The coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle. There are two main coronary arteries - the right coronary artery and left main coronary artery. The right coronary artery supplies the right ventricle and atrium while the left main artery splits into the left anterior descending artery and left circumflex artery which supply different regions of the heart. Coronary artery disease develops due to plaque buildup in the arteries, restricting blood flow and oxygen to the heart. Risk factors include age, family history, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Treatment options include lifestyle changes, medications, surgery such as bypass or transplant, and angioplasty. Heart failure or heart attack can occur if blood flow is completely blocked.
