So thisisscene isfrom the filmFightClub,Idecidedonthisfilmasthere isa lotof conflictinthisfilm
fromthe twomaincharacters (Tyler– Brad Pitt*Left andThe Narrator – Edward Norton*Right). In
thisscene we see the twomaincharacters discussingfightingandnotknowingmuchabout
themselvesbecausethey’ve neverfoughtbefore.Inthe scene there are the twocharactersTyler
and “The Narrator”, Tylerisdresseda lotmore freelyandcarelessthanThe Narrator,Tylerwears
brightercoloursandmore “odd” clothingcomparedtoThe Narratorwho wearssuitsanda lotof
blandcolourssuchas blackand grey.I thinkthatthe screenwriterhas usedthese coloursforthese
characters as theyhelpto translate anddescribe andgive anideato the vieweronthe characters
personalities. Tylerhavingalotmore brightercoloursinhiswardrobe meansthathischaracter is a
lotmore free livingandmore recklessasthisisshowninthe scene as he is the one whotalksThe
Narrator intopunchinghiminthe firstplace.Thenwe see the more blandcoloursof The Narrator’s
wardrobe come intoplayas we see hismore blandand timidwardrobe thathe usesto fitincome
intoplayas he isunsure aboutpunching Tylerashe hasneverbeenina fightbutthe recklessness
and care-free lifethatTylerlivesstartstoruboff on The Narrator. The coloursof the background
alsohelpto setthe scene as the bar that theyare drinkingatisverydelapadatedandrundown and
the use of minimal lightinganddarkcolourswiththingsinthe scene suchas the garbage cans and
trash bags alsohelptoportray this.Thiscouldalsobe seenthe bar beingrundownand usingsimilar
coloursto The Narrator to portray that The Narrator himself isalsorundownhimselfwiththe only
thingbeingclose thatisn’tthisblandboringcolourbeingTyler.
2. As I saidbefore the lightinginthisscene isveryminimal andthisleadstoadark overtone tothe
scene.Ithinkthat thisingeneral leadstoa darkertone of the scene ingeneral asit the start of the
filmandthe start of the mainstory arc of the film.Inthisscene TylerintroducesThe Narratortothe
worldof fightingandthe darkerside of the worldand himself thathe hasnever seenbefore, after
thisscene The Narrators life becomesdarkeranddarkerwithhimbecomingmore andmore violent.
But thenthere isthe contrast of the character lateronin the filmschangingwhatclotheshe wears
as he is seeingthe worldhowTylerseesitandbeginstolive likeTyler. The lackof lightingalsoadds
to the ideathat the bar is a run downand delapadatedaswiththe lackof lightingyoucansee that
there isa minimumamountof effortorcare surroundingthe bar.
I thinkthat thisscene isveryeffective atshowingthe confrontationof the scene aswell asthe
contrast betweenthe characterandthe settingandhow the differentelementsshow the contrast
and helptoenhance the conflict.
