Crafting Student Creators:
Incorporating Tangible Projects in
the One Shot
Cara Evanson, James, Sponsel, and Sara Swanson
Davidson College
Framework for IL
“In addition, this Framework draws significantly
upon the concept of metaliteracy, which offers a
renewed vision of information literacy as an
overarching set of abilities in which students are
consumers and creators of information who can
participate successfully in collaborative spaces.”
Our Experience
• BIO 112 – Research Strategy Emails
• SPA 490 – Research Stations with Word docs
• GSS 101 – Google doc with questions
• Have you developed lesson plans in the past that
have incorporated students as creators?
• If so, what forms have they taken?
• What challenges did you encounter (or do you
anticipate encountering) when implementing
these types of lesson plans?
Activity
• Choose one of the following:
▫ First-year 101:
Assignment to write a 5-page research paper on
a topic of the students’ choice
▫ History 499:
Seniors working on individual theses
▫ Interdisciplinary 320:
Mix of class years working on a media studies
project
• How does knowing that your work in this session
has become a living document help you to relate
to how your students might feel as creators?
Thanks for coming!
