Workshop: Setting the Foundations for an Iterative Course Evolution Model – A...
Elements of exemplary course design are well documented and readily accessible from various resources. Most notable are the Blackboard Exemplary Course Program (http://bit.ly/2jCURRd) and the Quality Matters Rubrics and Standards (http://bit.ly/2jdtwTG). While these are excellent resources that outlines the goals and standards to improve the learning experience of students in an online or blended course environment, workload associated with its deployment and management is difficult to evaluate.
With increasing strain on teaching and learning support teams within institutions, this exacerbates the challenge faced by instructors and academics of HOW to approach improving their courses in a scalable and manageable way.
This workshop will focus on facilitating participants in the development of a course evolution and management framework. The goal is to guide participants in establishing a unique set of foundations for course design, upon which iterative improvements can be planned and executed in a manageable manner. These can then be mapped against relevant Exemplary Course Design Rubric elements to create short-, mid-, and long-term milestones.
Planning an online course
This document provides guidance on planning an online course in 5 steps:
1. Understand the audience's needs such as objectives, participants, and outcomes.
2. Use a backward design approach to start with the outcomes and work backwards.
3. Apply a pedagogical model like the 5Es to guide learning design with activities to engage, explore, explain, evaluate and elaborate on concepts.
4. Create a course structure with objectives, topics, assessments and resources.
5. Adopt appropriate delivery formats ranging from self-paced to educator-led to peer activities using videos, readings, assessments and discussions.

This document summarizes the transition from the WebCT Vista learning management system to Moodle at Napier University. Some key points:
- Many modules were heavily online or blended before the transition, with content from WebCT migrated to Moodle. Training sessions and guides were provided but replicating complex activities required significant support.
- Common issues included navigating differences between the interfaces, locking discussions, hiding/revealing content, and migrating content between modules. Staff generally had positive attitudes but the transition was laborious.
- Support from the Moodle team was praised for helping manage the large volume of migrated modules and individual support requests. Lessons learned included tidying content before migration and managing expectations of change.

Eden outlined a plan to scale up UX efforts through a design system, enable more contributors, balance business and user needs in roadmapping, and tie together research, design, development and content operations. Regular research iterations and pulse checks would evolve the design system and ensure operations are working well.

Needs assessment part_2

It was difficult to determine teacher interests from the survey as some questions were answered incorrectly. The document proposes offering small group training on the Edline program and VoiceThread. As the demand for blended and online learning opportunities increases, so does the need to ensure the quality of online education through faculty development programming. And with the increase in the diffusion of blended and online programming across higher education institutions, stakeholders are looking for ways to ensure the quality of the student experience and better understand the impact on student outcomes. Recently, many of us have been asked to provide evidence of the effectiveness of our faculty development programming: administrators are looking for a return on investment in faculty development to ensure quality in blended and online programming, as we are seeing decreases in state funding and enrollments, which leads to cut budgets. In order to for us to determine the effectiveness of our programming using a backwards design approach, we need to first understand what is a good online or blended course as well as what competencies are required of faculty to teach blended and online courses and how those can be best facilitated in a faculty development program. Then we can consider how to evaluate the impact on student outcomes.
This workshop will offer a collaborative and interactive opportunity to connect with colleagues to consider and construct how the effectiveness of faculty development programming can be determined and disseminated. A model of evaluation for a faculty development program will be shared.

Identify the characteristics of a good blended and online course, including the pedagogical model

MIE Teams Teacher Training - 20 February 2021

Needs assessment part_2
The document discusses providing technology professional development to teachers based on the results of a technology survey. It was difficult to determine teacher interests from the survey as some questions were answered incorrectly. The document proposes offering small group training on the Edline program and VoiceThread. Edline training is selected as 6 teachers rated it a 1 for interest, and many teachers are unfamiliar with the required program. VoiceThread is also proposed as 5 teachers rated it a 2 for interest, and most teachers reported advanced computer and Microsoft Office skills. The training will be provided during grade level meetings which 76% of teachers preferred. Administration has approved providing the training at meetings, with the option for more time or one-on-one coaching if needed.

Creatng Course Reading Lists Made Easy

Malcolm Brown and Veronica Diaz will moderate this online seminar with Tanya Joosten, Dylan Barth, and Nicole Weber from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.
As the demand for blended and online learning opportunities increases, so does the need to ensure the quality of online education through faculty development programming. And with the increase in the diffusion of blended and online programming across higher education institutions, stakeholders are looking for ways to ensure the quality of the student experience and better understand the impact on student outcomes. Recently, many of us have been asked to provide evidence of the effectiveness of our faculty development programming: administrators are looking for a return on investment in faculty development to ensure quality in blended and online programming, as we are seeing decreases in state funding and enrollments, which leads to cut budgets. In order to for us to determine the effectiveness of our programming using a backwards design approach, we need to first understand what is a good online or blended course as well as what competencies are required of faculty to teach blended and online courses and how those can be best facilitated in a faculty development program. Then we can consider how to evaluate the impact on student outcomes.
This workshop will offer a collaborative and interactive opportunity to connect with colleagues to consider and construct how the effectiveness of faculty development programming can be determined and disseminated. A model of evaluation for a faculty development program will be shared.

Identify the characteristics of a good blended and online course, including the pedagogical model
Determine what elements and formats should be considered in designing a faculty development program
