“The Igbo culture
in Things Fall
Apart”

⚡Introduction of Things Fall Apart
● Things Fall Apart is the debut novel by Nigerian author Chinua
Achebe, first published in 1958.
● It is seen as the archetypal modern African novel in English.
● The novel follows the life of Okonkwo, an Igbo man and local
wrestling champion.
● The work is split into three parts, 1. His family, personal history,
and the customs and society of the Igbo, and the second and
third sections introducing the influence of European colonialism
and Christian missionaries on Okonkwo, his family, and the
wider Igbo community.
About Chinua Achebe :
● He was a Nigerian novelist, poet,
and critic.
● His first novel Things Fall Apart
often considered his masterpiece,
is the most widely read book in
modern African literature.
● He's is father of the modern African
literature.
What is Igbo Culture. :
“Igbo culture are the customs,
practices and traditions of the
Igbo people of southeastern
Nigeria. These customs and
traditions include the Igbo
people's visual art, music and
dance forms, as well as their
attire, cuisine and language
dialects.”
The Igbo Culture in Things Fall Apart
● According to Ernest N. Emenyonu, Things Fall Apart is a
classic study of cross-cultural misunderstanding and
the consequences to the rest of humanity.
● It is a patriarchal society. Decision making involves man
only.
● Lack of centralised political structure, no single leader,
elder lead typically, oldest male member of family.
● Live in autonomous village and town ruled by elders in
tribal council.
Igbo religion
● The Igbo believe in the
Supreme Being, who is the
controller of the world and all
that are in the world. -
Chukwuka.
● The Igbo society believes in
character and has very strong
belief in life after death.
● Igbo believe in the cult of the
ancestors.
Igbo society marriage custom
● Marriages were
discussed in depth as
they brought families
and entire Villages
together.
● Igbo women
● Bride price
Igbo Farming
● The cultivation of yam is
specifically the work of Igbo
men.
● Yam as a foodstuff from God .
● In Things Fall Apart, yam is
the symbol of success and
the virility of men like
Okonkwo.
Conclusion :
Achebe re-creates Igbo culture and tradition in the
mind of the reader. How Igbo culture is handing
from generation to generation. African culture and
Igbo culture is far different fom our culture. The Igbo
pre-colonial society of Achebe’s Things Fall Apart is
a well-structured and organized one in this
traditional Igbo community.
