Crusades Dbq
The crusades were a bunch of wars in the Middle Ages when the Christians and Europeans tried to
retake control of Jerusalem from the Muslims. Jerusalem was important to Muslims during the
Middle Ages because it was believed to be where Muhammad ascended to heaven. The Christians
found it important because it was believed to be where Jesus Christ was crucified and rose again.
The first crusade began in 1095. Four armies formed troops of different Western European regions,
all led by Raymond of Saint Gilles, Godfrey of Bouillon, Hugh of Vermandios, and Bohemond of
Taranto with his nephew Tancred). When they arrived in Constantinople, Alexius made their leader
swear an oath of loyalty to him, but Bohemond refused to take the oath. May 1097, crusaders and
Byzantine attacked Nicea, which is now Turkey, the city surrendered in June. In June 1098, despite
the conflicts happening between the Crusaders and Byzantine leaders, they fought together in
Anatolia, taking the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1187, Saladin began a huge campaign against the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. his troops
basically destroyed the Christian army at the battle of Hattin, taking the city along with a large
amount of territory. Outrage over these defeats fired up the Third Crusade, led by the Emperor
Frederick Barbarossa, King Philip II of France and King Richard I of England. In September 1191,
Richard's forces defeated those of Saladin in the battle of Arsuf; it was the only true battle of the
Third Crusade. From the city of Jaffa, Richard reestablished control over some of the region and
approached Jerusalem, though he refused to lay siege to the city. In September 1192, Richard and
Saladin signed a peace treaty that established the Kingdom of Jerusalem and ended the Third

After the First Crusade in 1096, Christian kingdoms were very upset. By 1144, a Mamluk general,
Imad–ed–din Zangi, had succeeded in uniting enough Turks and Arabs in his army to attack the
Christian kingdoms. Zangi did not take Jerusalem, but he did take the Syrian city of Edessa nearby.
In Europe, people were very upset when they heard that the Turks had taken Edessa. The Pope (Pope
Eugene III) ordered Bernard of Clair Vaux (in France) to preach a second crusade to take it back and
defeat Zangi. The young king of France, Louis VII, agreed to go, along with the queen, Eleanor of
Aquitaine and Conrad III of Germany, the Holy Roman Emperor. Below is a map of the route they
took and where they had their major battles. A map showing the path the crusaders took during

At the time, this was a popular Christian view, because most of the population were lowly educated
and were highly influenced by the Church. The Muslim's perspective was not documented as well as
the Christian's perspective was. Although, the Muslims also believed that Jerusalem was rightfully
theirs as the place had a religious connotation for them, as Mohammed travelled to the mosque that
was furthest from Mecca. Now that we know more, we learnt that this war involved politics and was
benefitting rulers and giving them more power, as supported by the quote above. Another fact that
we now know is that the war also involved revenge, betrayal and greed, as the Pope and King were
both trying to keep and raise their own power. An example of this was how the Pope called the
second crusade because Zangi took Edessa and the Pope wanted the land back, so he called it a
religious war to persuade people fight for him. This reinforces the fact that the Pope uses the
influence of God on the majority of people, to make them do things for

World history The fall of Jerusalem.
There are many reasons for the fall of the city of Jerusalem. Some of those reasons being that the
defenders of the city were completely out–numbered by Saladin's army, the weakness of the city's
walls, a long siege by Saladin's army, and the collapse of the Kingdom of Jerusalem itself. When
Saladin's army approached the city of Jerusalem the defenders of the city was starchily out
numbered. The cause of this was the fact that in a previous battle now known as the battle of Hattin
the Jerusalem force of 16200 men were completely decimated by Saladin's force of 42000 men. The
reason for this great defeat at the hands of Saladin's army was poor leadership. The new king of
Jerusalem Guy was bent on attacking Saladin's army as soon as possible. This caused the new king
to leave the city of Jerusalem with most of its defenders. After he left the city is where he made his
biggest military blunder. He made camp with his army at the first watering hole outside of
Jerusalem. Guy and his army however did not stay long. They soon moved out in search of Saladin's
army this was his fatal mistake. Instead of staying at his original camp where he and his army had a
good supply of water he made a brash decision and decided to march his army in the pursuit of
Saladin's army. His original camp was the only source of water for many miles. With this decision to
march without a good supply of water he made his army very

The First Crusades
First Crusade There once was a time where religion ruled the world, where the people of that
religion would go to any lengths to protect it, and even give up their lives to their beloved god. This
tale is a great representative of the determination and wholeheartedness of the followers of a certain
belief. This is about the Crusaders, on their quest to take back the Holy land, for their god, called the
First Crusades. A group of Turkish Muslims would go to any lengths to keep the Christian pilgrims
from visiting their Holy Land. This worried Alexis I, a Christian king, because the Turks had already
captured parts of his empire and were only 30 miles away from capturing his capitol. He knew he
needed help so he turned to Pope Gregory and asked him to find people to aid in the fight against
Muslims, but he didn't agree, and died, passing his position on to the next pope named Pope Urban
II, who was very excited about going to war and ended up giving a speech. At the end of the speech,
the pilgrims cheered,"God wills it!" he gained many troops. This ... Show more content on

The Muslims didn't take a liking to that and attacked the town while the army was still in Orchha,
burning the town, poisoning the food and water supplies. Everything was going the Muslims way
until they decided to launch a full scale attack, and if there's one good thing about the Crusaders it's
that, they are extremely good at close quarter combat and slaughter the men. They continued their
march, taking Antioch in a nine month siege, and stopping in Agra, causing the commanders and the
generals of the army to disagree about whether or not to take Arga. The king burned the people who
didn't want to take it and took it anyway. They gained more troops by their new allies, The Kingdom

Why Did The First Crusade Happen
The first Crusade was an event that happened between the times of 1096–1099 and played a very
important part in Medieval England. The reason that the First Crusade happened was because they
were trying to capture Jerusalem from the Muslims. They didn't want the Muslims to have Jerusalem
because it belonged to the Christians. The First Crusade was a major event that happened and it still
talked about today. Jerusalem was captured by the Muslims, Christians were mad about this when
they found out. Many people also volunteered to fight on the First Crusade. An important person of
the event was Alexius l of Constantinople because he was scared that his country might fall under
the Muslims. He also needed help with this so he called the Pope, Urban ll, to tell him what was
going on with what was happening on the First Crusade and to ask if he could help him. In 1095,
Urban ll spoke out to a crowd and France and called for a war against the Muslims so that Jerusalem
could be regained to the Christians and in his speech he said: "If you are killed your sins will be
pardoned." This quote means that if participate in the First Crusade than if you die that all of your

Inaccuracies Of The Balian In The Movie Kingdom Of Heaven
The movie 'Kingdom of Heaven' is about the fight for the Holy city of Jerusalem. Balian, our main
character who we follow throughout the movie, is the leader of the Christian crusaders. In the
beginning, he is seen in France, at the grave of his wife, who had committed suicide after the death
of their children. The crusaders come to France, and offer a position with them to Balian. At first, he
does not want to go, but after killing a man, he catches up with the crusaders and joins them in their
battles. He meets, and eventually falls in love with the Queen, Sybilla. He goes through many
battles, and eventually ends it all with a truce with Saladin. In the following paragraphs, I will now
explain to you the inaccuracies of this movie. My first topic is on Balian. To start off, he was not,
and never lived, in France. In result, he never needed to catch up with the crusaders, being that he
was already living in Jerusalem. The opening of the movie is him with his wife's grave, praying,
because she had committed suicide. In reality, she never did. Balian was shown as an illegitimate
child, not knowing his father. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He simply made the men kneel, said a few words–and even slapped one man, before declaring them
all knights. There was actually a lot more to it than just saying words, there was training involved in
this. Balian was asked by one man, Bishop, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, if making a man a knight a
better fighter, to which he replied, 'Yes'. The actual process would begin when the boy was 7, all the
way up to the age of 21. The article 'Becoming a Knight' states that "Knighthood training was a long
and often arduous process" (Alchin). This is showing that those men could not have even gotten a
fraction of the training other knights had gotten in that short of a period of time–from being
knighted to the start of the fighting at the

The Causes Of The Crusades
In case you didn't know the Crusades are a series of battles fought around 1096 to 1291. Now you
may be thinking why were the Crusades fought. Well, the Crusades were fought for control of the
Holy Land. They were a series of religious and political wars to gain control of Jerusalem, which
was important to Christians, Jews and Muslims. " It was important to Jewish people as it was the
site of the of the original temple to God built by King Solomon."
(http://www.ducksters.com/history/middle_ages_crusades.php). Muslims believed it was where
Muhammad ascended to heaven and it was where Christ was crucified and rose again so was an
important place also for Christians.
In June 1098, Jerusalem fell. Why? Well there were lots of struggles in Antioch because of the
combined forces of the Byzantine and the Crusaders. They continued to walk to Jerusalem. The
Byzantines and the Crusaders were also joined by the Egyptian Fatimids. In 1099 the governor of
the Jerusalem had to bow down and leave his position as Governor. The Crusaders slaughtered many
men and women in the fall of Jerusalem.

