The End of the Road
It all started to go downhill when my boyfriend started speaking to another girl behind my back,
sending text messages and meeting up with her for a 'chat' as he used to say. I never believed
anything he said. Neither did my friends or family. Why should we have? Before we got together
he was known as a player and someone who continuously flirted with girls even if he had a
girlfriend, but after we got together he toned it down and I thought he had changed. I'm fed up with
the way he is treating me, I know I deserve better. How did I know that the day I decided to confront
him was the day I would never see him again?

And that's when she told me. ''It's Daniel'' she said. ''He's been in an accident'' I fell to the floor, I
hadn't spoken to him, I've been ignoring him, what have I done?!
''Is he hurt? What kind of accident?'' I asked her. She looked up at me through the tears in her eyes
and I knew just from the look she gave me that it was more than a broken bone.
He was dead.
After Daniel's death I didn't leave my room for about a week, I didn't want to face the world, I
didn't want to talk to anyone, I just wanted to be alone with my thoughts. But all I could think about
was 'what if?' What if I hadn't ignored him? What if we weren't arguing, would he have been at mine
that night?
I went on my laptop about a week after, I didn't look at my phone or my laptop because I didn't
want any sympathy comments as I knew it would only make me feel worse, but that night I just
wanted to see what people had put on his Facebook wall, the moment I logged onto my account, I
had thousands of notifications. I switched my laptop straight off; I knew I shouldn't have gone on in
the first place.
The next day was his funeral, I didn't think I would be able to cope, but I knew I would have lots of
people there to support me, but I knew it would be harder for his family than it would be for

Short Story The sudden, severe storm caught me totally unaware. I was walking down Peppers
Road when the dark clouds started to build. I looked around as I huddled under a large, dead oak
tree which offered me little or no protection from the razor–sharp rain. Almost all of the houses on
this abandoned street were too badly damaged for me to take shelter in, except for one. The house
loomed impressive and morbid in the greenish–black sky. A flash of lightning briefly illuminated the

There was a crash from upstairs. My heart began to race. Who was it? What was it? I could only
hear my heart as I listened for another sound. The silence throbbed in my ears; I stood at the
bottom of the staircase. The sounds had come from upstairs. My curiosity and swallowed my fears
and nervously ascended the battered and dilapidated stairs, not knowing what I was going to
encounter. On the second floor I found a bathroom furnished in an old murky green with scale on it,
I left it undisturbed as the floor looked unsafe. I found several bedrooms laden with cloth–covered
antiques, clothes that might have been beautiful at one time, and tarnished jewellery. The walls

Short literary works are confined to the boundaries on length according to their specific genre; they
don't have time for lengthy or slow introductions.
William Faulkner's "A Rose of Emily" (p. 443) begins immediately with a startling statement
about Miss Emily's death. Faulkner creates a first sentence that describes how "our whole town
went to her funeral" (1), using of course the first person form of "we" (28, 43, 46, etc...) The
narrator is most likely one of the townspeople who represents the point of view of the entire town.
Through the use of plural first person narration, the author makes the reader feel as if though they
are part of the story, grasping his or her interest more quickly. Faulkner employs this first person
narration in the first sentence of his story, thus immediately capturing the reader's attention. The
reader's engagement in the story also adds to its emotionality. By feeling as though he or she is a
part of the story, the reader often feels sadness, joy and other emotions with the characters of the
story. When the townspeople were "surprised when Homer Barron...was gone" (46), the use of
"we" (46) forces the reader to feel the same confusion and shock that the townspeople do. The first

The short stories "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Mocomber"
were both written by world renowned author Ernest Hemingway. The two stories are written
completely unrelated to each other; however, both stories have vast similarities in the time and
place in which they take place. Hemingway is a writer that is very methodical in his word choices.
When reading these two stories a second time the reader finds considerable differences in the writing
style the author uses in each story. To demonstrate, three sentences from each story will be compared
and contrasted to show the differences in word usage, word connotation, and to find which story is

