The document discusses how businesses need to become more agile to adapt to increasing uncertainty and disruption. It notes that the average lifespan of companies has decreased significantly and that disruption can happen more quickly. It advocates embracing uncertainty and discovering customer needs through early customer contact and problem discovery. Businesses should explore and experiment more while balancing exploration with execution through an agile approach.

ICSE 2016 Software Engineering in Practice keynote.
Continuity in software development is all about shortening cycle times. For example, continuous integration shortens the time to integrating changes from multiple developers and continuous delivery shortens the time to get those integrated changes into the hands of users. Although it is now possible to get multiple new versions of complex software systems released per day, it still often takes years, if ever, to get software engineering research results into use by software development teams. What would software engineering research and software engineering development look like if we could shorten the cycle time from taking a research result into practice? What can we learn from how continuity in development is performed to make it possible to achieve continuous adoption of research results? Do we even want to achieve continuous adoption? In this talk, I will explore these questions, drawing from experiences I have gained in helping to take a research idea to market and from insights learned from interviewing industry leaders.

What are machines learning? How might that impact design?Andreas Wolters
Machines have picked up astonishing skills: they beat us at chess and Go, they have learnt to pilot a drone or how to create oil paintings. These impressive feats are pushing the boundaries, they show us what is possible. But machines have picked up skills that are less noteworthy, but way more useful: they have learnt to understand what we say, they can figure out which series we might want to binge on next or how to write compelling news articles.
Machines have learnt many things that are finding their ways into digital products. In this talk, I will give a bird’s-eye view of these developments — and I’ll dare to make some predictions about how these might impact the way we design products.
I gave this talk in Zürich on the 31st of October 2019.
Built With ❤ - Why Developer Experience Matters - DevOps Days Boston 2019Arthur Maltson
One evening you’re browsing Twitter and you stumble on a really cool new Open Source tool. The README is intuitive, the installation is seamless and you’re up and running in no time. When using the tool, error messages are clear and how to fix the issues obvious. Before you know it, you’ve achieved what you wanted and you feel like a superstar! But the experience is very different the next day at work. You just spent a couple weeks fiddling to get a project running locally but now you have to jump through hoops to get the application built and deployed with that dreadful internal tool. Why can’t our day time experiences look like our weekend passion projects? It can!
In this session you’ll be introduced to the concept of Developer Experience and why it matters. You’ll then embark on a journey to build a new tool with Developer Experience as a core focus. You’ll learn how certain targeted approaches can improve the Developer Experience through the entire Experience Lifecycle. At the end of the talk you will be equipped with ways to improve the Developer Experience in your work; whether you’re building tools for developers, collaborating with other developers on a business project, or just building a side project one your own.
This is the version of the presentation given at DevOps Days 2019.
Planning for Rapid Growth and Economic UncertaintyCharles Crouch
Online Retail Logistics Conference, 18-19 November, Sydney, Australia
As James Burke observed in his TV show "Connections," when information spread gradually, change occurred slowly. Today the online world spreads information explosively, and change is a constant. Two business techniques are discussed to address today's rapid change:
• Strategy as Simple Rules. Complex businesses need to simplify to be able to quickly adapt to changes in their marketplace. Using simple rules to describe and operate business processes lets people easily understand how to act when confronted with a new situation.
• Thinking Lean. The lean startup movement focuses on helping small startup businesses use their limited resources efficiently. Small, incremental steps, accompanied by adaptive changes, to a goal are preferred over a massive project which requires immense resources. Even large businesses can apply lean principles when deciding whether to enter a new market.
Presentation from October 4, 2015: Arts Midwest Orchestras 20/20: Context, Connection, Collaboration. An attempt to lay out the context of audience, competition, technology and strategy - then a set of practical steps to get things done.

Prompt Engineering - an Art, a Science, or your next Job Title?Maxim Salnikov
It's quite ironic that to interact with the most advanced AI in our history - Large Language Models: ChatGPT, etc. - we must use human language, not programming one. But how to get the most out of this dialogue i.e. how to create robust and efficient prompts so AI returns exactly what's needed for your solution on the first try? After my session, you can add the Junior (at least) Prompt Engineer skill to your CV: I will introduce Prompt Engineering as an emerging discipline with its own methodologies, tools, and best practices. Expect lots of examples that will help you to write ideal prompts for all occasions.
This session is based on my research and experiments in Prompt Engineering and is 100% relevant for cloud developers who investigate adding some LLM-powered features to their solutions. It's a guide to building proper prompts for AI to get desired results fast and cost-efficient.

From my presentation at the Internet Summit 2011 in Raleigh, NC. Focused on leveraging skills as a 'designer as website maker' to 'designer as catalyst.' Illustrating four areas where catalysts can approach adaptive challenges (wicked problems) and urging a move from user-centric design towards community-centric design.

You know that Lean Startup techniques have helped your company move forward, and you know your competitors are successfully using those same techniques. To stay ahead of the competition, you need to find new ways to accelerate your company. The key is to use Lean to balance exploration and operation within your company. In this experience report, Zach Nies and Rachel Weston Rowell will share techniques and stories from startups to large organizations that have accelerated their growth by applying Lean thinking to how they operate their company and how they explore through uncertainty.
Great companies build products that customers love. While this means they build valuable and useful features, it also means they don’t build things that aren’t valuable. Really great products and software are created by organizations that manage to put the customer at the center of their thinking and then work iteratively and incrementally to offer and test products to see what delights and what doesn’t.
The startup community has evolved disciplined practices that allow them to successfully navigate these highly uncertain environments. You aren’t a startup anymore, but these techniques can scale to your environment.
In this talk, you will learn the skills to become effective, disciplined explorers who know how to bring new features, products and services to market inside the context of a large company. This will allow you to successfully navigate uncertainty, while not sacrificing your ability to execute.
Frame, Build, Measure, Learn: Responding to ChangeZach Nies
The key to running effective experiments is to first frame the experiment thoughtfully. This takes time, but the investment pays off many-fold. This presentation will guide you through the key steps of framing, which, when done properly, reward your brain–and your organization–with learning.
How well are you responding to and taking advantage of market disruptions? Business agility is key to staying alive and taking advantage of market shifts for long-term business viability. This presentation walks you through the steps to make your organization more innovative and able to meet an ever-changing market.
Customer experience in today’s business climate requires businesses to execute, learn, and adapt at increasingly faster rates. Therein lies the opportunity for businesses that want to aggressively compete and differentiate, build customer experience agility across their operations, and dramatically shorten design and development cycles. This session provides a hands-on introduction to the principles behind agile and lean startup—emerging practices in the developer and entrepreneurial communities—and discusses how to leverage these approaches in CX strategy, design, and business operations. With customer experience agility, brands can more rapidly learn from customers, deliver disruptive value, and respond to market conditions.
Are you struggling to figure out what customers want? Are you getting positive feedback on your product, but you can't find a way to get people to trade you money or attention for it? These are common traps that can eat up valuable time and money. This presentation will give you the tools, from Design Thinking, Customer Development, Agile and a sprinkle of brain science, to become a better explorer who can navigate toward success.

Too often we label software "done" when it’s not tested, only partially documented and only half ready for release. We produce no business value, we pile on technical debt, and stakeholders have no confidence in our status reports. This presentation explores how you can use Burndown charts to improve your process.
