Key Points About This Course
• Approach: primarily workshop, not lecture
• Prerequisite: Upper Intermediate English (passed ITESO
Level 8 or equivalent standard test score); you will be
required to write at an advanced level
• Production: texts of various kinds at a high level of quality
and professionalism; you will have a valuable portfolio of
examples by the end of the semester
• Digital texts in class – must use electronic device – laptop
is best
• Iterative process on the major assignments – 1st draft,
feedback, final version; BOTH required to get the grade
• Assignments should be relevant to your goals and
professional interests: business, future profession, an
organization or project
What will we do in class?
Our primary focus is on writing and reading skills.
However, we will be using a variety of speaking and
interactive activities in class to keep it fun and interesting.
We are a class of mixed abilities!
If you have strong writing skills:
• Please be patient with those with lesser skills
• Please be patient with me as I help the other students
If you have weak writing skills:
• Don’t be afraid to ask questions! I will help you as much as time allows.
• Take the initiative to improve! Seek out additional resources: Writing Desk, tutors in the
Language Lab, online explanations and practices
Everyone:
• Be sure to read, understand and follow my feedback on your drafts
• Everyone will have the opportunity to improve their skills!
Please Remember
We don’t learn the rules of writing first, then write
afterwards.
We learn by doing.
We also learn by noticing.
Every time you read an English text, be a
detective and notice the details.
This is inductive learning.