Kingdom Of Heaven Analysis
The movie "Kingdom of Heaven" tries to portray the crusades that occurred in the 12th century
while at the same time describing the middle age era. Some of the movie content contains truth of
that period as well as fiction. The movie follows Balian of Ibelin and his journey from being a
blacksmith to defender of Jerusalem. Although the movie has manipulated some of the real events to
appeal to a broader audience, make it more Hollywood like, it does a decent job in portraying the
battle over Jerusalem and some of the circumstances around it.
The church played a significant role during the middle ages. In fact, the church reached the height of
its power in the high middle ages: the 11th, 12th, 13th centuries. It was during this period that the
crusade battles occurred. The movie tries to portray the events that led to one of the battles, the
Battle of Hattin 1187. The idea that "God wills war" was apparent in both the movie and real life.
Crusaders became consumed with fighting and killing the Muslims which was clear in Guy de
Lusignan and Reynald de Chatilon actions. On the other hand, Baldwin and Balian, in the movie,
represented the crusaders who wanted to maintain a peaceful relationship between the Muslims and
the Christians.
Another concept that appears in the movie that is linked to reality is the ideas of becoming a
crusader in order to repent your sins. One of the main reason why Balian became a crusader is to
repent his sin, of killing a priest, and his wife

The World Of The Crusades
These past few weeks, everyone in the tenth grade has been learning about the crusades. The people,
weapons, food, diseases, and technological advances (or disadvantages since it was the Dark Age)
were all taught to us and now it is time to put it to the test. We learned that the crusades affected all
three religions that have ties to Jerusalem, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. We watched Kingdom
of Heaven, a historical fiction movie based on the crusades. The time of the story that we see is
based between the second and third crusade. Although the movie had many historically correct parts,
there were also a lot of inaccuracies. My job is to show you the inaccuracies and what would have
actually happened during that time if that crusade had actually happened. I will be touching the
topics of weaponry and how they used it, who Balian actually is, and what people actually knew
during that time period.
First off, I want to touch on the topic of weaponry and how they used it. During the movie,
Kingdom of Heaven, they show trebuchets hurtling firing rocks at the walls to Jerusalem, horses
armor, and they show Balian being able to fight and kill one Islamic servant after only one training
session with his father, Baron Godfrey. Although this makes for a dramatic and exciting film, it just
is not accurate and that makes many historians just shake their heads.
Trebuchets were a big way of fighting in the 12th century. They got the kind of weapons they used
right, they just did

The Crusades Failure
The Crusades were a series of holy wars that played out between 1095 and 1291 C.E. The Crusades
officially began during the 11th century in the Council of Claymont when Pope Urban II called for
the first crusade. The reason why the people joined him was because the goal of the Crusades was to
claim the holy city of Jerusalem. There were many crusades that followed, most of them
unsuccessful. The Crusades were a series of holy wars brought about in an effort to bring unity
between Christians against the Seljuk Turks, their goal to claim the holy land resulted in failure,
however, the Crusades shed some light on what life was like in medieval Europe.
Initially, the Crusades began in an effort to bring people together against the Seljuk Turks. Alexius
Comnenus, the Byzantine emperor, asked Pope Urban II to call for a crusade. Emperor Alexius and
Pope Urban II had started the Crusades in an effort to gain power. Pope Urban II would gain power
if people united under him, "[Pope Urban II] wanted to unite Europe... [he thought] the best way for
people to unite is to give them a common enemy,"( The Crusades). The Byzantine empire was not
doing well because of the Seljuk Turks, they captured the city of Anatolia, the traditional heartland

When Pope Urban II delivered his speech, people thought that crusading was sinful, "War might be
just but [it] wasn't something that got you into heaven, but a pilgrimage to a holy shrine might help
you out on that front," (The Crusades). The Crusades were pilgrimages with wars throughout.
People still were not convinced until Pope Urban II offered absolution for their sins, "Undertake this
journey eagerly for the remission for your sins, and be assured of the reward of imperishable glory
in the kingdom of heaven," (Rice 14). No pope has ever offered absolution for war, but it worked.

Compare and contrast of Jerusalem in 1187 and "Kingdom of Heaven":
The movie "Kingdom of Heaven", has many historical facts, but then again has many historical
inaccuracies. Geography, religion, religious tolerance by Bailian before the battle of Jerusalem, and
the battle for Jerusalem itself. While some of this is historically accurate most of it is a Hollywood
remixes of historical facts. The geography of the movie was wrong, because it was filmed in Spain
and Morocco not in Jerusalem where everything actually happened. We all know that Jerusalem is
not near the Sahara Desert like it shows in the movie. After Balian of Ibelin left his job as
blacksmith but before he met his unknown crusader father, he became shipwrecked on the coast of
Israel. He walked through the Sahara desert on his route to the Holy city which is not what the coast
of Israel is like. Balian was never a blacksmith and did not have to travel to the Holy Land because
he grew up in Jerusalem. Jerusalem mainly consists of hills but is not mountainous. Saladin defeated
the Christians at the shore of Lake Tiberius but since it was filmed in the desert the battle was a
waterless fight. When Balian noticed his land had no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

on Saladin to show up with his army, which would never happen without someone being killed. In

Lone Success of the First Crusade
The Lone Success of the First Crusade
The First Crusade was the pinnacle of the entire Crusade campaign. Its lone success in the long line
of Crusades proves its uniqueness among the six others that were mostly ineffective. Certain
fortunate circumstances definitely contributed to the Christian success in taking the Holy Land on
their first try. Similarly, many other circumstances were responsible for why the following crusades
were less successful and in some cases disastrous. From the first crusade being a holy pilgrimage for
military and religious reasons, the following crusades were for personal gain, power, and wealth.
Also, the distance between Europe and the Holy Land gradually took a toll on the Christians in the

The crusaders' pride for Christianity transcended their nationalism and motivated tens of thousands
of people to journey across Europe to the Middle East. This religious pride inspired enough people,
many who had never even left their homes, to travel to a foreign land that they had only heard of
through stories and in the Bible (Ethics–War). In their eyes, they were rightfully reclaiming their
religion's land and retaking the land where their savior lived and died.
To the early Crusaders, taking back the Holy Land was only the beginning in the line of liberating
Spain, southeastern Europe, and other Christian lands that the Muslims began to fight for
(Whittemore). In addition to helping fellow Christians, the Pope promised the Crusaders that in
return for fighting for their religion they would be forgiven of all their sins and were assured to enter
heaven. Before the First Crusade, Pope Urban II traveled across Europe to speak out to the Christian
population. This is also one of the first recorded times in European history in which the pope
actively traveled outside the Vatican to speak to the average Christian European (Urban II). Seeing
Pope Urban II in person speaking on protecting Christianity only inspired more people to join the
First Crusade. According to Robert the Monk who recorded many of the

particular right. In the interim, Byzantium was losing extensive region to the attacking Seljuk Turks,
who crushed the Byzantine Army at the clash of Manzikirt in 1071 and went ahead to pick up
control over quite a bit of Anatolia. Following quite a while of mayhem and common war, the
general Alexius Comnenus grabbed the Byzantine position of authority in 1081 and merged control
over the rest of the domain as Emperor Alexius I. In 1095, Alexius sent emissaries to Pope Urban II

Driven by two awesome rulers, King Louis VII of France and King Conrad III of Germany, the
Second Crusade started in 1147. That October, the Turks pulverized Conrad's powers at Dorylaeum,
site of an awesome triumph amid the First Crusade. After Louis and Conrad figured out how to
collect their armed forces at Jerusalem, they chose to assault the Syrian fortification of Damascus
with a multitude of approximately 50,000 (the biggest Crusader constrain yet). Already very much
arranged towards the Franks, Damascus' ruler was compelled to approach Nur al–Din, Zangi's
successor in Mosul, for help. The joined Muslim strengths managed an embarrassing annihilation to
the Crusaders, unequivocally finishing the Second Crusade; Nur al–Din would add Damascus to his
extending realm in 1154.
THE THIRD CRUSADE: After various endeavors by the Crusaders of Jerusalem to catch Egypt,
Nur al–Din's strengths (drove by the general Shirkuh and his nephew, Saladin) seized Cairo in 1169
and constrained the Crusader armed force to empty. Upon Shirkuh's ensuing demise, Saladin
expected control and started a battle of successes that quickened after Nur al–Din's passing in 1174.

