This document summarizes the key characteristics of true solutions, colloids, and suspensions. A true solution fully dissolves particles smaller than 1 nm that do not settle out and do not scatter light. A colloid partially dissolves 1 nm to 100 nm particles that do not settle but can scatter light in a phenomenon called the Tyndall effect. A suspension does not dissolve larger than 100 nm particles that do settle out and can reflect light.
