Concept
Scott E. Antes 1996-2009
Defining religion. Dozens of useful definitions exist for the term “religion”. For our purposes, however, I define religion as the belief in spirit beings or superhuman forces that directly influence human conduct, typically expressed through symbolic, ritual, and social behavior. This substantive (what something is, not what it does) definition works very well for the following reasons:
(1) It is all-inclusive; it defines the general concept of religion—including everything from animism to monotheism.
(2) It identifies religion as a cultural universal, something common to all human societies past and present. To the best of our knowledge, a belief in spiritual beings is and always has been a fundamental component of human culture.
(3) It simply describes what religion is (substantive definition), without complicating itself by trying to explain what religion does (functional definition).
(4) It does not confuse the concept of religion with any particular system of religion. Religious systems differ and continually change, whereas this definition of religion as a concept essentially is timeless.
(5) It is an elementary, simple—yet not oversimplified—definition that is easily applied and remembered.
Other definitions to consider:
Lydia Black 1997: “Religion is an ideological system of explicit and implicit notions and ideas related to reality accepted as true but unable to be verified empirically.” (Religion as a belief system.) I like this definition, but it overlooks the most fundamental component of religion, the belief in spirit beings.
Clifford Geertz 1965: “A religion is (1) a system of symbols which acts to (2) establish powerful, pervasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations in men by (3) formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and (4) clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that (5) the moods and motivations seem uniquely realistic.” (Religion as a system of symbols.)
J. Milton Yinger 1971: “Religion…can be defined as a system of beliefs and practices by means of which a group of people struggles with (the) ultimate problems of human life.” (Religion as an institution.)
Religious systems:
Ancestor Veneration. The practice of venerating deceased ancestors. Note: Some authors label this practice as “ancestor worship,” which is incorrect. Worship is reserved for gods (deities).
Animism. A religious system based on the belief that every living thing possesses a spirit, or soul, that animates it. In this context, “living” things include not only animals and plants, but such entities as the wind, the waters, the earth, the sky, etc.
Animatism. A religious system from the South Pacific based on the belief in an impersonal force called mana, which all things possess, but in varying degrees. The most powerful people in society are those whom its population believe to have the most mana. Believers consider mana to be somet ...
SPIRITUALITY WITH NO AFFILIATION TO RELIGIONAJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT : A common tendency with most people is to feel secure by declaring their affiliation to a
partcular Caste, Language and above all Religion. This may be giving rise to a sort of superiority complex over
others so that it becomes habitual for the herd to diligently follow the dictates of the so called Connoisseur.
There is absolutely nothing wrong in adopting the principles of any religion, provided one has honestly gone
through the original texts, not just interpretations and understood all possible shades. Everything ages and that is
a natural phenomenon. The age old rules, regulations and principles too, lose their efficacy in course of time.
This is a fact to be accepted without dispute. It is surprising that out of reverence, religious claims are never
taken for a thorough revision in the interest of humanity. All of them are granted eternity and the followers are
forced to accept them as pronounced centuries back. This eventually has brought in rigidity in thinking and
furthermore smothered the progress altogether. No religion has stood exception to this. In fact the fault does not
lie with the textual matter of any religion as such. It is the mishandling and misinterpretations vociferously
carried by the preachers and religiously practised by the devout followers. In the race to claim superiority over
others, the enthusiastic mediocres have earned hatredness towards other groups. More than having a clarity of
own religious scriptures they have been energetically involved in pinpointing and later harshly criticizing others
faith, practices, belief system, traditions etc. The ultimate aim of any religion tends towards spirituality that
involves regard for others practices and basic assumptions or outlooks. It is sad to see immature fellows
equating old traditions, which have remained absolutely unchecked, to spirituality and claiming own
presumptions as the ultimate. The present day need is to aim at spirituality having no affiliation to any religion
as such. Religion can always be a guide or a pathway to the spiritual zone and therefore one who aims high
should not get bracketted into a clumsy arena that provides no liberal attitude. This paper aims to check the
genuine details related to spirituality than getting sentimentally carried away by the popular but false claims.

Divine Mantra Chants For Protection from Evil Spirits, Demons, and Negativity
The 3 divine mantra chants protect an individual from the influence of all types of negative energies. The mantra chants will cast away any evil spirit or demon, however strong they may be, and create positive vibrations in the place of recitation. They create a powerful protective shield around the house which will reverse any curse or bad vibration that tries to enter the house. Even if a person is possessed and an exorcism is required, these mantras will prove beneficial and are strong enough to send the evil away.
While psychosis is commonly understood as something going wrong within a person, and while many treatment approaches attempt simply to stop that process, this workshop focuses on an alternative view that sees psychosis as resulting from attempts to resolve problems that preceded the psychosis. In this view, psychosis may be initiated by a dangerous type of experimentation or creative process, where people (especially young people) consciously or unconsciously try out new ways of seeing, believing and behaving to address life and spiritual dilemmas caused by their stressful or traumatic experiences. These are dilemmas which they were not able to master using tools provided by their family and their cultural background. Psychosis can deepen when this process of experimentation leads to errors in beliefs, perceptions and behavior, resulting in more trauma and distress, and then typically more misguided responses by self and others, in an increasingly severe vicious circle. There remains however the possibility that with assistance by people who understand this process, and with continued experimentation rather than suppression of experimentation, both the original difficulties and the difficulties resulting from attempted solutions that backfired can be resolved in ways that lead to personal and possibly even cultural renewal and health.
Based on Peggy McIntosh’s (1988) pioneering investigations of white and male privilege, we can, by analogy, understand heterosexual and cisgender privilege as constituting a seemingly invisible, unearned, and largely unacknowledged array of benefits accorded to heterosexuals and cisgender people with which they often unconsciously walk through life as if effortlessly carrying knapsacks tossed over their shoulders. This presentation examines the contents of these knapsacks.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.