The Importance Of The Christian Crusades
For centuries, religion has played an important role throughout history by having the power to unite
individuals, towns, kingdoms, or even countries. By giving people something to believe in, it gives
them a "purpose in life", because life without purpose would be boring and dull. An example of this
unity was the Christian Crusades during the Middle Ages. The Crusades were a chain of Christian
military campaigns against the Turkish Muslims that occupied the holy land, Jerusalem, which
lasted from 1095 to 1291. These Christian crusades all started because of Pope Urban II's call to
unify all Christians from France and the Holy Roman Empire and to retake Jerusalem from the
Muslims.
The main reason that united Western Europe was when the Seljuk Turks invaded the Byzantine
Empire and captured a big portion of the kingdom. During the chaos of the invasion, Alexius
Comnenus, an army general, was able to seize the royal throne and consolidate his power and
control over the last remaining pieces of the empire as the new emperor. As a last attempt, Alexius
called out to Pope Urban II for assistance in retaking the Byzantine Empire and Jerusalem from
Muslim control. When Urban II heard about the Turk's slowly advancing through Europe, he called
for a meeting in the Council of Clermont, which gathered hundreds of clerics, nobles, and peasants.
Urban II was able to conjure thousands of volunteers for his expeditions by claiming that all sins
would be forgiven if they joined, meaning

Analysis Of The Film Kingdom Of Heaven
It cannot be denied the role popular culture plays in the the public's knowledge and understanding of
historical events. For a portion of the population once schooling ends, historical films become the
main way people are exposed to history. Because of this it is vital to understand the benefits that are
provided by these historical films and how they impact the way viewers think about the past and the
world they live in today.
The 2005 film "Kingdom of Heaven," directed by Ridley Scott, is a prime example of popular
culture being able to educate the public about the Crusades and Muslim/Christian relationships of
the past. Two cuts of this film exist. The theatrical cut is 140 minutes long and tells the basic story of
Crusader Balian of Ibelin, Muslim leader Saladin, and the fall of Jerusalem during the Third
Crusade. The director's cut, released in 2006, is 192 minutes long and fills in some of the gaps of the
story the theatrical cut was missing. While the film contains many historical inaccuracies, it
promotes historical truths that needed to be heard in the world at the time of its release and still
today.
Some of the historical inaccuracies include the gross mishandling of Balian's story. His location of
birth, family, and occupation are changed and a romance between Balian and Sybilla, the sister of
the King of Jerusalem is invented for the film. The real Balian of Ibelin was born in the Holy Land
to a noble family while the fictional Balian is the French–born bastard son of a knight who was
trained as a blacksmith. Some of these changes to Balian's character were made to allow for the
audience to be introduced to the Holy Land and the Crusades through his eyes, as stated in the
featurette titled, "Creative Accuracy: The Scholars Speak," included with the director's cut of the
film. Because of these changes, people's interpretation of class status and social mobility in the
Middle Ages is misrepresented giving viewers a false understanding of how social status in these
societies affected someone's occupational prospects.
Another anachrony is that the character of Sybilla is allowed to do things that women in the Middle
Ages would not have been allowed to do such as travelling with only a

The Crusades The Crusades began in 1095, when Christian armies from Western Europe reacted to
Pope Urban II's wish to go to war against the Muslim armies. The Christian army wore the cross
made with red blood cloth to symbolize their religion. The Crusades took place between 1095 and
1291 and the goal was to stop the spread of Islam, to control of the Holy Land, to conquer pagan
places, and to recapture Christian territories. Two–thirds of the ancient Christian world had been
conquered by Muslims by the end of the 11th century but the Crusades, attempting to check this
advance, initially enjoyed success, founding a Christian state in Palestine and Syria, but the
continued growth of Islamic states denied those gains. There were a total of 11 official crusades in
all. Only the First and Third Crusades were successful in achieving their main goal. In the long
history of the Crusades, thousands of knights, soldiers, merchants, and peasants lost their lives on
the march or in battle. But even though only the First and Third Crusades were successful in
reclaiming parts of the Holy Land, the Crusades played an important role in the expansion of
Europe. The Crusaders faced a multitude of obstacles. They didn't have a consistent or widely
accepted leader, no consensus about the relations with the churchman who went with them, no clear
definition of what the pope would do during the crusading and no agreement with the

The Causes Of The Crusades
The crusades was a 200 year war of bloodshed and violence. It was a series of wars between the
Muslims and the Christians for the Holy Land. The Christians wanted to convert Muslims to
Christianity. It was debated whether Christians did the crusades to gain power or solely to convert
Muslims.
The first crusade happened between the years of 1096 and 1099. "Most historians consider the
sermon preached by Pope Urban II at Clermont–Ferrand in November 1095 to have been the spark
that fueled a wave of military campaigns to wrest the Holy Land from Muslim control" (The
Crusades(1095–1291) |Essay|). "The bloody, violent and often ruthless conflicts propelled the status
of European Christians, making them major players in the fight for land in the Middle East"
(History.com Staff). The Christians took over the Holy Land also known in present day as
Jerusalem. By taking control they prevented the Seljuk Turks expanding. Pope Urban II ordered 4
nobles to lead 30,000 crusaders to fight through Anatolia and head to Palestine. They took Antioch,
surrounded Jerusalem and got over the walls. A traitor had led them through the city walls. They
killed any Jews or Muslims in these two cities. The ones they let live were sold into slavery. The 4
nobles each made crusader kingdoms in Palestine, Syria Lebanon, and Turkey. The Turks went into
Constantinople.
The Second Crusade happened between the years of 1146 and 1148. The Turks took control of
Edessa. The King of France, Louis VII, and the

The Causes And Consequences Of The Crusades
The Crusades were indeed about power and politics, in terms of its motivations and consequences.
Political motivations were significant in shaping the Crusades, as evident from the rivalry for power
between the Christians and the Muslims, as well as internally within the Christian world, and the
launching of the Crusades by Pope Urban II who harbored political interests in establishing his
authority in the Christian world. However, it is wrong to say that the Crusades had nothing to do
with religion because whilst the political and power motivations to prevent the Muslims from
gaining any more Christian territory, and to fuel European expansionism was present, the key
driving force in most parties was religious feeling. Motivations for the ... Show more content on

Pope Innocent III called a new Crusade in 1198. It was led by French knights. They were setting out

What Are The Objectives Of The Crusades
Crusades (1095–1291) were a number of holy Christian wars fought against the Muslims in order to
capture holy places of Palestine mainly Jerusalem. The crusade was considered a justified war and
regarded as holy by the pope. A total of 8 wars were fought between the Christians and Muslims in
this regard which are collectively known as Crusades.
The initial objective of the crusades was to get hold of Jerusalem. Jerusalem was considered a
sacred place by the Christians. It was a place of pilgrimage for Christians as the Holy sepulture in
Jerusalem marked the initiation of hill of crucifixion and that Christ was buried there. Different
individuals had distinctive intentions in battling the war; some did it for sacred reasons other for
getting the region and force. Other economic and territorial reasons for the Crusades were to

There were monetary issues and to pay the debt to venetians, the crusade was distracted and
pressurized to attack Constantinople. The Crusade lost its objective of conquering the Holy sites.
The Children crusade was battled in 1212, which was a disaster. The campaign was driven by
German and French Children who accepted that the Medittarnian Sea would dry up by marvel and
they would have the capacity to cross it, which didn't happen. What's more, the greater part of the
children were put to slavery by the Turks.
The fifth Crusade ended gaining nothing. The 6th Crusade was driven by Frederick II who
succeeded in conquering Jerusalem once more. But Jerusalem was vanquished again by the Muslims
in 1244. In response to which Louis IX of France called for 7th Crusade. But Louis was caught in
Egypt and was compelled to pay a heavy fine. In 1291, The Egyptian Mamluks, who were wild
warriors, assaulted and vanquished Acre which was the last city of Palestine under the Christian
tenet. This denoted the end of Christian govern in Palestine and an end to Crusade. (Staff,

First And Fourth Crusades Comparison Essay
Many have priorly stated that history repeats itself time and time again. This can be seen throughout
history but, especially so during the Crusades. This paper will discuss the parallels between the First
and Fourth Crusade. We will also take a brief look at the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade and how it
compares to the aftermath of the Second Crusade. The First Crusade was launched in 1095 by Pope
Urban II in response to a call for aid by the Byzantines. The resulting army swept through Asia
Minor and into the Near East conquering several cities along the way. Upon the successful
conquering of the region, the crusaders divide the land among themselves forming four crusader
states: County of Edessa, Principality of Antioch, County of Tripoli, and the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
This takeover and dividing of territory is incredibly similar to what occurs in the fourth crusade.
Upon conquering Constantinople in April of 1204, the crusaders proceed to divide the land among
themselves much like they did earlier. They divided the land ... Show more content on

