CREATIVITY
ImperialSchoolofLondon:Creativethinking,ToolsandTechniques
According to creativity experts, creativity is often thought
to exist on at least two levels; a lower and a higher level,
with each level representing a different type of creative
problem solving.
Lower level creativity is often referred to as small
"c" creativity, whereas the higher level is referred to as Big
"C" creativity.
C&C
LEVELS OF CREATIVITY
ImperialSchoolofLondon:Creativethinking,ToolsandTechniques
LOWER LEVEL CREATIVITY
Small "c" creativity describes the small ideas that add to
our everyday lives. This can include
• Cooking dinner
• Rearranging your cupboards
They are every day, small accomplishments, which enrich
and enhance our lives.
small C
LEVELS OF CREATIVITY
ImperialSchoolofLondon:Creativethinking,ToolsandTechniques
HIGHER LEVEL CREATIVITY
Big "C" creativity goes beyond the everyday problem solving,
where humankind has made giant leaps in, for Literature and
academia where evidence of grand creativity can be found.
These milestones can be embodied or represented by objects,
• The spaceship that took the first person to the moon
• A painting that provoked a new movement of thoughts and
techniques.
BIG C
LEVELS OF CREATIVITY
ImperialSchoolofLondon:Creativethinking,ToolsandTechniques
Creativity can also be categorized as P&H which refers
to Psychological creativity or Historical creativity.
These levels account for an idea that has occurred to an
individual for the first time, versus the first time an idea has ever
occurred in the history of the human race.

Convergent VS Divergent Thinking
Convergent and Divergent thinking are two opposite sides of a spectrum for cognitive
approaches to problem solving
https://thepeakperformancecenter.com/educational-learning/thinking/types-of-thinking-2/convergent-divergent-thinking/
Convergent Thinking
Convergent thinking is the type
of thinking that focuses on
coming up with the single, well-
established answer to a
problem. Convergent thinking
emphasizes speed, accuracy,
and logic
Eg: Multiple choice question in
an exam.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convergent_thinking
Divergent Thinking
Divergent thinking typically
occurs in a spontaneous, free-
flowing manner, where many
creative ideas are generated
and evaluated. Multiple
possible solutions are
explored in a short amount of
time
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convergent_thinking
• Concrete thinking
• Concrete thinking focuses on the physical world, rather
than the abstract one. It is all about thinking of objects
or
• ideas as specific items, rather than as a theoretical
representation of a more general idea.
• Concrete thinkers like hard facts, figures and statistics.
For example, you will not get any philosophers who think
in
• concrete terms. Children think in concrete terms as it is a
very basic and literal form of understanding.
Concrete thinking focuses on the physical
world, It is all about thinking of objects or ideas as
specific items, rather than as a theoretical
representation of a more general idea. Exclusively
concrete thinking can severely inhibit a person’s ability

Lateral Thinking
Lateral thinking is a manner of
solving problems using an indirect
and creative approach via reasoning
that is not immediately obvious. It
involves ideas that may not be
obtainable using only traditional step-
by-step logic
CREATIVETHINKINGThinking outside
the box is to think
differently,
unconventionally, or
from a new perspective.
This phrase often refers
to novel or creative
thinking. The term is
thought to derive from
management consultants
in the 1970s and 1980s
challenging their clients
to solve the "nine dots"
puzzle, whose solution
