Fiction Writing
Fiction tells an untrue story in prose.
Fiction is “untrue” in the sense that it is at
least partly made up. It is an artistic
creation that stands on its own no matter
how much it makes use of characters,
events, and settings from life.
Elements of Fiction
 Setting
- discovering your place- the place is
character
-interior place- interior setting has come to
mean basically, an indoor place.
- exterior place- the relationship between
character and exterior setting is more
mysterious
- destiny in a place- place and its people are
intertwined
Interior place
I awoke with that unfamiliar sound. I am not sure
where it came from but I am sure the room where I
am now is not mine. It is so much smaller than my
room. The walls have pictures of women from
magazines and newspapers. Wait! These are the
women who were missing from last year. When my
eyes adjusted in the darkness covering the room I
just saw that I am on shackles. The door is opening
and I felt my heart in my throat.
Exterior Place
He called me and I obliged. This is a different life from
what I have grown. He is a simple man with a simple
life. I saw him outside herding his goats. I am really
fascinated by the morning dew on his garden. I love the
sight of sunrise outside our home. Soon our kids will run
this vast greenery their father is tending every day. Our
garden will soon have flowers which will add color to our
happy life as a family. But for now, I will just enjoy how
innocent this morning looks while I run to my husband
who is waiting for me near the pristine water of the
brook nearby.
Destiny in a Place
I waited and I waited. This is the place where
everything started after twelve long years. He is
married now and I too. But they said true love never
dies and certainly your last love cannot overpower this
first love. This is the same spot in this city where I held
that gaze from him. It was not love at first sight but I
think there was a powerful force that kept us coming
back to this fountain. I still remember vividly how we
held our hands when we threw that coin in this wishing
fountain. We promised that no matter how long it is we
will wait for each other.
