History
â—Ź The land was settled by Ukrainians after the first wave of Ukrainian
immigrants to the US between 1870 and 1914 because of their familiarity
with Poles whole lived and continue to live in Polish Downtown, a nearby
neighborhood.
â—Ź The area became heavily populated after a train station was established
along Paulina ave in 1895. It was decommissioned in the 1964.
â—Ź Over the past half century it has remained a middle class neighborhood,
mainly inhabited by older Eastern European people and their families.
â—Ź It remains the center of the Chicagoland Ukrainian community and
political efforts to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine because of strong
ethnic nationalism and religiosity amongst Ukrainian-Americans.
