In contrast, it is often difficult to engage students in theoretically driven or statistically based units. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are now being used across the world to provide millions of learners with access to education. Many learners complete these courses successfully, or to their own satisfaction, but the high numbers who do not finish remain a subject of concern for platform providers and educators. In 2013, a team from Stanford University analysed engagement patterns on three MOOCs run on the Coursera platform. They found four distinct patterns of engagement that emerged from MOOCs based on videos and assessments. However, not all platforms take this approach to learning design. Courses on the FutureLearn platform are underpinned by a social-constructivist pedagogy, which includes discussion as an important element. In this paper, we analyse engagement patterns on four FutureLearn MOOCs and find that only two clusters identified previously apply in this case. Instead, we see seven distinct patterns of engagement: Samplers, Strong Starters, Returners, Mid-way Dropouts, Nearly There, Late Completers and Keen Completers. This suggests that patterns of engagement in these massive learning environments are influenced by decisions about pedagogy. We also make some observations about approaches to clustering in this context.

The promise of learning analytics is that they will enable us to understand and optimize learning and the environments in which it takes place. The intention is to develop models, algorithms, and processes that can be widely used. In order to do this, we need to move from small-scale research within our disciplines towards large-scale implementation across our institutions. This is a tough challenge, because educational institutions are stable systems, resistant to change. To avoid failure and maximize success, implementation of learning analytics at scale requires careful consideration of the entire ‘TEL technology complex’. This complex includes the different groups of people involved, the educational beliefs and practices of those groups, the technologies they use, and the specific environments within which they operate. Providing reliable and trustworthy analytics is just one part of implementing analytics at scale. It is also important to develop a clear strategic vision, assess institutional culture critically, identify potential barriers to adoption, develop approaches that can overcome these, and put in place appropriate forms of support, training, and community building. In her keynote, Rebecca introduced tools, resources, organisations and case studies that can be used to support the deployment of learning analytics at scale

Reasons Primary Teachers Give About Teaching Mathematical Problem Solving: A ...
Since the 1980s, problem solving has been considered the central theme of school mathematics as students are now required to develop investigational and problem solving skills. But teachers’ beliefs regarding teaching mathematical problem solving has been questioned. These beliefs, mediated by intentions, have also been noted as precursors to any shift from the traditional show and tell approach towards teaching mathematical problem solving. However, little research has addressed teachers’ beliefs and intention to teach mathematics problem solving in primary schools. Particularly, research about mathematics teachers’ attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control beliefs relative to teaching mathematics problem solving in primary schools remains sparse. This study, which is part of a larger project, begins a line of research investigating the behavioral intentions of primary teachers to teaching mathematical problem solving. The purpose study was to investigate primary school teachers’ salient behavioural, normative and control beliefs regarding the teaching problem solving using the Ajzen’s (1991) Theory of Planned Behavior. The study reports on an elicitation study with a diverse sample of 50 primary teachers from six private and public schools from a municipality in the Central Region of Ghana. The participants responded to nine open-ended survey questions designed following Ajzen’s (1991) Theory of Planned Behaviour. In general, the study suggests that participating school teachers believe there are benefits to teaching mathematical problem solving. However, limited resources (time, teaching and learning materials), language and class level present substantial barriers to teaching mathematical problem solving in the primary schools. Specific suggestions for addressing teachers’ beliefs about teaching MPS are recommended.
VoiceS In-Service Course Olomouce: Blended Learning
This document discusses a pilot study evaluating the use of a blended learning approach to support life skills in 5th grade students. The study used a learning management system called Moodle to supplement in-class lessons from the Lions Quest program. Students posted 555 total messages during the online activities, with the most popular activity receiving 117 posts. Content analysis of the posts showed that students discussed 66 topics related to cooperation, using Moodle, personal information, and reflecting on Lions Quest lessons. Most students enjoyed writing posts and chatting online, though some had technical issues. Scaling up learning analytics
Talk by Rebeca Ferguson (Open University, UK, and LACE project).
