This document discusses integrating knowledge management and collaborative learning through technical communication processes. It presents a study that created a system called KOLUMBUS to combine the strengths of knowledge management systems and CSCL systems. KOLUMBUS allows users to collect and distribute content, work jointly on creating and editing texts, and provide feedback through annotations. It also enables groups to jointly author items. The study found that KOLUMBUS improved awareness of others' activities and knowledge, and coordinated contributions in a way that supported learning communities.

Session description: Over the past 18 months, Purchase College has migrated from Blackboard to Moodle for our campus learning management system. Our decision was partially driven by the lower total costs for Moodle as an open source product and our desire to avoid the risks and lack of control associated with commercial applications. Our primary consideration however was that Moodle provides a pedagogically stronger learning platform, and its openness allows us to integrate it with other learning applications that faculty would like to use to promote student engagement.
This session will focus on the pedagogical aspects of Moodle as a learning platform. We will briefly discuss the process and findings Purchase College used to develop a consensus among faculty, students and technology staff to switch to Moodle. Participants will then spend the bulk of the session in a directed exploration of the diverse learning activities in Moodle that promote student engagement and learning, to facilitate discussion of how Moodle compares to ANGEL and Blackboard. We will examine examples of how Moodle’s open architecture allows it to integrate with external Web 2.0 applications, and finally discuss options for no-cost hosted Moodle solutions that will allow participants to evaluate Moodle for their campuses.

From a Blended e-Learning perspective, one of the main tools being offered for schools to consider, is the e-Learning Planning Framework. There will most likely be a need to scrutinise this further and unpack with schools how the framework can be utilised to enhance their current practice in e-Learning.
The target groups of Māori, Pasifika and Special Education needs students, are to be kept to the forefront and whatever PLD is offered to schools, the outcomes must be seen in raising student achievement.
This session will look at the following
- Illustrate what Blended e-Learning (BeL) looks like in schools with students, leaders, teachers, communities
- Demonstrate what the e-Learning Planning Framework is and how it relates to programmes/initiatives in schools
- Explain what the BeL project is: who is involved; organization
- Explore strengths, areas to be strengthened, opportunities and areas to be aware of in order to be explicit about the way we work; could/should work; and identify opportunities for collaboration and sharing within BeL and across the Te Toi Tupu consortium, as the lead providers of E-learning Professional Development across New Zealand.

eLearning implementations in higher education have for the most part been poor. This situation explained in terms of the failure of higher education to change teaching and learning practices. In this presentation Iain Doherty will examine this situation in the context of looking at The University of Hong Kong’s eLearning strategy. The University of Hong Kong’s eLearning strategy will be explained along with the role of the eLearning Pedagogical Support Unit in implementing the strategy. Iain will also look at an alternative learning theory – Connectivism – and ask whether Connectivist teaching and learning would facilitate eLearning whilst also better preparing graduates to take their place as knowledge workers in companies.
SYNERGY Induction to Pedagogy Programme - Criteria of Peer Learning (ENGLISH)Sarah Land
The SYNERGY Induction to Pedagogy programme was created by project partners, with the aim of helping micro-enterprise owners using the SYNERGY Exchange platform, to engage in peer-to-peer learning opportunities. This training programme comprises six modules and is delivered over 5 hours through a series of video lectures and PowerPoints which have been written, developed and recorded by project partners.
These modules provide micro-enterprise owners with a sound understanding of the basics in relation to e-didactics, quality criteria of peer-learning, evaluation of online learning resources and online learning environments, producing quality learning resources for peers and other knowledge that has helped them to become competent and confident online peer-educators. This module is entitled ‘Criteria of Peer Learning’ and provides content which relates to peer learning and offers an introduction to peer learning models.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
