- COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. It was first identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019.
- The virus spreads primarily from person to person through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People can also be infected by touching contaminated surfaces.
- Common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. While most cases result in mild symptoms, some progress to pneumonia and multi-organ failure. The elderly and those with underlying conditions are most at risk.
