The English Civil War broke out in 1642 when Charles I tried to arrest several Puritans in Parliament. The war was fought between the Royalist Cavaliers who supported the king and the Roundheads who opposed him, led by Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell's New Model Army defeated the Cavaliers in 1649, leading Charles I to be beheaded, marking the start of the Interregnum period without a monarch. During this time from 1649-1660, Cromwell ruled first as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth republic and then the Protectorate dictatorship.
