Bronzeville is a neighborhood in Chicago that is 1.67 square miles with a population of 119,284, of which 85.5% are Black. The neighborhood developed during the Great Migration period from 1890-1950 as many Black Americans moved north for equal opportunity, education, and industrial jobs. They settled in the south side of Chicago, creating a "Black metropolis." However, after World War II, one-third of residents left due to economic failure. The neighborhood contains the site of the former Ida B. Wells public housing project and the Victory Monument.
