A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Â
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation âBlue Starâ is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Motivation/Introductory
Activity (5 mins.)
This part introduces thelesson
content..it is serves as a warm-up
activity to givethelearners zestfor
the incoming lessonandanidea
about what itto follow. One
principle inlearning is thatlearning
occurs when itis conducted in a
pleasurableandcomfortable
atmosphere.
The teacher will flash different TV, print, radio, and social
media personalities through a multimedia presentation.
She will tell the class that these people might be familiar
to them because they might saw them in TV, magazines,
internet, etc. They might have heard some of them in the
radio as well.

- Role-playing, dyads, dramatizing,

Activity (15 mins.)
This is an interactive strategyto
elicit learnerâs prior learning
experience.It serves as a
springboardfor newlearning. It
illustrates theprinciple that learning
starts wherethelearners are.
Carefullystructuredactivities such
as individual or group reflective
exercises,groupdiscussion, self-or
group assessment, dyadicor triadic
interactions,puzzles, simulations or
role-play, cybernetics exercise,
gallery walk and thelikemaybe
created. Clear instructions should be
considered inthis part ofthelesson.
The teacher will then let the students watch these
videos:
A.) a Ted Talk of Karylle Yuson, a famous TV personality.
B.) Karen da Vila interviewing a Leni Robredo
C.) Ann Curtis being interview by Boy Abunda
Given some guide questions, the students will choose a
partner and answer the guide questions after watching
the video clips.
Analysis (10 mins.)
Essentialquestions areincluded to
serve as a guidefor theteacherin
clarifying key understandings about
the topic at hand. Criticalpoints are
organized tostructure the
discussions allowing thelearners to
maximizeinteractions and sharing of
ideas andopinions about expected
issues. Affective questions are
includedto elicit thefeelings ofthe
learners abouttheactivity or the
topic. The last questions or points
taken should lead the learners to
understand thenew concepts or
skills that areto bepresented inthe
next part ofthe lesson.
The teacher will ask the following questions to the
students about the activity.
1.) What have you learned from the videos shown?
2.) What are the sources of information you know?
3.) Where do you get sources of information?
4.) How important are people as sources of information?
5.) What are the positive and negative effects of media
on an individual or society?
6.) How did you come up with your answers?
Abstraction (20 mins.)
This outlines the key concepts,
important skills that should be
enhanced,and theproper attitude
that shouldbe emphasized. This is
organized as a lecturette that
summarizes the learning
emphasized fromtheactivity,
analysis and new inputs in this part
ofthe lesson.
The teacher will present first the meaning of people and
media. And, for better understanding of the lesson, she
will discuss the different between people media and
people in media/ Afterwards, the teacher will also discuss
the characteristics of people in media.
âBased on the dictionary definition, we may say that
people media consists of men, women, even children
that widely influence the people by reaching them
through different means.
They are the sources of information, and are responsible
in disseminating those information.
20. People media may also be defined as the utilization of
people credible in their respective fields to talk about
their expertise and help the students learn from people
with firsthand experiences on a particular field or topic.â

media and information on an individual and society.
Media has always been powerful especially with the rise
of social media. Each individual, especially children, can
get information accessibly through social media. Thus,
one positive effect of media is the access to varied
information through social media. Media also is a great

There are also several negative effects of media. One

of information that are harmful and would trigger
psychological and mental problems especially to the
youth.

Application (5 mins.)
This part is structured toensurethe
commitmentofthelearners to do
something to apply their new
learning in their own environment.
The class will do an activity entitled, â Paint Me A
Pictureâ. They will be divided into five groups. Each group
will choose a facilitator/leader.
Each group will pick out a paper with a scenario that they
will do. Once they have received the paper, they will be
given 3 minutes to brainstorm on how to portray or act

2.) A group of students are talking in the canteen.
3.) A meeting of teachers
4.) A person is posting an information in the internet.

or a painting. The teacher will then ask the class what
they have observed or presented. This will be done until
the last group is finished.

After such activity, there will be a group assessment and
discussion on what has been shown by each group. The
class will discuss and assess each scenarios that were