This crusade would grant remission of sin to those who undertook the crusade. Harris again remarks
on the similarities, "The reaction in the papal curia when news arrived that Constantinople had
fallen was much the same as it had been when Jerusalem had been lost to Saladin in 1187" (pg 195
2nd Edition). Pope Urban IV justifies this new crusade by saying that without Constantinople, the
way to Jerusalem was blocked and any efforts to retake the Holy Land would fail. This call to
crusade is similar to the one that launches the Third Crusade led by Richard Coeur de Lion to retake
Jerusalem. However, here these parallels end. Unlike in the Third Crusade, Pope Urban IV's call for
crusade fails and no armies are sent forth. At least none that could constitute a strict crusade due to a
lack of promised remission of

Jerusalem By Saladin
The Capture of Jerusalem by Saladin A Crusade is military excursions made by Western European
Christians during the late eleventh century through the late thirteenth century. Crusades offered
peasants an escape from the brutal Feudal System, because peasants who took up the cross were
freed from feudal obligations. Pope Urban II sought to unite the European Christians, to increase
personal power, to counter the rising power of Seljuk Turks, and to provide pilgrimage to the Holy
Land. Peter the Hermit, instigator of the Crusades, spread Crusade fever preaching all over France

the crusaders. However, a series of provocations by the Crusaders broke the truce by attacking trade

Kingdom of Jerusalem. Although the Crusader army was similar in size to Saladin's army, Saladin
had various advantages because he knew the climate and terrain, used better tactics, and was
militarily organized. On the other hand, The Crusades were divided and the King was easily

about Jerusalem and the Holy Land, or Palestine, have a complicated history. The Holy Land sits at
the intersection of three continents, near the birthplace of some of the world's oldest civilizations. It
also borders the Mediterranean Sea, a major artery of conquest and trade. The region is valued as
much for its location as for its religious history. The location itself may have been reason enough for
people to settle there. In turn, those people developed civilizations that gave rise to the religions that
have spent centuries competing for the sacred soil. The three competing monotheistic faiths–
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam–met in Jerusalem. Despite their common roots, the differences
among the three religions–and their peoples–often sparked conflict. 2. For centuries, Christian
pilgrims from Europe had been making the long, dangerous journey to the Holy Land. There, they
visited shrines such as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Under early Islamic empires, Christians
were allowed to make this pilgrimage. Then, in the early 11th century, the Seljuk Turks conquered
the Holy Land. The Seljuk Turks closed the pilgrimage routes and attacked Christian pilgrims. They
also attacked Christian lands held by the Byzantines in Anatolia. 3. It's 1096 and the first Crusaders,

Phillip and Richard's relationship was damaged by the crusade. On his return back to France, King
Philip wanted to use Richard's absence at the crusade, to take back his land in France which was
under English rule but he had sworn an oath halting him from doing so. He tried to break the oath by
going to the Church and providing false documents that King Richard had a secret meeting with
Saladin without the Church's permission. The Church did not believe him and refused to release him
from his oath. This led to King Philip attacking Richard's territories once Richard returned from the
crusade. It led to a seven year war till Richard died in 1199. Richard's brother, John, became the new
king. The Anglo–French war of 1202–14 was another effect of the crusade as it led to more fighting
in the Normandy area and John, King of England fought King Philip II of France for control. The
tension was created due to the not so great relationship between King Richard and King Philip

Causes Of The Crusades
The Crusades was two centuries of intermittent warfare throughout the Middle Ages where the
Christians of Europe tried to take back control of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the Muslims
between 1095 and 1291, the stated motive was to recover the Holy Land from Muslim forces, when
it came to a final point it would be seen that the Crusades encouraged expansion of trade and
learning in Europe's development. On November 1095, Pope Urban II calls out the First Crusade, to
their success the First Crusade was a big victory. The beginning of the Crusades was a grand call for
Pope Urban II, afterwards the rest of the Crusades were a significant failure. By the end of the 11th
century, Western Europe had come out as a sizeable power in its personal right, despite the fact that
they fell again at the back of different Mediterranean civilizations, such as the eastern half of the
Roman Empire, referred to as the Byzantine Empire, and the Islamic Empire of the center east and
north Africa. Nevertheless, Byzantium lost a significant part of the territory because of the truth that
the Seljuk Turks invaded. After years of chaotic civil wars, in 1098 Alexius Comnenus was in
control of the Byzantine throne and controlled over the rest of the empire, he become referred to as
Emperor Alexius I. Alexius got a Turkish threat, in 1095 he sent envoys to Pope inquiring for troops

Fourth To Sixth Crusade Summary
The Fourth to Sixth Crusade
The Fourth Crusade began in 1198, due to conflict for controls for power between Europe and
Byzantium. This changed the Crusader's mission of reclaiming Jerusalem from Egypt's command, to
overthrow Alexius IV, whose attempts to submit the Byzantine Church to Rome was met with
hostility in 1204. While he was placed in palace coup, war was waged on Constantinople, with the
Fourth Crusade ending with the subjugation and ransacking of the Byzantine capital later that year.
Following the capture of Constantinople, valuable art work, statues and other treasures were pilfered
or wrecked. The Byzantine Empire never really recovered from the ransack caused by the war. The
Fourth Crusade deeply angered Pope Innocent III, as the Crusaders had attacked their own fellow
Christians. The Crusaders were by now unpopular and had yet to achieve their initial goal of
regaining control of Jerusalem.
Before his death in 1216, Pope Innocent III commissioned the Fifth Crusade to accomplish the
mission of the Fourth, to free Jerusalem from Egyptian command. The Crusaders travelled to Acre
in 1217 and joined the ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, King John was aware that attacking
Jerusalem while Egypt was at full strength was not possible, so they collectively planned to take
Egypt under Latin control, thus forcing the Muslims ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Purposes Of The Crusades
The Crusades were military fights lead by Western European Christians from 1096 to 1270. In 1096
military campaigns began to spread the religion and to wrest the Holy Land from the Muslim, these
campaigns, involving often ruthless battles, are known as the Crusades. The principle purpose of the
Crusades, was to recover Holy Land from the Muslims. In November of 1095, pope Urban II gave a
sermon that would be the beginning of the Crusades. The First Crusade had a very important impact
in Medieval England, it started as an attempt to get back Jerusalem. In 1076 the Muslims captured
Jerusalem, any Christian who wanted to visit the Holy Land faced great danger. In 1095, Urban

Bernard of Clairvaux, and Louis VII, gathered together in Constantinople in 1147, to create a plan to
recover the County of Edessa. This was the first time that two kings joined forces. The plan was to
cross to Anatolia in order to destroy the Turkish armies that had been seen the year prior, while the
ultimate aim of the crusade was to recover the County of Edessa, secure the pilgrim pass and
provide reinforcements to Jerusalem. The latter was at risk because the vast majority of knights had
died since the First Crusade. In 1189, the Third Crusade took place after Jerusalem was taken, it was
proclaimed by Pope Gregory VIII. This crusade was dominated by the two main lead, Saladin and
Richard the Lionheart. Crusaders managed to conquer some of Saladin's holdings along the
Mediterranean coastline, but failed to get back Jerusalem. In 1201, a Fourth Crusade was organized
but was beset with financial troubles, leading to the diversion of the Crusaders from the original
destination of Egypt to Constantinople, which was conquered by the Turks.

