DEVICE
The IUD is one of the best methods of contraception
during lactation because of its high efficacy and its
lack of effect on breast milk or infant growth .
Generations of IUD :
First : inert devices e.g : Lippes loop
Second : all the cooper containing devices
Third : hormonal devices e.g. Progestasert and
Mirena

11. Copper T 380 A, Ca T 380Ag and cu T 380 S
• Made up of polyethylene
• 314 mm2 copper wire
• The wire 380 Ag has a silver core
• Life span cu T 380A is 10 years

12. Progestrone IUD ( progestasert)
• 38 mg of progestrone dispensed in silicone oil.
• Deliver progestrone to the uterus at the rate of 0.65
ug/day
• Effective for 1 year

13. Mirena / LNG IUD / LNG 20 / Levonova / LNG
IUS
• Mirena contains 52mg levonogestrol
• LNG released into the uterine cavity at the rate of 20
ug/day
• It acts upto 5 years.

14. RECENT ADVANCES
Post placental IUCD Insertion
 Inserted immediately after vaginal delivery or
LSCS.

15. NEWER IUDS
Cu-fix IUD ( flexi – Gard)

16. Cu safe IUD:
• T- Shaped redio- opaque plastic body.
• The ends of the flexible trasverse arms are inwardly
bent, providing a nonirritating , fundus -seeking
mechanism.

17. COMPLICATIONS OF IUD
• Increased bleeding
• Misplaced IUD
• Infections
• Pregnancy
• Ectopic pregnancy

18. ORAL CONTRACEPTIVE PILLS
Combined pills – 2 Types:
A) Monophasic pills
B) Multiphasic pills
A) Monophasic pills : These pills contain estrogen
and progestrogen in the same amount in each pill.

19. B) Multiphasic pills
Amount of estrogen and progestrogen in two
( biphasic) and three ( triphasic) periods with in the
mestrual cycle.
The dose of progestrogen is low at the begining and
higher at the end
Very rarly used today.

20. INJECTABLE CONTRACEPTIVES
Progestrone only injectable contraceptives
1. Depot – medroxyprogestrone acetate ( DMPA)
2. Norethisterone enanthate ( NET EN or noristerat)

21. TRANSDERMAL CONTRACEPTIVE
PATCH
150ug of progestrogen
Wear a patch for 1 week and replaced it by another
placed at a different site for a total of 3 weeks,
followed by 1 week with no patch

22. EMERGENCY
CONTRACEPTION
LNG –ONLY PILLS
• 0.75mg taken as soon as possible after unprotected
intercourse
• Same dose taken 12 h later, both doses must be
taken with in 72h of intercourse.

23. COMBINED ESTROGEN
AND PROGESTRONE
PILLS
• Pills contain 250ug LNG
• Two pills should be taken as soon as possible , but
not later than 72h of unprotected coitus.

24. ANTIPROGESTERONE
(MIFEPRISTONE)
• Latest WHO randomized trial has noted that a single dose
of 10mg mifepristone is as effective as LNG for emergency
contraception
• No side effects & periods start after 7 days.
• Low dose mifepristone for emergency contraception has not
been registered in any country.
