1. Edward Scissorhands (1990 Tim Burton)
Didyou like the film?
I reallyenjoyedthe film, Ithinkfromthe beginningsomethingtellsyouthatKim(WinonaRyder) and
Edward (JohnnyDepp) will endupbecomingveryclose, theyhave thisconnectionthatis cleartosee.
My favourite partof the filmwaswhenshe askedhimtoholdher andwhentheykissedinhismansion,
theyare twopeople thatyoureallywouldn'texpecttobecome asclose astheydo and I thinkthat's
what'sso great aboutit.
Was there anythingstriking,orparticularlyunusual,aboutthe film?
I thinkas soonas you see Edwardyouknow straightaway thathe's unusual, justbythe fact he has
knivesforhands,Ithinkwhat'sso strikingaboutthisfilmishow distantandemotionallycutoff Edward
actuallyis,he has no ideawhatthe outside worldislike,hiscommunicationskillsare nonexistent,but
thenhe has amazingartisticskills,he cancut a bushin to anyshape or character.
Whenhe was a teenager,TimBurtonsaidhe feltverylonelyandisolated.Where doyouthinkwe see
thisreflectedinthe film?
I thinkwe definitelysee thisinEdward,,atthe beginningof the filmittellsusthathisinventordiedand
that he was leftalone upinthe mansionforyears,we can tell bylookingathimand the way hisbody
language isportrayedthathe islonelyandhasbeenisolatedforalongtime,we alsoknow thiswhenhe
meetsPeg(Dianne Wiest) for the first time, he just doesn't know how to react, he is extremely
nervous and frightened.
Tim Burton also felt that people in the suburbs where he lived were very “false”. Where is this
reflected in the film?
I think this is reflected in the film when Peg takes Edward home for the first time, everyone is so
interested in him and they all want to speak to him, they all become peg’s friend and suddenly
want to her best friend, whereas at the start when she’s knocking on their door they all push her
away and aren’t really interested in her
Fortunately Tim Burton could express himself artistically, first in drawing then in filmmaking.
Where is this reflected in the film?
I think this is defiantly reflected in the film by showing Edwards’s artistic side when he cuts
people’s hair and cuts there garden bushes in to real life shapes and characters and I also think
just the fact that he has knives for hands is quite artistic in a way and different, a large section of
the movie is focused on Edward’s talent.
The film deliberately does not look “realistic” why do you think Tim Burton exaggerated the look
of the settings, the costumes etc?
I think Tim exaggerated the settings and costumes in the movie because this tells you what it
was like back then, and also just adds more unusualness to Edward, Tim has really made
Edward stand out with his costume and the setting he has made for him
