2. CONSTITUTIONAL ROLE OF FAO
I. FAO attaches great importance to
statistical information and to the capacity-
building of member nations in this domain.
II. Article I of its Constitution indicates clearly
that “The Organization shall collect,
analyze, interpret and disseminate
information relating to nutrition, food and
agriculture.”
3. FAO TOOLS OF DATA DISSEMINATION
AT GLOBAL AND COUNTRY LEVELS
• FAO is therefore committed to the development and implementation of
integrated systems of data and metadata on food and agriculture:
At the Global Level with FAOSTAT, the world’s largest database on
time series for food and agriculture, covering over 235 countries and
territories, a reference for all users in the world.
At the country level with CountrySTAT which applies the principles
of FAOSTAT at the Country Level.
Inform evidence-based decision making
Enable countries to make their data available
Help institutional coordination
Create and engage in partnerships
4. THE OBJECTIVES OF THE CountrySTAT CONSULTATIVE
MEETING
1. Take stock of the main achievements and lessons
learned from the CountrySTAT Projects.
2. Present the innovations of the CountrySTAT system
using the FENIX platform (Open Data Network for sharing
agriculture and food security information).
3. Best practises of CountrySTAT :
• Promote ownership and sustainability
• Enhance data availability/accessibility
• Create a national “One-Stop-Shop” for food and agriculture statistics.
• Implement the CountrySTAT Institutional Framework and strengthen
collaboration with the key National Partners.
4. Future vision of CountrySTAT (IT, Stats, Communication)
5. • Endorsement by the 23rd session of AFCAS of the
conclusions and recommendations of the meeting
1. Preparation of a concept note on the future vision of
CountrySTAT
2. Preparation of a new project proposal in accordance with the
new vision for CountrySTAT
3. Engage in advocacy towards the existing and new resource
partners for financing the new project
4. Put the new project in the dynamics of NSDS implementation
processes and strengthen the collaboration with partners