King Baldwin IV: The Upheavalric Code Of Christianity
The crusades were a time of great upheaval in the world. The Kingdom of Heaven, Jerusalem, was
the centerpiece of the crusades between the Christians and Muslims. As stated in Daniel 2:44, "In
the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed...".
Despite the movie straying from actual events in history, it did however show some factual events.
King Baldwin IV was a true example of Christian chivalry. He was a man who understood suffering,
the Church, and the principles behind the chivalric code of Christianity. Baldwin became king when
his father died suddenly in 1174, he was only 13 at the time. When Baldwin was playing as a child

Since that day many people, not just American citizen believe that all Arabians were atrocious
terrorists. Whilst the Kingdom of Heaven portrays Christians in a negative light and Muslims in a
positive one, could it be in good will to prove that not all Arabians are awful people and that we
shouldn't hold grudges? One can believe so because there are many time in the movie when Saladin
showed forgiveness and respect towards the Christians and their beliefs. A clear example of when
Saladin showed respect and forgiveness towards the Christians was when he stated some terms and
promised to not hurt any Christian, if he was to take Jerusalem back, even after everything the
Christians did to the Muslims. "No–one will be harmed, I swear to God" (Saladin) "Christians
butchered every Muslim inside the walls when they took the city" (Balian) "I am not those men, I
am Saladin" (Saladin). This scene was not historically accurate because Saladin would only let the
wealthy Christian which could afford to pay to leave actually leave and the ones that could would
became his slaves, but when making a pro–Muslim movie this fact cannot be added. Instead this
scene proved that Saladin was the bigger person because he didn't hold onto grudges from the past
and want revenge them, he just want Jerusalem back and peace amongst them [Muslims] and the

The Unrevealed Truth
In this essay I will be summarizing the myths to the truths, of the movie Kingdom of Heaven to the
real life history facts. Therefore Hollywood changed the facts to myths. I will be focusing on the
longbow creation, relationships, and killing Arabs. In the movie Kingdom of Heaven, the longbow
was used in the time of the movie. Unfortunately the longbow was really invented around 1180
C.E.. Created by the Celts in Wales. Which the longbow was not really used by the English military
until the 1300s. A longbow is a an incredibly strong piece of wood roughly 6 feet tall and 5/8 inch
wide. The longbow started becoming a great, well known weapon. The Hundred Years War was
where the longbow really showed its strength. In some of the war's most decisive battles the
longbow was the weapon that turned the tides. One memorable example: The Battle of Crecy War.
Relationships in the movie Kingdom of Heaven was not one hundred percent accurate. There is

The Crusades were a series of Holy Wars launched between 1095 and 1291 by the Christian states of

Therefore, the reports are probably only very approximate ideas of what the Pope actually said. The
Pope's impassioned speech in which he demonises the Moslems, appears to be a mastery in flattery,
hyperbole, and misuse of Scripture. On the other hand, Haag (2011: 75–78) strongly argues that the
Pope would never have stooped to lurid rabble rousing, neither did he intend to whip up a mass
movement of peasantry because his desirable instruments for the Crusade were the knights. Also, it
looks to me that the Pope took it as his divine duty to forcibly remove from the holy places of
Jerusalem those who had profaned them, similar to the way Jesus drove the money changers from
the holy Temple. The Pope promised the warriors immediate entry to heaven if they died on The
Crusade, doing away with any necessity of penance after death (MacCulloch 2009: 384). These
papal grants are unquestionably similar to the later papal indulgences that were a bone of contention
by Martin Luther during the Reformation. However, it seems that the warriors believed The
Crusades to be a spiritual war to purify their souls of sin. For why else would a person risk
everything by travelling to a distant land were they may never return? Of course, the desire to better

Europe to clam the holy land. With the most important being the land of Jerusalem. This bloody
struggle continued for roughly two centuries completely altering the region and its views. The first
crusades were in 1095 and were ignited by Pope Urban II. The year 1095 B.C. was the hit of the
Christian churches influence on the people. The church was corrupt and wanted more power and
influence. The churches major appeal was to sinners throw the promise that their sins would be
forgiven if you went on the crusade. Not only were all of your sins forgiven but also there was a
chance you could get fame and fortune from going on crusade. This lure of treasure and salvation
snared tens of thousands of people to go on "pilgrimage". The crusades were fundamentally
different then any war in the past. Regular wars were fought over land, resources, or even just a
grudge. The crusades were fought for an idea of religious salvation and symbolic religious paces.
The crusades were a holy war that pressed the Christian

The Principal Crusades
The Crusades were a series of Holy Wars launched by the Christian states of Europe against the
Saracens and the rescuing of holy places of Palestine from the hands of the Mohammedans. (Alchin
1) There were eight Crusades in number; the first four were sometimes called the Principal
Crusades, and the remaining four were the called the Minor Crusades. (Alchin 1) The Principal
Crusades, however, were considered to be the most important. (Alchin 1) The Principal Crusades
started because of key people or key events, which led to affect history. Every crusade contained key
people, which helped spark the crusades, or contained key leaders that were important in conquering
them. The first impulse to the Crusade came from an appeal of ... Show more content on

(Alchin 6) Then the grand assault came. The first assault made by the Christians upon the walls of
the city was repulsed; but the second was successful, and the city was in the hands of the crusaders
by July 1099. (Alchin 7) Once inside the city, the crusaders massacred their enemies without mercy.
(Alchin 7)
The fall and massacre of the city of Edessa sparked the second crusade. In the year 1146, the city of
Edessa, the bulwark of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem on the side towards Mesopotamia, was
taken by the Turks, and the entire population was slaughtered, or sold into slavery. (Alchin 9) This
disaster threw the entire West into a state of the greatest alarm, lest the little Christian state and all
the holy places should again fall into the hands of the infidels. (Alchin 9) The second crusade,
though begun under the most favorable auspices, had an unhappy ending. (Alchin 12) Of the great
host that set out from Europe, only a few thousands escaped annihilation in Asia Minor at the hands
of the Turks. (Alchin 12) Louis and Conrad, with the remnants of their armies, made a joint attack
on Damascus, but had to raise the siege after a few days. (Alchin 12) This closed the second
crusade.
The capture of Jerusalem by Saladin stimulated the third crusade. Having made himself sultan of
Egypt, Saladin united the Moslems of Syria under his sway and then advanced against the Latin
Kingdom of Jerusalem.

