  3. What do we answer when kids ask:
  4. Current paradigm : Content is KING Its easy to see why – it is really seductive It is what’s studied and tested; piling up facts - much of which is essentially trivia
  5. There are 4 issues with the current paradigm of CONTENT
  6. 1/ Irrelevance is deadly to learning and CONTENT is deadly to learning if it is not relevant/engaging So what is someone is bored? Problem of experts choosing content..
  7. CONTENT is more abundant and changeable than ever: The problem of GLUT and FLUX -used to be that adults could predict what kids would need – no longer –
  8. 2- Information changes faster than every before -pol boundaries; scientific advances
  9. Cultural literacy – Whose culture? The western cannon is no longer enough in an increasingly connected/cosmopolitan world
  10. 3. Technology makes content available instantly
  11. Sorting information becomes more important than memorizing it.
  12. Relentless drive to “get it all in” leads down unproductive paths e.g. Science class becomes an ACCUMULATION of facts Very little time is spent trying to actually do science
  13. Does this mean throw out CONTENT? What will people think ABOUT?
  14. Of course not – CONTEXT is KEY - CONTENT is not the end in-and-of itself Requires a shift in focus/mindset What we think of as CONTENT should be the CONTEXT to learn and practice skills and habits…
  15. Our job should not be to deliver CONTENT - there are plenty of places like that Our job should be to create CONTEXTs where they learn practice and hone skills need to thrive in a complex ever-changing world
  16. CALL to action: Resist the siren call of content in favor of CONTEXT
