Cloud offers organizations the opportunity to run their workloads on physical machines at a reduced cost, with better overall performance and enhanced security. Yet engaging in a partial or total migration to cloud requires a solid, holistic strategy that focuses on technical and management challenges that will likely arise, and an organizational mindset that will help ensure the migration’s success. This introductory, vendor agnostic talk will highlight the technical, management and cultural considerations that every cloud migration strategy should consider, how to address some common challenges, and best practices to help guide the process.

When first discussing a multi-cloud strategy, we must start with its importance, its reasoning (why you need it) and what formats can be adopted. Only then can we dive deeper into the different ways a customer could distribute their infrastructure across multiple clouds as well as the business and technical considerations that should be kept in mind while adopting any of these models. Finally, we will touch upon why Alibaba Cloud fits well in your Multi-cloud strategy.
Whether you want to get started with Infrastructure as Code on Azure or using it already today, in this session Philip will talk about Bicep and Terraform as well as the battle between them.
Is there even a battle or is it just marketing? Do I have to decide? What is the best choice for my use case? If you have ever asked yourself one of those questions or even are just curious about one of those tools, this talk is for you.
In short: There is no battle. Both tools have different scopes. Philip will talk about the pros and cons, and what the tools themselves focus on. Join his talk to learn more!

Apache Kafka and the Data Mesh | Michael Noll, ConfluentHostedbyConfluent
Data mesh is a relatively recent term that describes a set of principles that good modern data systems uphold. A kind of “microservices” for the data-centric world. While the data mesh is not technology-specific as a pattern, the building of systems that adopt and implement data mesh principles have a relatively long history under different guises.
In this talk, we share our recommendations and picks of what every developer should know about building a streaming data mesh with Kafka. We introduce the four principles of the data mesh: domain-driven decentralization, data as a product, self-service data platform, and federated governance. We then cover topics such as the differences between working with event streams versus centralized approaches and highlight the key characteristics that make streams a great fit for implementing a mesh, such as their ability to capture both real-time and historical data. We’ll examine how to onboard data from existing systems into a mesh, modelling the communication within the mesh, how to deal with changes to your domain’s “public” data, give examples of global standards for governance, and discuss the importance of taking a product-centric view on data sources and the data sets they share.
How will my on-premises data migrate to the cloud? How can I make it transparent to my users? Afterwards, how will on-premises and cloud data interact? In this session you will learn about the AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) and the AWS Schema Migration Tool (SCT). You can use these tools to convert your commercial database and database warehouse to open-source engines or AWS-native services, such as Amazon Aurora and Redshift.

Building an Interactive Query Service in Kafka Streams With Bill Bejeck | Current 2022
Kafka Streams is a powerful stream processing library that offers stateful operations. Along with the stateful operations is a unique feature of Kafka Streams, Interactive Queries, or IQ. IQ allows you to leverage the state of the application from the outside by directly querying the state stores.
But Kafka Streams is a distributed application; often, no single instance has a state store with all the data. So Kafka Streams provides the infrastructure, so a developer doesn't need to worry about querying the correct instance.
But the implementation of communication between app instances (Remote Procedure Call or RPC) is not provided, leaving the developer to Google searches on how to get started building one. In this talk, I'll discuss and demonstrate what's needed to build an RPC mechanism between Kafka Stream instances, including:
* The background of Interactive Queries
* Using Spring Boot to expose your Interactive Query Service
* How to route queries between app instances.
* Building a view to render the results
You'll leave with the knowledge on how to get started building an Interactive Query service and a reference application to get started.

Talk was held 2016/03/03 @ Microservices Meetup Berlin
This is the third lecture about contextmapping given for the experience design master class at HITLab, Canterbury University in New Zealand. Contextmapping is an important exercise in the early design phase when the designer needs to confront his / her assumptions with the real world the users live in. It is a great preparation for user research.
Collecting requirements or understanding a large system seems such a long and demanding activity. We can do al lot better than this: unlimited modelling space and all the key stakeholder in the same room, with some special spice. :-)
Domain-Driven Design has never been so efficient. This is where DDD meets Kanban, TOC and Management 3.0.
Too often we model processes around the myth of Database Transactions, ofter forgetting what a transaction really means in the real world. This talk shows an easy and cheap approach to use together with EventStorming in order to include User Experience into process modelling
Presented at Agile Prague (15th September 2014)

