Today’s most beloved technology products and services balance design and engineering in a way that perfectly blends form and function. Businesses started by designers have created billions of dollars of value, are raising billions in capital, and VC firms increasingly see the importance of design. The third annual Design in Tech Report examines how design trends are revolutionizing the entrepreneurial and corporate ecosystems in tech. This report covers related M&A activity, new patterns in creativity × business, and the rise of computational design.

Slides from 10/21 talk at PuppetConf 2016 in San Diego.
The Design Patterns book is more than just a collection of elegant solutions to common problems, it provides us with a vocabulary and framework for analyzing those problems. Discussing and applying design patterns helps shift the focus from the immediate problem to design. As the Puppet community converged on an idea of what "good" code looks like, Puppet design patterns began to emerge and design became more important. With more and more complex software being modeled in Puppet, those design patterns are more relevant than ever before. As the Puppet language takes on more general purpose and orchestration features, the need for good design patterns only grows with every release. This talk will discuss some of those design patterns and the problems that they solve.

100 WORDS OR MORE
Consider your past experiences either as a student, early child care professional, or teacher. Describe a creative episode similar to the two boys who found a frog in the text (Creativity and the Arts with Young Children, p.309), when the teacher (maybe you) seized the opportunity (the teachable moment) to inspire the children to branch out using their imagination, creativity, and interests. Why do you think this was such a memorable moment?
WHAT WAS OBSERVED?
Two boys were exploring the outdoors and found a small frog. The teacher recognized their high interest and determined that this was an appropriate topic for a study. Their experience in nature provided the interest and stimulus for a long-term project on frogs. The teacher demonstrated her belief that this study could not only include informational learning but also be enriched by the use of the arts. She didn't know a lot about frogs, so she joined the children in looking for information about them. Stories provided the content for the drama about frogs, and the music selection encouraged listening and moving to the “frog music.” A group mural was created through the collaboration of several children, who created visual representations of the frog's environment. Another group of children investigated building a habitat for the frog in their classroom aquarium. All of the children were involved in active learning and used methods that matched their interests. At the conclusion of the study, the children shared their learning by making a giant book about frogs, creating a song about frogs, and demonstrating the development of the frog aquarium that emulated its outdoor environment. Finally, they returned the frog to its home, which led to their understanding that it needed to live in its natural habitat.

He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Cultivating Wonder: Using Picture Books to Explore STEAM Concepts
1. A child’s world is fresh and new and beautiful, full of wonder and
excitement. It is our misfortune that for most of us that clear-eyed vision,
that true instinct for what is beautiful and awe-inspiring, is dimmed and
even lost before we reach adulthood. If I had influence with the good
fairy who is supposed to preside over the christening of all children I
should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder
so indestructible that it would last throughout life, as an unfailing
antidote against the boredom and disenchantments of later years . . .
If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder without any such gift
fairies, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share
it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world
we live in.

5. FICTION & NON-FICTION
PAIRINGS
Picture Books
Contain information that
can serve as starting points
for investigating a topic
Non-fiction books
Are less utilized for this age
group but present information
in appealing ways
6. WHY PICTURE BOOKS?
• Fun & engaging preschool audience
• Some students connect more strongly to
fiction
• Stories are a good way to learn
• Some teachers more comfortable with –
already use them
7. USING NON-FICTION WITH
YOUNG CHILDREN
• Much more engaging than in the past:
illustrations, photographs – very visually
appealing
• Author Melissa Stewart writes that their
“purpose is to delight as well as inform”
• Careful use of language, great read-
alouds
8. HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES OR
EXPERIMENTS
Book pairs + activities = a more
memorable learning experience
• Open-ended
• Child-centered
• Extend the theme/topic
• Use everyday materials (as
much as possible)
**You don’t have to have a
science background!
9. OTHER ELEMENTS
Vocabulary
Don’t be afraid of using big
words!
Repetition
Multimedia (videos/apps)
- interactive, supplement
Multiple Learning Styles
• Movement – large
motor skills, physical/
kinesthetic learners
• Songs – aural learners
• Art –visual/kinesthetic
• Experiments – learn by
doing

have a sensory concoction
that is crumbly and soft, yet

37. Guidelines for using media with children --opportunities & challenges
2012 NAEYC & Fred Rogers Center Position Statement on Technology
and Interactive Media in Early Childhood Programs
*When used intentionally and appropriately, technology and
interactive media are effective tools to support learning and
development.
*Intentional use requires early childhood teachers and administrators
to have information and resources regarding the nature of these tools
and the implications of their use with children
*Limitations on the use of technology and media are important.
*Special considerations must be given to the use of technology with
infants and toddlers.
*Attention to digital citizenship and equitable access is essential.
*Ongoing research and professional development are needed.

Nonfiction notes: Increasingly visual -- Often have multiple texts
Count from Sesame Street singing the Batty Bat – good for dancing & counting, as is Bat Jamboree
Cause & effect; sink & float – continually popular. Great when you can do outside – Kids WILL get wet. Fall is great – do w/pumpkins – unlikely pairings
