Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils extracted from plants to treat illnesses or provide relaxation. It has ancient roots but was coined in the 1930s. Essential oils have various medicinal properties and were used by ancient Egyptians, Greeks like Hippocrates, Romans, and Persian physician Avicenna who improved distillation methods. In the Middle Ages, aromatherapy had esoteric and religious associations and was used alongside herbalism. Modern aromatherapy research since the 1920s has confirmed some therapeutic properties but it is still considered alternative medicine.
