Constraints
Resources & Equipment
For my film my resources include a filming location; which would occur in
my own home and local parks considering that the shots I need are required
to be filmed in a girl’s bedroom and living spaces as well some outside
shots.
I would also need props such as any general schoolwork, e.g. books, laptop
and pens. I will only need to borrow filming equipment from school such as
canon legrias, sound recorders and lighting equipment. School can also
provide me with editing softwares such as Avid.
Personnel Requirements
Considering that my short film is a low to nothing budget, I have created a skeleton crew of my
choice, many of whom are my own classmates. This includes:
• a director of photography
• hair/makeup artist
• lighting operator
• sound recordist
• a camera assistant.
My cast will include a class mate of mine who I believe can perform really well on camera, also
my own parents to play her mum and dad. This gives me a complete family to portray my story
and its issues really well.
Legal & Ethical Considerations
Considering that my film is based upon drug abuse, the theme itself may
upset some viewers as well as the age of the user. Due to my film being
based on a school student taking drugs, some viewers may find it difficult to
watch as drugs are being taken by and impacting someone at such a young
age as well as it generally being against the law. It also may be difficult
finding a substitute for the drugs used in my film.
Legal & Ethical Considerations
Another legal consideration could be whether if my main character smokes
drugs or tobacco in the film or not, if she does then I must ensure that the
actor playing the character is at least 18 years old.
I will also request permission from any owner or person responsible of a
location I would like to film in.
Codes of Practice
Before I can start filming, I must…
• Receive permission from owners from each and every location I would like to film in.
• Ensure that each location must be a clear and safe environment for cast and crew to work on prior
to filming, as well as keeping pathways and public locations clear for passers by.
• Receive written consent from anyone who may be in the background of my film, such as when I
am filming in public locations e.g. parks.
• Ensure cast and crew treat any location we film in (house or public) with respect for the owners
and general public.
• Any children strictly cannot appear in my film unless I have permission from the parents as well as
not filming near/outside any schools or nurseries.
Copyright
I will ensure that I will be using copyright free material in order to avoid any
legal issues with material that does not belong to me and I do not have
permission for to use.
Time
The average amount of time it takes for a real media production to make a
short film is roughly around a month, with writing all the proposals,
budgets, shooting, editing and recording music. Although, my short film will
not have as much crew and will not require as much work as a real
production company would. Therefore, with the crew that I have, I will
create a production schedule that will ensure each of my crew members
meet deadlines when they are required to.
Budget
I have a low to nothing budget for my short film, therefore I am restricted
on a number of different aspects of my short film such as for equipment,
props, cast and crew. Comparing to short film productions made by
professionals with a much larger budget, my short film may be less realistic
to the audience or even a poor quality short film.
Personnel
Within my genre, which is social realism, the average cast are unknown
actors. This would help emphasise the general theme of the film making it
seem more realistic to the audience. However, the production crew may be
larger and more well equipped with higher quality equipment than I will be
as larger production companies have a budget large enough to hire the
required equipment. Therefore, instead of hiring equipment and real actors
myself, I will need to compromise by borrowing equipment from the school
and finding inexperienced actors who are willing to work for free.