Crusades Dbq

  • 1. Crusades Dbq The crusades were a bunch of wars in the Middle Ages when the Christians and Europeans tried to retake control of Jerusalem from the Muslims. Jerusalem was important to Muslims during the Middle Ages because it was believed to be where Muhammad ascended to heaven. The Christians found it important because it was believed to be where Jesus Christ was crucified and rose again. The first crusade began in 1095. Four armies formed troops of different Western European regions, all led by Raymond of Saint Gilles, Godfrey of Bouillon, Hugh of Vermandios, and Bohemond of Taranto with his nephew Tancred). When they arrived in Constantinople, Alexius made their leader swear an oath of loyalty to him, but Bohemond refused to take the oath. May 1097, crusaders and Byzantine attacked Nicea, which is now Turkey, the city surrendered in June. In June 1098, despite the conflicts happening between the Crusaders and Byzantine leaders, they fought together in Anatolia, taking the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1187, Saladin began a huge campaign against the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. his troops basically destroyed the Christian army at the battle of Hattin, taking the city along with a large amount of territory. Outrage over these defeats fired up the Third Crusade, led by the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, King Philip II of France and King Richard I of England. In September 1191, Richard's forces defeated those of Saladin in the battle of Arsuf; it was the only true battle of the Third Crusade. From the city of Jaffa, Richard reestablished control over some of the region and approached Jerusalem, though he refused to lay siege to the city. • 3. Crusades Dbq Essay After the First Crusade in 1096, Christian kingdoms were very upset. By 1144, a Mamluk general, Imad–ed–din Zangi, had succeeded in uniting enough Turks and Arabs in his army to attack the Christian kingdoms. Zangi did not take Jerusalem, but he did take the Syrian city of Edessa nearby. In Europe, people were very upset when they heard that the Turks had taken Edessa. The Pope (Pope Eugene III) ordered Bernard of Clair Vaux (in France) to preach a second crusade to take it back and defeat Zangi. The young king of France, Louis VII, agreed to go, along with the queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Conrad III of Germany, the Holy Roman Emperor. Below is a map of the route they took and where they had their major battles. A map showing the path the crusaders took during battle. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the time, this was a popular Christian view, because most of the population were lowly educated and were highly influenced by the Church. The Muslim's perspective was not documented as well as the Christian's perspective was. Although, the Muslims also believed that Jerusalem was rightfully theirs as the place had a religious connotation for them, as Mohammed travelled to the mosque that was furthest from Mecca. Now that we know more, we learnt that this war involved politics and was benefitting rulers and giving them more power, as supported by the quote above. Another fact that we now know is that the war also involved revenge, betrayal and greed, as the Pope and King were both trying to keep and raise their own power. An example of this was how the Pope called the second crusade because Zangi took Edessa and the Pope wanted the land back, so he called it a religious war to persuade people fight for him. This reinforces the fact that the Pope uses the influence of God on the majority of people, to make them do things for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Fall Of The City Of Jerusalem Triston Janise 2–8–15 Coach Wade World history The fall of Jerusalem. There are many reasons for the fall of the city of Jerusalem. Some of those reasons being that the defenders of the city were completely out–numbered by Saladin's army, the weakness of the city's walls, a long siege by Saladin's army, and the collapse of the Kingdom of Jerusalem itself. When Saladin's army approached the city of Jerusalem the defenders of the city was starchily out numbered. The cause of this was the fact that in a previous battle now known as the battle of Hattin the Jerusalem force of 16200 men were completely decimated by Saladin's force of 42000 men. The reason for this great defeat at the hands of Saladin's army was poor leadership. The new king of Jerusalem Guy was bent on attacking Saladin's army as soon as possible. This caused the new king to leave the city of Jerusalem with most of its defenders. After he left the city is where he made his biggest military blunder. He made camp with his army at the first watering hole outside of Jerusalem. Guy and his army however did not stay long. They soon moved out in search of Saladin's army this was his fatal mistake. Instead of staying at his original camp where he and his army had a good supply of water he made a brash decision and decided to march his army in the pursuit of Saladin's army. His original camp was the only source of water for many miles. With this decision to march without a good supply of water he made his army very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The First Crusades First Crusade There once was a time where religion ruled the world, where the people of that religion would go to any lengths to protect it, and even give up their lives to their beloved god. This tale is a great representative of the determination and wholeheartedness of the followers of a certain belief. This is about the Crusaders, on their quest to take back the Holy land, for their god, called the First Crusades. A group of Turkish Muslims would go to any lengths to keep the Christian pilgrims from visiting their Holy Land. This worried Alexis I, a Christian king, because the Turks had already captured parts of his empire and were only 30 miles away from capturing his capitol. He knew he needed help so he turned to Pope Gregory and asked him to find people to aid in the fight against Muslims, but he didn't agree, and died, passing his position on to the next pope named Pope Urban II, who was very excited about going to war and ended up giving a speech. At the end of the speech, the pilgrims cheered,"God wills it!" he gained many troops. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They continued their march, taking Antioch in a nine month siege, and stopping in Agra, causing the commanders and the generals of the army to disagree about whether or not to take Arga. • 11. Why Did The First Crusade Happen The first Crusade was an event that happened between the times of 1096–1099 and played a very important part in Medieval England. The reason that the First Crusade happened was because they were trying to capture Jerusalem from the Muslims. They didn't want the Muslims to have Jerusalem because it belonged to the Christians. The First Crusade was a major event that happened and it still talked about today. Jerusalem was captured by the Muslims, Christians were mad about this when they found out. Many people also volunteered to fight on the First Crusade. An important person of the event was Alexius l of Constantinople because he was scared that his country might fall under the Muslims. He also needed help with this so he called the Pope, Urban ll, to tell him what was going on with what was happening on the First Crusade and to ask if he could help him. In 1095, Urban ll spoke out to a crowd and France and called for a war against the Muslims so that Jerusalem could be regained to the Christians and in his speech he said: "If you are killed your sins will be pardoned." In the beginning, he is seen in France, at the grave of his wife, who had committed suicide after the death of their children. The crusaders come to France, and offer a position with them to Balian. At first, he does not want to go, but after killing a man, he catches up with the crusaders and joins them in their battles. He meets, and eventually falls in love with the Queen, Sybilla. He goes through many battles, and eventually ends it all with a truce with Saladin. In the following paragraphs, I will now explain to you the inaccuracies of this movie. My first topic is on Balian. To start off, he was not, and never lived, in France. In result, he never needed to catch up with the crusaders, being that he was already living in Jerusalem. The opening of the movie is him with his wife's grave, praying, because she had committed suicide. In reality, she never did. Balian was shown as an illegitimate child, not knowing his father. ... There was actually a lot more to it than just saying words, there was training involved in this. Balian was asked by one man, Bishop, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, if making a man a knight a better fighter, to which he replied, 'Yes'. The actual process would begin when the boy was 7, all the way up to the age of 21. The article 'Becoming a Knight' states that "Knighthood training was a long and often arduous process" (Alchin). This is showing that those men could not have even gotten a fraction of the training other knights had gotten in that short of a period of time–from being knighted to the start of the fighting at the ... • 15. The Causes Of The Crusades In case you didn't know the Crusades are a series of battles fought around 1096 to 1291. Now you may be thinking why were the Crusades fought. Well, the Crusades were fought for control of the Holy Land. They were a series of religious and political wars to gain control of Jerusalem, which was important to Christians, Jews and Muslims. " It was important to Jewish people as it was the site of the of the original temple to God built by King Solomon." (http://www.ducksters.com/history/middle_ages_crusades.php). Muslims believed it was where Muhammad ascended to heaven and it was where Christ was crucified and rose again so was an important place also for Christians. In June 1098, Jerusalem fell. Why? Well there were lots of struggles in Antioch because of the combined forces of the Byzantine and the Crusaders. They continued to walk to Jerusalem. The Byzantines and the Crusaders were also joined by the Egyptian Fatimids. In 1099 the governor of the Jerusalem had to bow down and leave his position as Governor. The Crusaders slaughtered many men and women in the fall of Jerusalem. The components of the fall of Jerusalem When did Byzantine and The Crusaders start working together? On Nov. 27, 1095, Pope Urban II said that the Crusaders needed to help the Byzantine. Why? Well to take back Jerusalem of course! • 17. Kingdom Of Heaven Analysis The movie "Kingdom of Heaven" tries to portray the crusades that occurred in the 12th century while at the same time describing the middle age era. Some of the movie content contains truth of that period as well as fiction. The movie follows Balian of Ibelin and his journey from being a blacksmith to defender of Jerusalem. Although the movie has manipulated some of the real events to appeal to a broader audience, make it more Hollywood like, it does a decent job in portraying the battle over Jerusalem and some of the circumstances around it. The church played a significant role during the middle ages. In fact, the church reached the height of its power in the high middle ages: the 11th, 12th, 13th centuries. It was during this period that the crusade battles occurred. The movie tries to portray the events that led to one of the battles, the Battle of Hattin 1187. The idea that "God wills war" was apparent in both the movie and real life. Crusaders became consumed with fighting and killing the Muslims which was clear in Guy de Lusignan and Reynald de Chatilon actions. On the other hand, Baldwin and Balian, in the movie, represented the crusaders who wanted to maintain a peaceful relationship between the Muslims and the Christians. Another concept that appears in the movie that is linked to reality is the ideas of becoming a crusader in order to repent your sins. One of the main reason why Balian became a crusader is to repent his sin, of killing a priest, and his wife ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. The World Of The Crusades These past few weeks, everyone in the tenth grade has been learning about the crusades. The people, weapons, food, diseases, and technological advances (or disadvantages since it was the Dark Age) were all taught to us and now it is time to put it to the test. We