Team member Mihai Nania presented on the SocialX web application, which aims to promote student interaction and scholarly improvement. SocialX allows students to submit and endorse solutions to exercises, gaining reputation. Teachers can create courses and add exercises, and endorse solutions as correct or wrong. The administrator enables new teachers. The system uses a model-view-controller architecture with separate data access, business, and presentation layers implemented in the database, business logic, and HTML presentation. Screenshots showed login, home, and teacher profile pages.

Session description: Over the past 18 months, Purchase College has migrated from Blackboard to Moodle for our campus learning management system. Our decision was partially driven by the lower total costs for Moodle as an open source product and our desire to avoid the risks and lack of control associated with commercial applications. Our primary consideration however was that Moodle provides a pedagogically stronger learning platform, and its openness allows us to integrate it with other learning applications that faculty would like to use to promote student engagement.
This session will focus on the pedagogical aspects of Moodle as a learning platform. We will briefly discuss the process and findings Purchase College used to develop a consensus among faculty, students and technology staff to switch to Moodle. Participants will then spend the bulk of the session in a directed exploration of the diverse learning activities in Moodle that promote student engagement and learning, to facilitate discussion of how Moodle compares to ANGEL and Blackboard. We will examine examples of how Moodle’s open architecture allows it to integrate with external Web 2.0 applications, and finally discuss options for no-cost hosted Moodle solutions that will allow participants to evaluate Moodle for their campuses.

- 2. About ”SocialX” is a web based application meant to promote student interaction and to provide a platform for their scholary improvement. SocialX is an exercise sharing tool where students gain reputation in front of the teacher and (especially) of the other students by submitting solutions to exercises and by collecting endorsements by other students inspired to reused solutions.
- 3. Objectives The SocialX system allows three types of users: • Teachers create courses, add exercises to topics of their courses and “endorse” a solution by stating if it's correct or wrong • The administrator enables new teachers • Students browse courses, exercises and solutions and add votes and new solutions.
- 4. Objectives Exercises are associated to topics inside one of the courses of a teacher. An exercise is added to the system by uploading a file containing all the material needed to describe and solve it (in the simplest case, a PDF file describing the problem, or a compressed archive containing all the required files), and associating the exercise to a specific course and topic.