The promise of learning analytics is that they will enable us to understand and optimize learning and the environments in which it takes place. The intention is to develop models, algorithms, and processes that can be widely used. In order to do this, we need to move from small-scale research within our disciplines towards large-scale implementation across our institutions. This is a tough challenge, because educational institutions are stable systems, resistant to change. To avoid failure and maximize success, implementation of learning analytics at scale requires careful consideration of the entire ‘TEL technology complex’. This complex includes the different groups of people involved, the educational beliefs and practices of those groups, the technologies they use, and the specific environments within which they operate. Providing reliable and trustworthy analytics is just one part of implementing analytics at scale. It is also important to develop a clear strategic vision, assess institutional culture critically, identify potential barriers to adoption, develop approaches that can overcome these, and put in place appropriate forms of support, training, and community building. In her keynote, Rebecca introduced tools, resources, organisations and case studies that can be used to support the deployment of learning analytics at scale
EdTech Fact or Fiction
Every math educator has seen first-hand evidence that student understanding of mathematics is far from where we’d like it to be. And in the world of EdTech, educators have seen the term “adaptive learning” become increasingly popular as companies try to support student learning in mathematics with new technologies. A presentation given to University of Colorado Dept of Anesthesia Grand Rounds on April 29, 2019. Designed to be interactive and follow principles of active learning, where slides ask a question, this was a time for the audience to pause & discuss with each other what they had learned to that point, as a way of co-constructing knowledge, bringing in critical appraisal, and application of concepts to their own teaching & learning practice. Meant to reach a broad audience, only some of whom are educators, the presentation also remains at an introductory level to ensure broad applicability. Reasons Primary Teachers Give About Teaching Mathematical Problem Solving: A ...
Since the 1980s, problem solving has been considered the central theme of school mathematics as students are now required to develop investigational and problem solving skills. But teachers’ beliefs regarding teaching mathematical problem solving has been questioned. These beliefs, mediated by intentions, have also been noted as precursors to any shift from the traditional show and tell approach towards teaching mathematical problem solving. However, little research has addressed teachers’ beliefs and intention to teach mathematics problem solving in primary schools. Particularly, research about mathematics teachers’ attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control beliefs relative to teaching mathematics problem solving in primary schools remains sparse. This study, which is part of a larger project, begins a line of research investigating the behavioral intentions of primary teachers to teaching mathematical problem solving. The purpose study was to investigate primary school teachers’ salient behavioural, normative and control beliefs regarding the teaching problem solving using the Ajzen’s (1991) Theory of Planned Behavior. The study reports on an elicitation study with a diverse sample of 50 primary teachers from six private and public schools from a municipality in the Central Region of Ghana. The participants responded to nine open-ended survey questions designed following Ajzen’s (1991) Theory of Planned Behaviour. In general, the study suggests that participating school teachers believe there are benefits to teaching mathematical problem solving. However, limited resources (time, teaching and learning materials), language and class level present substantial barriers to teaching mathematical problem solving in the primary schools. Specific suggestions for addressing teachers’ beliefs about teaching MPS are recommended.
VoiceS In-Service Course Olomouce: Blended Learning
This document discusses a pilot study evaluating the use of a blended learning approach to support life skills in 5th grade students. The study used a learning management system called Moodle to supplement in-class lessons from the Lions Quest program. Students posted 555 total messages during the online activities, with the most popular activity receiving 117 posts. Content analysis of the posts showed that students discussed 66 topics related to cooperation, using Moodle, personal information, and reflecting on Lions Quest lessons. Most students enjoyed writing posts and chatting online, though some had technical issues. The study demonstrated that blended learning can help students more deeply engage with and discuss life skills topics beyond the classroom. - 2. Acceleration taught using the method of co-operative approach • The chosen subject was acceleration. The students were divided into groups of four and they worked in our school’s computer laboratory so as to have access to the internet. • The sub-topics of the main topic were: • What is acceleration and how is it defined? Is it a scalar or a vector quantity? What is the unit of measurement of acceleration? • What do we call uniform linear motion and what is the graph of acceleration-velocity like? • How do we define velocity in uniform linear motion and how do we prove the formula u=u0+at? What is the graph of velocity-time like? • How do we define displacement in uniform linear motion and how do we prove the formula S=u0t+1/2 at2? What is the graph of displacent-time like?
- 3. What are the benefits of the co-operative method in relation to the teacher-centered one • The student is inspired by a sense of team cooperation, tolerance and fraternity. • Within the group, the student acquires more self- discovery, initiative and self-esteem. • Students learn to work by themselves and they come in direct contact with the object of the particular knowledge. • The issue of indiscipline is limited and what predomines is healthy competition as well as co- operation within the group.
- 4. The potential disadvantages are: • It is more time-consuming, as it demands more tuition time. • Often the use of computers is required, in most schools the computer rooms are not enough for all classes. • Students don’t get the chance to practise for a long time on the application of the formulas they are taught through the exercises.
