The demands of the 21st Century require a different approach from traditional education. In the current paradigm, CONTENT is king. Educators are often concerned with coverage of specific topics and attempts to measure the understanding of algorithms and the recall of facts. Rather than force-feeding everyone the same content, we should be creating CONTEXTS in which students have the opportunity to think, practice skills, take risks, and explore. Expect presentation, play, and discussion.

rofessor John Henderson from Boston University once
told a powerful story about the US Army to a gathering of
senior BP managers . Before he started the story, he asked
hether BP had any formal approach to capturing strategic
owledge. The chief engineer raised his hand and described a
atabase of 'project lessons learned'. John acknowledged this,
an d went on to tell this story:
'I interviewed a colonel. Now this colonel was a colonel in the
82nd airborne, one of the more elite groups in the US Army. He
got a call on Saturday morning at 8 o'clock reminding him that

a hurricane had just hit. He was told that because the current
administration had very strong ties to that particular part of
the country that they did not believe that this should be left
to the reserve group because they wanted "no screw-ups".
'So the orders to the colonel were very clear: go down
there, provide any support necessary to the people after this
hurricane and don't screw up. Clear orders. The army calls it
intent- strategic intent. The strategic intent was clear.
'This particular colonel was a very highly decorated combat
soldier- he had never done this in his life. He had never actu-
ally commanded any type of civilian-related activity. He'd
always been right on the front lines in hot action. It turns out
as part of the executive education in the army he had been
exposed to the 'Centre for Army Lessons Learned' as part of
their executive education process.
'So he got on his laptop computer he dialled into Army net,
hooked into the Centre for Army Lessons Learned and asked
the following question - he actually showed me the type:
'"What does the Army know about hurricane clean -
up?"
'Within four hours he had:
• A profile of the deployment of troops in the last three
hurricanes that occurred in North America that the army
was sent to provide support and clean-up including types
of staff, types of skills, numbers of skills.
• A pro-forma budget- both what budget was required and
what the actual budget was and where the cost overruns
were.
• The ten questions that you will be asked by CNN in the
first 30 minutes on your arrival.
• A list of every state agency and federal agency that had
to be contacted and coordinated with and the name of the
person that he had to contact, and the army liaison person
who was currently working with that group some place in
North America.
• Established a Lotus Notes advisory team of the three
commanders, who agreed to be his advisory group in th is
command structur.

Whree is wisdom
Delphi, Greece was once home to the Oracle of Apollo, which answered questions from around the classical world. However, it did not answer fundamental questions about existence that have perplexed humans since the beginning of time, like "Who am I?" and "What is my purpose?". Despite advances in information and knowledge, modern humans are no closer to finding answers and are experiencing the same problems. True wisdom requires applying knowledge through contemplation and experience rather than just accumulating more information. The Kipling-Zachman lens

TPR Storytelling the News FIRST DRAFT

Whree is wisdom
Delphi, Greece was once home to the Oracle of Apollo, which answered questions from around the classical world. However, it did not answer fundamental questions about existence that have perplexed humans since the beginning of time, like "Who am I?" and "What is my purpose?". Despite advances in information and knowledge, modern humans are no closer to finding answers and are experiencing the same problems. True wisdom requires applying knowledge through contemplation and experience rather than just accumulating more information. The document outlines four levels of thinking - data, information, knowledge, and wisdom - and argues that wisdom involves properly using knowledge in a way that considers all relationships and aligns with natural laws.
SRC interdisciplinary terrain

- What do we answer when kids ask:
- Current paradigm : Content is KING Its easy to see why – it is really seductive It is what’s studied and tested; piling up facts - much of which is essentially trivia
- There are 4 issues with the current paradigm of CONTENT
- 1/ Irrelevance is deadly to learning and CONTENT is deadly to learning if it is not relevant/engaging So what is someone is bored? Problem of experts choosing content..
- CONTENT is more abundant and changeable than ever: The problem of GLUT and FLUX -used to be that adults could predict what kids would need – no longer –
- 2- Information changes faster than every before -pol boundaries; scientific advances
- Cultural literacy – Whose culture? The western cannon is no longer enough in an increasingly connected/cosmopolitan world
- 3. Technology makes content available instantly
- Sorting information becomes more important than memorizing it.
- Relentless drive to “get it all in” leads down unproductive paths e.g. Science class becomes an ACCUMULATION of facts Very little time is spent trying to actually do science
- Does this mean throw out CONTENT? What will people think ABOUT?
- Of course not – CONTEXT is KEY - CONTENT is not the end in-and-of itself Requires a shift in focus/mindset What we think of as CONTENT should be the CONTEXT to learn and practice skills and habits…
- Our job should not be to deliver CONTENT - there are plenty of places like that Our job should be to create CONTEXTs where they learn practice and hone skills need to thrive in a complex ever-changing world
- CALL to action: Resist the siren call of content in favor of CONTEXT