learned that the crusades affected all three religions that have ties to Jerusalem, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. We watched Kingdom of Heaven, a historical fiction movie based on the crusades. The time of the story that we see is based between the second and third crusade. Although the movie had many historically correct parts, there were also a lot of inaccuracies. My job is to show you the inaccuracies and what would have actually happened during that time if that crusade had actually happened. I will be touching the topics of weaponry and how they used it, who Balian actually is, and what people actually knew during that time period. First off, I want to touch on the topic of weaponry and how they used it. During the movie, Kingdom of Heaven, they show trebuchets hurtling firing rocks at the walls to Jerusalem, horses armor, and they show Balian being able to fight and kill one Islamic servant after only one training session with his father, Baron Godfrey. Although this makes for a dramatic and exciting film, it just is not accurate and that makes many historians just shake their heads. Trebuchets were a big way of fighting in the 12th century. • 21. The Crusades Failure The Crusades were a series of holy wars that played out between 1095 and 1291 C.E. The Crusades officially began during the 11th century in the Council of Claymont when Pope Urban II called for the first crusade. The reason why the people joined him was because the goal of the Crusades was to claim the holy city of Jerusalem. There were many crusades that followed, most of them unsuccessful. The Crusades were a series of holy wars brought about in an effort to bring unity between Christians against the Seljuk Turks, their goal to claim the holy land resulted in failure, however, the Crusades shed some light on what life was like in medieval Europe. Initially, the Crusades began in an effort to bring people together against the Seljuk Turks. Alexius Comnenus, the Byzantine emperor, asked Pope Urban II to call for a crusade. Emperor Alexius and Pope Urban II had started the Crusades in an effort to gain power. Pope Urban II would gain power if people united under him, "[Pope Urban II] wanted to unite Europe... People still were not convinced until Pope Urban II offered absolution for their sins, "Undertake this journey eagerly for the remission for your sins, and be assured of the reward of imperishable glory in the kingdom of heaven," (Rice 14). Compare And Contrast Kingdom Of Heaven Blake Gravis Coach Wade World History 9 February, 2015 Compare and contrast of Jerusalem in 1187 and "Kingdom of Heaven": The movie "Kingdom of Heaven", has many historical facts, but then again has many historical inaccuracies. Geography, religion, religious tolerance by Bailian before the battle of Jerusalem, and the battle for Jerusalem itself. While some of this is historically accurate most of it is a Hollywood remixes of historical facts. The geography of the movie was wrong, because it was filmed in Spain and Morocco not in Jerusalem where everything actually happened. We all know that Jerusalem is not near the Sahara Desert like it shows in the movie. After Balian of Ibelin left his job as blacksmith but before he met his unknown crusader father, he became shipwrecked on the coast of Israel. He walked through the Sahara desert on his route to the Holy city which is not what the coast of Israel is like. Balian was never a blacksmith and did not have to travel to the Holy Land because he grew up in Jerusalem. Jerusalem mainly consists of hills but is not mountainous. Saladin defeated the Christians at the shore of Lake Tiberius but since it was filmed in the desert the battle was a waterless fight. When Balian noticed his land had no ... Its lone success in the long line of Crusades proves its uniqueness among the six others that were mostly ineffective. Certain fortunate circumstances definitely contributed to the Christian success in taking the Holy Land on their first try. Similarly, many other circumstances were responsible for why the following crusades were less successful and in some cases disastrous. From the first crusade being a holy pilgrimage for military and religious reasons, the following crusades were for personal gain, power, and wealth. The crusaders' pride for Christianity transcended their nationalism and motivated tens of thousands of people to journey across Europe to the Middle East. This religious pride inspired enough people, many who had never even left their homes, to travel to a foreign land that they had only heard of through stories and in the Bible (Ethics–War). In their eyes, they were rightfully reclaiming their religion's land and retaking the land where their savior lived and died. To the early Crusaders, taking back the Holy Land was only the beginning in the line of liberating Spain, southeastern Europe, and other Christian lands that the Muslims began to fight for (Whittemore). In addition to helping fellow Christians, the Pope promised the Crusaders that in return for fighting for their religion they would be forgiven of all their sins and were assured to enter heaven. Before the First Crusade, Pope Urban II traveled across Europe to speak out to the Christian population. This is also one of the first recorded times in European history in which the pope actively traveled outside the Vatican to speak to the average Christian European (Urban II). After Louis and Conrad figured out how to collect their armed forces at Jerusalem, they chose to assault the Syrian fortification of Damascus with a multitude of approximately 50,000 (the biggest Crusader constrain yet). Already very much arranged towards the Franks, Damascus' ruler was compelled to approach Nur al–Din, Zangi's successor in Mosul, for help. • 29. The Importance Of The Christian Crusades For centuries, religion has played an important role throughout history by having the power to unite individuals, towns, kingdoms, or even countries. By giving people something to believe in, it gives them a "purpose in life", because life without purpose would be boring and dull. An example of this unity was the Christian Crusades during the Middle Ages. The Crusades were a chain of Christian military campaigns against the Turkish Muslims that occupied the holy land, Jerusalem, which lasted from 1095 to 1291. These Christian crusades all started because of Pope Urban II's call to unify all Christians from France and the Holy Roman Empire and to retake Jerusalem from the Muslims. The main reason that united Western Europe was when the Seljuk Turks invaded the Byzantine Empire and captured a big portion of the kingdom. During the chaos of the invasion, Alexius Comnenus, an army general, was able to seize the royal throne and consolidate his power and control over the last remaining pieces of the empire as the new emperor. As a last attempt, Alexius called out to Pope Urban II for assistance in retaking the Byzantine Empire and Jerusalem from Muslim control. When Urban II heard about the Turk's slowly advancing through Europe, he called for a meeting in the Council of Clermont, which gathered hundreds of clerics, nobles, and peasants. • 31. Analysis Of The Film Kingdom Of Heaven It cannot be denied the role popular culture plays in the the public's knowledge and understanding of historical events. For a portion of the population once schooling ends, historical films become the main way people are exposed to history. Because of this it is vital to understand the benefits that are provided by these historical films and how they impact the way viewers think about the past and the world they live in today. The 2005 film "Kingdom of Heaven," directed by Ridley Scott, is a prime example of popular culture being able to educate the public about the Crusades and Muslim/Christian relationships of the past. Two cuts of this film exist. The theatrical cut is 140 minutes long and tells the basic story of Crusader Balian of Ibelin, Muslim leader Saladin, and the fall of Jerusalem during the Third Crusade. The director's cut, released in 2006, is 192 minutes long and fills in some of the gaps of the story the theatrical cut was missing. While the film contains many historical inaccuracies, it promotes historical truths that needed to be heard in the world at the time of its release and still today. Some of the historical inaccuracies include the gross mishandling of Balian's story. His location of birth, family, and occupation are changed and a romance between Balian and Sybilla, the sister of the King of Jerusalem is invented for the film. The real Balian of Ibelin was born in the Holy Land to a noble family while the fictional Balian is the French–born bastard son of a knight who was trained as a blacksmith. Some of these changes to Balian's character were made to allow for the audience to be introduced to the Holy Land and the Crusades through his eyes, as stated in the featurette titled, "Creative Accuracy: The Scholars Speak," included with the director's cut of the film. Because of these changes, people's interpretation of class status and social mobility in the Middle Ages is misrepresented giving viewers a false understanding of how social status in these societies affected someone's occupational prospects. Another anachrony is that the character of Sybilla is allowed to do things that women in the Middle Ages would not have been allowed to do such as travelling with only a ... Pre Ap World History : The Crusades Patrick Chen Mr. Franklin Pre–AP World History 26 November, 2014 The Crusades The Crusades began in 1095, when Christian armies from Western Europe reacted to Pope Urban II's wish to go to war against the Muslim armies. The Christian army wore the cross made with red blood cloth to symbolize their religion. The Crusades took place between 1095 and 1291 and the goal was to stop the spread of Islam, to control of the Holy Land, to conquer pagan places, and to recapture Christian territories. Two–thirds of the ancient Christian world had been conquered by Muslims by the end of the 11th century but the Crusades, attempting to check this advance, initially enjoyed success, founding a Christian state in Palestine and Syria, but the continued growth of Islamic states denied those gains. There were a total of 11 official crusades in all. Only the First and Third Crusades were successful in achieving their main goal. In the long history of the Crusades, thousands of knights, soldiers, merchants, and peasants lost their lives on the march or in battle. But even though only the First and Third Crusades were successful in reclaiming parts of the Holy Land, the Crusades played an important role in the expansion of Europe. The Crusaders faced a multitude of obstacles. The Christians wanted to convert Muslims to Christianity. It was debated whether Christians did the crusades to gain power or solely to convert Muslims. The first crusade happened between the years of 1096 and 1099. "Most historians consider the sermon preached by Pope Urban II at Clermont–Ferrand in November 1095 to have been the spark that fueled a wave of military campaigns to wrest the Holy Land from Muslim control" (The Crusades(1095–1291) |Essay|). "The bloody, violent and often ruthless conflicts propelled the status of European Christians, making them major players in the fight for land in the Middle East" (History.com Staff). The Christians took over the Holy Land also known in present day as Jerusalem. By taking control they prevented the Seljuk Turks expanding. Pope Urban II ordered 4 nobles to lead 30,000 crusaders to fight through Anatolia and head to Palestine. They took Antioch, surrounded Jerusalem and got over the walls. A traitor had led them through the city walls. They killed any Jews or Muslims in these two cities. The ones they let live were sold into slavery. This can be seen throughout history but, especially so during the Crusades. This paper will discuss the parallels between the First and Fourth Crusade. We will also take a brief look at the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade and how it compares to the aftermath of the Second Crusade. The First Crusade was launched in 1095 by Pope Urban II in response to a call for aid by the Byzantines. The resulting army swept through Asia Minor and into the Near East conquering several cities along the way. Upon the successful conquering of the region, the crusaders divide the land among themselves forming four crusader states: County of Edessa, Principality of Antioch, County of Tripoli, and the Kingdom of Jerusalem. This takeover and dividing of territory is incredibly similar to what occurs in the fourth crusade. Just in case you guys don't about the history of why the crusades are happening, it's all about Jerusalem and the Holy Land, or Palestine, have a complicated history. The Holy Land sits at the intersection of three continents, near the birthplace of some of the world's oldest civilizations. It also borders the Mediterranean Sea, a major artery of conquest and trade. The region is valued as much for its location as for its religious history. The location itself may have been reason enough for people to settle there. In turn, those people developed civilizations that gave rise to the religions that have spent centuries competing for the sacred soil. The three competing monotheistic faiths– Judaism, Christianity, and Islam–met in Jerusalem. Despite their common roots, the differences among the three religions–and their peoples–often sparked conflict. 