The word "plummeted" as defined in the American Heritage Dictionary "is to fall straight down;
plunge".
The two words are close in meaning; however, "plummeted" is a better word for the sheer reason
that the reader can directly visualize the vultures dive toward earth. When the word "plummeted" is
heard a person thinks of plunging to death or fall at in incredible rate. "Plummeted" is much more
dramatic and defining then the word "planed." The word "Planned" could have various images
connected with it. "Planed" leaves the reader too many options when visualizing the vultures decent
to the ground. For example the reader might visualize the vulture gliding down to the ground or
zigzagging to the ground. The word 'Plummeted" is a better defined and more dramatic word.
Making the sentence, "On the far bank of the stream Macomber could see, above the trees, vultures
circling and plummeting down," the better sentence of the two.
The next two sentences, "'You Bitch,' he said," from the "Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "'Why not let up
on the bitchery just a little, Margot,' Macomber said, cutting the eland steak and putting some
mashed potato, gravy and carrot on the down–turned fork that tined through the piece of meat,"
again have similarities. For example, in each sentence the husband is calling his wife a bitch of

The essential difference between a poem and a short story is the difference of scope. So, poems are
short and they, briefly, tell you how the author is feeling about in a few words, while short stories
could be written by the author at any moment with a plot, themes, character development, setting etc.
The play "Naked Lunch" by Michael Hollinger is about a man named Vernon and a female named
Lucy. They used to be a couple but they are no longer together. When they were sitting down to
eat, Vernon started asking her the reasons of why she did not want to eat steak. He was making a
big problem of it. Vernon finally ends up making Lucy eat the steak by yelling at her. Consequently,
she ate the steak because she was scared.
A play can be long or short, it all depends on what the author wants to transmit to his or her audience.
The time is essentially important. In a play the characters need to talk each other to have an act; on
the other hand, in short stories the narrator explains the situation, he is the one making and telling us
the story.

emotional respond from the reader. In "I could not stop for Death" by Emily Dickinson, the author
gives us a clue of what the poem will be about at the beginning. This makes it easier to understand;

honestly thought that this couple would get back together since they were having diner, but

patterns at all. For example, modern short stories only occasionally have an exposition. More typical,
though, is an abrupt beginning, with the story starting in the middle of the action. As with longer
stories, plots of short stories also have a climax, crisis, or turning–point. However, the endings of
many short stories are abrupt and open and may or may not have a moral or practical lesson.
Of course, as with any art form, the exact characteristics of a short story will vary by author.
Length determining what exactly separates a short story from longer fictional formats is
problematic. A classic definition of a short story is that one should be able to be read it in one
sitting, a point most notably made in Edgar Allan Poe 's essay "The Philosophy of Composition"
(1846). Other definitions place the maximum word length at 7,500 words. In contemporary usage,
the term short story most often refers to a work of fiction no longer than 20,000 words and no shorter
than 1,000.

Over dinner, the white couple in the group questioned the black men about the light–skinned black
people. They wondered if many people who were black could pass as white and the black men
confirmed it true. The white couple the revealed to the group of black men that they were in fact
black people that passed as white individuals. The narrator then explains the change of mood in
the group; the atmosphere became more comfortable, relaxed and natural, knowing that they
were all the same. After the group's pleasurable night, the couple went to get in their cab and yet
again, revealed more information. They said that they were actually not black people at all, but
they figured that they would pass as black people just as black individuals passed as white folks.
This information confuses the men; they can's figure out if the couple was actually black or white.
All they know is that they had a great night with a couple of friendly people. Langston Hughes
lived during the Harlem Renaissance, a time of prosperity among black artist and writers, and at
the height of racial discrimination. Whether it was Jim Crow laws or poll tax, black people were
always being put down. Hughes was one of the most influential individuals of the Harlem
Renaissance. He was a great visionary of his time and understood that racism was actually hurting the
country.

death. Every person reacts different to situations in life. Emily most likely reacted to the death of
her father and subsequent deaths in the way she did, due to the fact that her father was
everything to her and in a sense ran her life, she was lost without him and never fully recovered to
be a socially active human being. In "Barn Burning" however the boy was not happy with his father,
he did not like how he was growing up and how the father lived a life of lies and lack of respect
which is why the boy was able to move on easily.