Apparently, everyone knows about patterns. Except for the ones that don't. Which is basically all the people who've never come across patterns... plus most of the people who have.
Singleton is often treated as a must-know design pattern. Patterns are sometimes considered to be the basis of blueprint-driven architecture. Patterns are also seen as something you don't need to know any more because you've got frameworks, libraries and middleware by the download. Or that patterns are something you don't need to know because you're building on UML, legacy code or emergent design. There are all these misconceptions about patterns... and more.
In this talk, let's take an alternative tour of patterns, one that is based on improving the habitability of code, the expression of process and the habit of practice. Patterns are about communication, exploration, empiricism, reasoning, incremental development, sharing design and bridging rather than barricading different levels of expertise.
Introduction to Event Sourcing and Challenges such as consistency, validation and concurrent updates.
The talk has been delivered at the Microservice Meetup in Munich.
Scrivere software per il business si riduce essenzialmente a due problemi. Capire il vero problema da risolvere, e trovare soluzioni interessanti, senza trasformare la cosa in un percorso ad ostacoli.
Modularity and Domain Driven Design; a killer combination?ACA IT-Solutions
Applying domain driven design in a modular fashion has implications on how your data is structured and retrieved.
A modular domain consists out of multiple loosely coupled sub-domains, each having their own modular schema in the database. How can we migrate and evolve the database schema's separately with each new sub-domain version? And how do we match this with reporting and cross-domain use cases, where aggregation of data from multiple sub-domains is essential?
A case study concerning an OSGi-based business platform for automotive services has driven us to solve these challenges without sacrificing the hard-worked-on modularity and loose coupling.
In this presentation you will learn how we used Modular Domain Driven Design with OSGi. 'Liquibase' is elevated to become a first class citizen in OSGi by extending multiple sub-domains with automatic database migration capabilities. On the other hand, 'Elasticsearch' is integrated in OSGi to become a separate search module coordinating cross-domain use cases. This unique combination enabled us to satisfy two important customer requirements. Functionally, the software should not be limited by module boundaries to answer business questions. Non-functionally, a future-proof platform is required in which the impact of change is contained and encapsulated in loosely coupled modules.
There are some recurring themes in Domain-Driven Design applications, and distant domains show more similarities that differences, especially when you start taking into account peculiarities of specific Bounded Contexts. This is where a different type of design could happen.
DDD Domain Relationships can seem very abstract at first. Here are Radars that you can use in Event Storming sessions to present the relationships to your attendees in a digestible way
Explain Domain-Driven Design, its main concepts and tools, and the Event Storming practice to highlight the importance of a good design and empower a team to start using it progressively.
[WSO2Con EU 2017] Building Next Generation Banking Middleware at ING: The Rol...WSO2
Building banking technical stacks is not an easy task, but by definition there is a need for information integrity, performance, security, stability, availability and flexibility in order to offer the best customer experience. Today banks are offering new capabilities, both to customers and partners, and need to compete globally. In this scenario, there is a need to design non-monolith, distributed systems that use collaboration and composition instead of orchestration. This slide deck focuses on how WSO2 ESB plays a key role in this transformation thanks to its flexibility, performance, openness, stability, and low TCO.
This workshop focuses on domain driven design and how to achieve it effectively. It also focus on bridging gaps while gathering requirements from business stakeholders using event storming workshops.
Following topics will be addressed into presentation:
Motivation and goals of splitting monolith application
Criteria and markers to start splitting process. Is it necessary at all?
Optimal order of extracting microservices
How organize the whole process in closed iterative steps?
What can be done with common libraries and shared code?
Options for technology and deployment of target microservices
How organize and motivate the teams and convince management?

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
Code reviews are vital for ensuring good code quality. They serve as one of our last lines of defense against bugs and subpar code reaching production.

- The Art of Effective Code Reviews
- Streamlining the Review Process
- Elevating Reviews with Automated Tools

• Interdependent features should be scheduled so that they are
completed for the same release
11. Definition: Customer - Supplier
• 2 teams in an upstream/downstream relationship
• Upstream can succeed interdependently of the downstream team
• Downstream priorities factor into upstream planning
12. Definition: Big Ball of Mud
When you have to deal with a big, monolithic (legacy) system
• Often with large intermixed models
13. Definition: Conformist
• 2 teams in an upstream/downstream relationship
• Upstream has no motivation to provide for the downstream team’s
needs
• Downstream team doesn’t put effort in translation
14. Definition: Shared Kernel
Sharing a part of the model
• Very intimite interdependency
• Can leverage or undermine design work
• Must be kept small!
15. Definition: Separate Ways
Used to cut loose systems
• Integration is always expensive
• When there is little to zero interest/benefit in integration
16. Definition: Anticorruption Layer
• Isolating layer to limit impact of changes in an upstream system
• Requires little or no modification to the upstream system
• Translates in both directions between the 2 models
17. Definition: Open Host Service
When you want to open your system for integration
• Protocol that gives access to your system as a set of services
• Open for everyone that needs to integrate with your system
• New services can be added on request but need to serve a
“general” purpose
18. Definition: Published Language
When you want a common language for translation between 2
bounded contexts
• Often combined with Open Host Service
20. Upstream/Downstream
• Not about the direction of the data!
• Upstream will influence downstream
• Might be technical (code)
• But also: schedule, responsiveness to external requests...
21. Attention!
• Map the current situation, not the (desired) future
• If it’s a mess, show it. It’ll bring focus to the problems & risks
involved in your project.
26. Step 3
• Indicate the direction of the relation, if applicable
(Upstream/Downstream)
27. Step 4
• Put the name of the Pattern on the relationship
• Partnership
• Customer/Supplier
• Conformist
• Separate Ways
• Big Ball of Mud
• Shared Kernel
28. Step 5
• Indicate which BC’s have explicit translation or sharing
• Anti Corruption Layer
• Open Host/Published Language