2. On his return back to France, King Philip wanted to use Richard's absence at the crusade, to take back his land in France which was under English rule but he had sworn an oath halting him from doing so. He tried to break the oath by going to the Church and providing false documents that King Richard had a secret meeting with Saladin without the Church's permission. The Church did not believe him and refused to release him from his oath. This led to King Philip attacking Richard's territories once Richard returned from the crusade. It led to a seven year war till Richard died in 1199. Richard's brother, John, became the new king. The Anglo–French war of 1202–14 was another effect of the crusade as it led to more fighting in the Normandy area and John, King of England fought King Philip II of France for control. The tension was created due to the not so great relationship between King Richard and King Philip during the Third Crusade and also the tension between the Church and France. • 55. Causes Of The Crusades The Crusades was two centuries of intermittent warfare throughout the Middle Ages where the Christians of Europe tried to take back control of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the Muslims between 1095 and 1291, the stated motive was to recover the Holy Land from Muslim forces, when it came to a final point it would be seen that the Crusades encouraged expansion of trade and learning in Europe's development. On November 1095, Pope Urban II calls out the First Crusade, to their success the First Crusade was a big victory. The beginning of the Crusades was a grand call for Pope Urban II, afterwards the rest of the Crusades were a significant failure. By the end of the 11th century, Western Europe had come out as a sizeable power in its personal right, despite the fact that they fell again at the back of different Mediterranean civilizations, such as the eastern half of the Roman Empire, referred to as the Byzantine Empire, and the Islamic Empire of the center east and north Africa. Nevertheless, Byzantium lost a significant part of the territory because of the truth that the Seljuk Turks invaded. After years of chaotic civil wars, in 1098 Alexius Comnenus was in control of the Byzantine throne and controlled over the rest of the empire, he become referred to as Emperor Alexius I. • 57. Fourth To Sixth Crusade Summary The Fourth to Sixth Crusade The Fourth Crusade began in 1198, due to conflict for controls for power between Europe and Byzantium. This changed the Crusader's mission of reclaiming Jerusalem from Egypt's command, to overthrow Alexius IV, whose attempts to submit the Byzantine Church to Rome was met with hostility in 1204. While he was placed in palace coup, war was waged on Constantinople, with the Fourth Crusade ending with the subjugation and ransacking of the Byzantine capital later that year. Following the capture of Constantinople, valuable art work, statues and other treasures were pilfered or wrecked. The Byzantine Empire never really recovered from the ransack caused by the war. The Fourth Crusade deeply angered Pope Innocent III, as the Crusaders had attacked their own fellow Christians. The Crusaders were by now unpopular and had yet to achieve their initial goal of regaining control of Jerusalem. Before his death in 1216, Pope Innocent III commissioned the Fifth Crusade to accomplish the mission of the Fourth, to free Jerusalem from Egyptian command. • 59. The Purposes Of The Crusades The Crusades were military fights lead by Western European Christians from 1096 to 1270. In 1096 military campaigns began to spread the religion and to wrest the Holy Land from the Muslim, these campaigns, involving often ruthless battles, are known as the Crusades. The principle purpose of the Crusades, was to recover Holy Land from the Muslims. In November of 1095, pope Urban II gave a sermon that would be the beginning of the Crusades. The First Crusade had a very important impact in Medieval England, it started as an attempt to get back Jerusalem. In 1076 the Muslims captured Jerusalem, any Christian who wanted to visit the Holy Land faced great danger. In 1095, Urban spoke to a great crowd at Clermont in France. Bernard of Clairvaux, and Louis VII, gathered together in Constantinople in 1147, to create a plan to recover the County of Edessa. This was the first time that two kings joined forces. The plan was to cross to Anatolia in order to destroy the Turkish armies that had been seen the year prior, while the ultimate aim of the crusade was to recover the County of Edessa, secure the pilgrim pass and provide reinforcements to Jerusalem. The latter was at risk because the vast majority of knights had died since the First Crusade. In 1189, the Third Crusade took place after Jerusalem was taken, it was proclaimed by Pope Gregory VIII. This crusade was dominated by the two main lead, Saladin and Richard the Lionheart. Crusaders managed to conquer some of Saladin's holdings along the Mediterranean coastline, but failed to get back Jerusalem. The Kingdom of Heaven, Jerusalem, was the centerpiece of the crusades between the Christians and Muslims. As stated in Daniel 2:44, "In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed...". Despite the movie straying from actual events in history, it did however show some factual events. King Baldwin IV was a true example of Christian chivalry. He was a man who understood suffering, the Church, and the principles behind the chivalric code of Christianity. Baldwin became king when his father died suddenly in 1174, he was only 13 at the time. Whilst the Kingdom of Heaven portrays Christians in a negative light and Muslims in a positive one, could it be in good will to prove that not all Arabians are awful people and that we shouldn't hold grudges? One can believe so because there are many time in the movie when Saladin showed forgiveness and respect towards the Christians and their beliefs. A clear example of when Saladin showed respect and forgiveness towards the Christians was when he stated some terms and promised to not hurt any Christian, if he was to take Jerusalem back, even after everything the Christians did to the Muslims. "No–one will be harmed, I swear to God" (Saladin) "Christians butchered every Muslim inside the walls when they took the city" (Balian) "I am not those men, I am Saladin" (Saladin). This scene was not historically accurate because Saladin would only let the wealthy Christian which could afford to pay to leave actually leave and the ones that could would became his slaves, but when making a pro–Muslim movie this fact cannot be added. Instead this scene proved that Saladin was the bigger person because he didn't hold onto grudges from the past and want revenge them, he just want Jerusalem back and peace amongst them [Muslims] and the Christian. Therefore Hollywood changed the facts to myths. I will be focusing on the longbow creation, relationships, and killing Arabs. In the movie Kingdom of Heaven, the longbow was used in the time of the movie. Unfortunately the longbow was really invented around 1180 C.E.. Created by the Celts in Wales. What should contemporary Christians learn from them? In this essay, this writer will give a brief account of The Crusades, demonstrate the significance they still have for Christianity today and what lessons contemporary Christians should learn from them. The Crusades were a series of Holy Wars launched between 1095 and 1291 by the Christian states of Europe against the Saracens who were Moslems. The name Crusade is derived from an old French word 'crois', meaning 'the cross'. The idea was to urge Christian warriors to go to Palestine and free Jerusalem and other holy places from Muslim domination (Internet Source 1). The first Crusade ... The Pope's impassioned speech in which he demonises the Moslems, appears to be a mastery in flattery, hyperbole, and misuse of Scripture. On the other hand, Haag (2011: 75–78) strongly argues that the Pope would never have stooped to lurid rabble rousing, neither did he intend to whip up a mass movement of peasantry because his desirable instruments for the Crusade were the knights. Also, it looks to me that the Pope took it as his divine duty to forcibly remove from the holy places of Jerusalem those who had profaned them, similar to the way Jesus drove the money changers from the holy Temple. The Pope promised the warriors immediate entry to heaven if they died on The Crusade, doing away with any necessity of penance after death (MacCulloch 2009: 384). These papal grants are unquestionably similar to the later papal indulgences that were a bone of contention by Martin Luther during the Reformation. However, it seems that the warriors believed The Crusades to be a spiritual war to purify their souls of sin. For why else would a person risk everything by travelling to a distant land were they may never return? Of course, the desire to better one's economic prospects in a land flowing with ... • 75. The Crusades Were A Dark Time For Humanity The Crusades The crusades were a dark time for humanity. This period of time was before the enlightenment, before real established governments, this was a time of kings and popes and chaos. The one established voice in the world was the church and they knew it. This monopoly of the information and influence was being threated by the Muslims and made them fear loosing their control and this fear led to the crusades. The crusades were multiple attempts by the Christians of Europe to clam the holy land. With the most important being the land of Jerusalem. This bloody struggle continued for roughly two centuries completely altering the region and its views. The first crusades were in 1095 and were ignited by Pope Urban II. The year 1095 B.C. was the hit of the Christian churches influence on the people. The church was corrupt and wanted more power and influence. The churches major appeal was to sinners throw the promise that their sins would be forgiven if you went on the crusade. Not only were all of your sins forgiven but also there was a chance you could get fame and fortune from going on crusade. This lure of treasure and salvation snared tens of thousands of people to go on "pilgrimage". The crusades were fundamentally different then any war in the past. Regular wars were fought over land, resources, or even just a grudge. The crusades were fought for an idea of religious salvation and symbolic religious paces. (Alchin 7) Once inside the city, the crusaders massacred their enemies without mercy. (Alchin 7) The fall and massacre of the city of Edessa sparked the second crusade. In the year 1146, the city of Edessa, the bulwark of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem on the side towards Mesopotamia, was taken by the Turks, and the entire population was slaughtered, or sold into slavery. (Alchin 9) This disaster threw the entire West into a state of the greatest alarm, lest the little Christian state and all the holy places should again fall into the hands of the infidels. (Alchin 9) The second crusade, though begun under the most favorable auspices, had an unhappy ending. (Alchin 12) Of the great host that set out from Europe, only a few thousands escaped annihilation in Asia Minor at the hands of the Turks. (Alchin 12) Louis and Conrad, with the remnants of their armies, made a joint attack on Damascus, but had to raise the siege after a few days. (Alchin 12) This closed the second crusade.
