This document compares the antagonist from the author's media piece to the character Mona from the TV show Pretty Little Liars. There are several similarities between the two antagonists, including their dark costumes intended to seem mysterious, their teenage age appearing vulnerable but hiding malice, and their initial absence followed by revealed threats through phone use. A key difference is the author's antagonist's concealed identity while Mona's face is shown.

2. The Antagonist From: Pretty Little
Liars
From my devised piece I have selected my antagonist in
order to compare to Mona from antagonist role in Pretty
Little liars. I will be comparing the similarities and
differences. I will be talking about how both of there
characters are presented through their costume,
appearance and their role played within the film.
3. Similarities
There are a number of similarities between these two antagonists.
The first similarity that can be discussed about there two
characters, is that they both have similar costumes. We decided to
dress our antagonist in black boots, black trouser, a black hoody, a
black top and black gloves because we wanted to bring the element
of ‘enigma’ through the black colour of clothing.
The other similarity is that they are both at similar ages. Both of the
actors are in there teens, the age of them are seen to be
‘vulnerable’, ‘innocent’ and ‘weak’ so the audience would think they
are harmless. But the antagonist of both films are completely the
opposite. This is a code and convention of a Thriller.
In addition another similarity I have recognised after completing my
final product is that the antagonists are not the first ones to be
introduced. For instance with my devised piece, it start of with a
lonely school girl walking her way out of school. But then after the
antagonist is shown filming her from the tree. While on the other
hand, Mona was introduced as a mate of Hanna and then
discovered by Spencer that she was ‘A’.
4. Similarities
Another similarity is that both of the antagonist are females that
are tried to be shown as males. Many well-known thrillers
involve a unknown figure dressed completely in black and is
immediately recognised to be a ‘typical’ antagonist for a thriller
film. Through the reaction from the protagonist you are able to
see that they are seen as a ‘dangerous’ and ‘negative’ character.
Finally another similarity that I have recognised is that both of the
antagonist use phones to cause harm. As with my devised
piece the antagonist is filming the protagonist every move by her
phone to upload it on YouTube and in pretty little liars Mona is
using her phone to text the other girls to make them do things.

5. Difference
s
As you can see, there are a number of similarities between my antagonist from
‘Pretty Little Liars’. However there are a few differences that I have seen.
Firstly my antagonist’s face is not shown in my device piece but in pretty little
liars Mona is shown in the black hoody. As in my device piece I would like
the audience to think it is a male and then at the end of the film to be
shocked as it’s a female. The element of not showing the antagonist is a
code and convention of a horror and thriller. Also without showing the
feature of the antagonist the audience are drawn more in and they would
carry on watching to see who the antagonist is.
Also another difference is that the antagonist’s use there phones for different
use’s. As my antagonist uses the phone to film the protagonist to put her
murder on YouTube and Mona use’s her phone just to text all the other girls
for them to be blackmailed to do something for the antagonist.
Decisively, it can be said that both characters are quite similar in the ways in
terms of their appearance, costume and their role in the film. They also have
their own unique selling points for the antagonist which in effect is a result of
‘pretty little liars’ being such a successful programme and also helping me
with my understanding and the way I portray my antagonist too.
