The Glorious Revolution key figures included James II and VII, who became King of England, Scotland, and Ireland in 1685 after his brother Charles II passed away. However, James wanted to establish an absolute monarchy and favored Catholicism, which opposed the wishes of Parliament. In 1688, a group of Protestant nobles invited William of Orange to invade England with an army. James fled to France in exile, while William and James' daughter Mary became the new joint monarchs, establishing a constitutional monarchy with limits on royal power. Mary died of smallpox in 1694, leaving William III to rule alone until his death in 1702.
