5.2 Word order in questions – ordine delle parole nelle domande
In Inglese, le domande non si fanno cambiando l’intonazione della frase (come in Italiano), ma
cambiando la struttura della frase stessa.
Questions with WH- question words – be (verbo essere)
Question word Verb Rest Answer
Where are you from? I'm from Stuttgart.
What is your name? My name is Peter.
How are Pat and Sue? They're fine.
Questions without question words in the Simple Present (tutti gli altri verbi senza il
pronome interrogativo)
Auxiliary Subject Verb Rest Yes/No Subject Auxiliary
Do you read books?

Does Peter play football? Yes, he does.

Corso base di inglese - Lezione n. 5
5.2 Word order in questions – ordine delle parole nelle domande
Word order rule: (nel presente e nel passato per le
domande vale la seguente regola)
QUASI = QUestion + Auxiliary + Subject + Infinitive
Corso base di inglese - Lezione n. 5
5.3 QUESTIONS – INTONATION OF YOUR VOICE
Sample Sentences for practicing intonation in English questions
Yes/No Questions
Yes/No questions have a rising intonation at the end of the sentence. This means that the
speaker’s voice gets just a little higher as they finish the sentence. Below are some example
sentences to practice.
Le domande che prevedono una risposta sì o no, prevedono che il tono della voce salga alla fine
della domanda. Di seguito alcuni esempi per fare partica:
1. Are you ready to go?
2. Could you please repeat it?
3. Is it cold today?
4. Am I interrupting?
5. Are you a girl?
6. Is it time to go?
Corso base di inglese - Lezione n. 5
5.3 QUESTIONS – INTONATION OF YOUR VOICE
Questions that ask for information
Usually information questions (wh questions) have a rise/fall intonation at the end of the sentence.
This means that the speaker's voice goes higher for a moment and then drops lower to end the
sentence.
Generalmente nelle domande usate per chiedere informazioni la voce dello speaker sale e poi
scende più bassa verso la fine della frase.
1. What time is it?
2. What’s your name?
3. Where do you live?
4. How do you get to school?
5. When should we go?
6. Who ate the apple pie?
7. Where can I find a bank?
Corso base di inglese - Lezione n. 5
5.4 CAN - POTERE
FORM
Can is always followed by the verb in the infinitive form. Notice that there are two negative forms: 'can't'
and 'cannot'. These mean exactly the same thing. When we are speaking, we usually say 'can't'.
Can si usa seguito dall’infinito e rimane uguale per tutte le persone, sia singolare sia plurale. ‘Can’t’ è la
forma contratta di ‘cannot’ e la usiamo sempre quando parliamo.
+
I can drive
You can drive
She/he/it can drive
We can drive
You can drive
They can drive
-
I can’t (cannot) drive
You can’t (cannot)
drive
She/he/it (cannot)

Can she/he/it play?
Can we come?
Can you sing?

Corso base di inglese - Lezione n. 5

Can you do that? Puoi farlo tu?
I can't come for dinner tonight. Non posso venire a cena stasera.
You can leave your car in that parking space. Puoi lasciare la macchina al parcheggio
We use 'can' to talk about 'ability'. Usiamo ‘can’ quando descriviamo le nostre abilità

qualcosa.

You can use my phone. Puoi usare il mio telefono.

Corso base di inglese - Lezione n. 5
5.5 CAN – potere - pronunciation
There is a difference in the pronunciation of ‘can’ and its negative form ‘can’t’. C’è una differenza
nella pronuncia di can e la sua forma negativa ‘can’t’.
Generally the positive form ‘can’ is unstressed. Generalmente la forma positiva non ha lo stress.
The negative form ‘can’t’ is always stressed. Nella forma negativa ‘can’t’ mettiamo invece sempre lo
stress.
Listen and repeat the sentences.
Can I park here? Yes, you can.
Where can I park? You can park here. You can’t park here.
